I've had this 5 times today too, the last time the automated message included my name.  I ended up calling egg (got the number from the internet) and they confirmed that it was actually them.  I'd had 3 transactions on my card this morning which they believed were suspicious - 2 were legit, the other had been cancelled - still not sure what it was for.
Anyway, I ended up complaining about the message and they told me that a human would call me in the future.

They call to check spending on your account....in case it's being used without your knowledge.  If yer don't want to call back, you can send them a secure message on their website and ask them to contact you that way.

Literally just had the same today and can confirm it is legitimately Egg Card doing routine checks for possible dodgy transactions.  Apparently their engineers are aware of the problem where you press the button and it just cuts you off.  I agree not the best system ever but nice to know they are on the case checking out these things.

It's actually a very good security measure, much better than any of the other card providers I've used.

Egg get a big thumbs up from me.

This system is a bit of a joke actually, and highly annoying.  I don't mind them doing routine checks, however, I have to endure this every month when I pay for my monthly train ticket.  I wouldn't mind if it had the logic to tell the difference between business as usual on my card, and transaction types that Egg deems suspect, but it doesn't.

If you have an Egg card, treat this as a great service. Put the number in your mobile phone and give it a name such as EGGSECURITY and then call them back. It may save you a lot of problems.

Perfectly legit call from Egg Credit Card to confirm recent transactions.

There is something broken about the way it works though, in that if you have a mobile registered with them, and that's the number they call on, it doesn't seem to respect any chosen key presses and cuts you off. If you don't answer the call--and you have a land-line registered with Egg--it'll drop through to that instead, where it does work fine.

Was cautious the first time it happened to me, but it's all above-board.

Yes as others have said it is Egg, a message was left on our answerphone last week, and I called them back to find the card had been used fraudulently for £600 so a thumbs up from me too for this service.

I have received these calls from Egg and have just emailed them to tell them what a disgusting discourtesy it is to auto-dial their customers.  If it's urgent then it should be a human being on the other end of the phone.  Also, how easy would it be to copy that message and get people's personal info eg dates of birth?  Clearly there are enough people out there who are naive enough to give such information to a machine which randomly calls them up.
