Recorded message saying you've been randomly selected to win a holiday in florida, press 9 for more information or something along those lines.

Area code from Stratford-upon-Avon, but number obviously too long

This number called our business line and I let it ring, no message on answerhone.  They always call on the hour usually around mid day so I let it ring.

NTL/Virgin software doesnot stop overseas calls. I am not sure about BT but it is probably the same.
Telephone/fax/mail preference service is not effective because idle arsed posties still deliver unspecified mail instead of dumping it.
Plus  telephone dialling machines will dial numbers from 1111111111 to 9999999 et cetera. So, if you are unlisted, ex-directory or acr'd they will still get through.

These sort of calls put my mother-in-law in a nursing home, drove her mad. Really ! I took it as far as possible with BT, they can't do anything to bar these calls from abroad. At the time they wanted you to press number 9 on your keypad to claim the prize - it somehow put £15 on your bill.
Now my mother has had this 01789 0000000 number. How are they faking this number ?

They must have rung me about 4 times by now, usually in the mornings and I have to answer the phone as it may be my agency calling.  I would love to stay on the line and find out who they are but I am worried they are going to charge me an absolute fortune if I do "press 9". Anybody pressed 9 and regretted it? I am signed up to the TPS and this has been the only number to get through, grrr!

No. Urban myth. Impossible in the UK.

Anyway I had a call today from them at 14:55. No message was left.
