Its almost impossible to believe how paranoid people are. "Maybe something to do with lost Child Benefit discs?", "a definate scam" etc are ridiculous. How do they have your details?: you gave them to the Halifax and, intentionally or otherwise, gave them, and selected third parties, permission to contact you. Why do they ask to confirm only the YEAR of birth?: because Data Protection rulings state that with calls of this nature, the caller must ensure he/she is speaking to the correct person, for their protection. I could find out the YEAR of birth of any celebrity, politician etc, and in fact the whole date just by Googling their name. Does this occur to anyone? Why do they not leave a message?: again, for D.P reasons, as, clearly, the caller cannot control who listens to the message and this would therefore breach D.P. Why is it not illegal?: because, as aforementioned, you gave permission. Why do they get through to ex-directory/ TPS protected numbers?: because you gave the bank the contact number to call you on and the TPS does not block calls from, or on behalf of financial institutes. Anything else?
From reading these pages, and receiving the call myself, if you actually use reason and rationale, instead of employing what is actually a very sad plan of looking forward to giving someone abuse on the phone, you can discover these things. Go into the branch and talk to someone in authority, not the moron cashiers, and give them all the information you have. I received a call from someone called Alex, who on hearing I wouldnt give details over the phone in any situation, said he understood fully and talked me through what the situation was. He said he was calling from FirstAssist ON BEHALF of the Halifax, and said that many dont listen and assume you said "FROM the Halifax", told me who they were, what they did, exactly where he was calling from, his full name etc and actualy encouraged me to write everything down and go to my local branch just to set my mind at rest. I did this and was told that FirstAssist is and insurance administrator who has been chosen by the HBOS group to provide this service. The office he said he was calling from was correct, and he was indeed one of their employees. Thats how easy it is, he was a polite, eloquent young man just trying to do a job. If you are rational and ask what you would like to know, you will find out, as I did. I no longer receive calls from the number and know for sure it is legitimate. Of course it can be inconvenient and annoying, but illegal, shady or a con it is not. Why can nobody accept this? pathetic.
