I received a phone call from from a South Asian accented individual claiming to represent my broadband provider, offering a remote access Pc scan "free of charge".
He suggested accessing a site called www.teamworker.com to install a
remote access client, when I asked about who he worked for he
connected me to another South Asian accented individual claiming to be
"Christopher Bell" who repeated the instructions.
    I hung up without scanning.

According to google  0208-8193986 belongs to (vakconnectuklimited.com)
whose site "Pc Web Work is the unit of VAK Connect UK LIMITED"

Like a muppet .... after recieving the same call and not being 'scammer wise' I let these people take control of my pc ..Duh!!  I told them that I was worried and how did I know they were who they were telling me (as in my provider) and they relayed personal info back to me making me believe that they were who they were. As a result .... I listened and followed instructions allowing them access, but had a gut feeling all was not well.  They said they had run a scan, look at the box Mrs so and so and you can see that you have over one thousand viruses that got there bla bla bla ...
They told me they were going to fix the problems free of charge, then started asking me how I wanted to pay the £96.00 they wanted.
Even got an ear full from one of the chaps who thought it was disgusting that I pay for security with my provider and get nothing from it blardy bla bla. He was really rude and shouted!!
He only gave up when I had a go back and told them I didnt like it that they had made themselves out to be from my provider, I told them they should have told me about the money side of it as I would have quickly let them know that I didnt have that sort of money. He still didn't give up but told me I could pay in two installments and then how would I pay?/ I told him I couldnt pay on line etc and so he basically cut me off saying he couldnt help me then and sorry to have wasted my time!!  Now I am worrying in case there is something on my pc that they have left! Can they get in again?? Have they left any little presents that I don't want?
I feel like a real numpty but I really thought that they were who they said they were!! The laugh of it is .. they told me they needed to check my pc as my provider was having huge problems with hackers!! RIGHT!!!

These people appear to know your name and which provider and system you are running . I have previously had several calls from this type of person,  they say they have access to my computer details from my provider.  There must be millions of people using Microsoft and Windows, so it's a fair bet that the details they give you will be correct for you.  It is quite frightening to hear for the first time that you are broadcasting error messages, messing up the world wide web and that your computer is therefore full of viruses!!

So before you do anything check with, say Microsoft, and see that their website tells you that they do not and never will phone you.

Do not do anything they ask of you.  Get the name of the person calling and their telephone number, then check who they are first.

I have had several calls from an Asian sounding male who gave me the above number and said his name was Rodney Fenwick from pcwebwork.com
He said that within 24 hours my computer was going to stop working and that Microsoft had asked him to contact me to sort it out.  He said the reason my computer was not working well was due to it being full of viruses.  This person has phoned on several occasions and I had managed to put him off before.
As I became more anxious, he became more irritated with me so I let him have remote access to my computer and then began to panic as I watched.  He then went on to say that it was going to cost £96 and when I said that I did not want to pay and that I already had an insurance, he said that it would not cover software problems.  I switched my computer off and he became angry at which point my husband took the phone and told him to go away.

    not so stupid
I have been inundated over the last few weeks with phone calls from this number.  The speel is they are representing Microsoft and want to rectify problems with my computer.  Even when you tell them you are not having problems they don't give up.  Usually we just put the phone down but decided today to request further information i.e. phone number, company name etc.  Having acquired this I rang Trading Standards and gave them the information in the hope that something can be done to stop these con artists.  They are very persistent and obviously from reading other peoples comments people are falling for this scam.  Hopefully someone will put a stop to it.

Had a call today from 'Rodney Fenwick' of Microsoft who tried to get my IP address by using some mumbo-jumbo spiel about my PC being infected with a virus which would stop it working.  The smell of bullsh*t came wafting strongly down the scratchy line from India and I asked him for his credentials and to tell me exactly what the problem was and how it would be fixed. He then mentioned PC Web Work and gave me the number 02088193986 and an address 3 Midhurst Close, Crawley, W. Sussex. I refused his suggestion that I switch on my PC and give him the IP address and told him that I would check with Microsoft directly for any virus problems. As expected, a quick check on the web revealed lots of references to this scam. If he calls again, I shall be rather less polite :-))

Got a phone call from Rodney (as above) from pc webwork.com on behalf of Microsoft. He told me that our pc was running slow due to viruses and he was keen to give his name and number and sounded very convincing. Fortunately my husband works in IT so I was able to defer the call to him and asked Rodney to call back later to speak to him. My husband seemed to know immediately it was a scam and wanted to know how they had our details. But they could just be using a database and chancing that everyone they call has a computer. Can't believe there are so many scammers out there!

I just got a call from some guy claiming His name was John and he was from microsoft. He said my computer was slow blah blah. Had me open the run box type in some nonsense the try run it. He then had me try and use IE explorer and type in pcwebwork and wanted me to click on some link.
This guy is learning as he goes. Number was withheld, and He told me when it would not cost me anything and If i did not want this just put the phone done so i did.  I was not about to give remote control of my pc to any one. Yeah its slow and does not respond but I have already diagnosed the the problem and there is nothing any one can do unless they can reverse the magnetic integrity of my Hardrive as it slowly loses it.

Do not give control to anyone who rings u up.

Just received phone call from Microsoft Technical Dept. Indian sounding male gave name of John Smith when challenged as to his identity etc.  He said was calling because of virus and loss of some 60% of microsoft application.  Told him after some discussion not so politely that I had no intention of giving him any information whatsoever as I had no idea who the hell he was and where he was phoning from.  He gave the telephone number 02088193986 and said this was customer service at Microsoft Centre in London for me to check out and ring him back! I dont think so!Having worked for 22 years for a blue chip company in their Fraud Control Business Section this chap was on a looser!

Well I have to give them credit this is an excellent scam that really got my goat up!
I genuinely believed they were acting on behalf of microsoft as I had just sent a report through. I let them access my computer but did not part with any money as I'd caught on by then. Scary stuff!!

I can hardly believe it but I was stupid enough to fall for this scam 12 mths ago to the point of actually paying £96 and allowing one of the'operatives' remote access to my laptop!.For the last few months I have had numerous calls offering 'the 12mth health check' via ,of course remote access'!!
Having ,belatedly done some research I will of course respond to the next call 'appropriatly!!!'
Having allowed remote access in Aug 2010 should I now be VERY WORRIED as too what data/info. these scammers can access?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Our call from Microsoft engineers, -ahem, pcwebwork.com, was from a man with an Asian voice who called himself  'Romeo' .......   We thought to check him out but when we couldn't find out where he came from, that is to say 'wherefore art thou Romeo' we bailed out!  My wife told him that Microsoft had never cared enough to call anyone with support before and so it must be a scam.

This scam was highlighted on "You've been Scammed", BBC1, 21st November.  These people will install spyware/malware on the computer if given remote access.  Any money they ask for to "fix" the nonexistent faults seems to be a diversion to hide what they are really doing.  The Director of Security for Microsoft stated, on the same programme, that neither Microsoft, nor its partners, would ever cold call you.  It would be be a breach of their privacy rules.

I have had these scammers onto me.  VAK Connect UK Ltd, of 668, Sydney Road, Watford,  Phone 0208-819-3986.  They use the term PC Web Work.  If you go on Google Earth you will find this address is a private house.   The fraud squad should raid this place and close it down.

Hey - same thing happened to me but unfortunately I wasn't as smart as you, and was on the line for ages to 'Mike Gibson' - a most unlikely name for the very strong Asian accent which went with it.
When we got to the questions about card details, something went clunk in my aged brain, and I hung up.
You guessed - since then my PC is not coping - probably being eaten up by virus as I write!  I was given same phone number, told to put in 'iexplore' and www.pcwebwork.com, and said gentleman was from Microsoft Technical Dept. OA52.
Well, hopefully my old age pension is intect, but any suggestions about my PC.?
