This morning, Saturday 01 October 2011, two people claiming to be from Microsoftv and ET Protection with strange accents phoned saying that you must log on to your computer and follow the steps they provide. Claiming that your computer is affected with viruses. After googling the number they provided I realised this was a scam. Please be aware and phone your internet service provider. PLEASE DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE TRICK YOU INTO GIVING THEM ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION!!!!!

30 Nov, I got the same call from these strange two foreign individuals from ET Protection claiming to be representative of Microsoft checking on All Windows and Vistas 7 etc for  Viruses that have been reported to them. They asked to access my computer to scan for these viruses. They then tried to sell a security package for R3200 all tolled for 14years or R1200 per year TELLING YOU THAT YOUR COMPUTER IS IN DANGER OF CRASHING IF  YOU DONT DO IT IMMEDIATELY.   This is obviously a BIG SCAM SO PLEASE BE WARNED.

This scam has been shown in the UK on BBC1 programme "You've been Scammed".  These people will install spyware/malware on the computer if given remote access.  Any money they ask for to "fix" nonexistent faults seems to be a diversion to hide what they are really doing.  The Director of Security for Microsoft said, on the same programme, that neither Microsoft, nor its partners, will ever 'phone you.  It would be a breach of their privacy rules.  In the UK these scammers seem to have dozens of fake numbers and change them every time we get wise to them.

I got the same call today from "ET Protection" claiming the same story. I knew it was a scam immediately so I played along as this lady with an Indian accent (not Durban Indian) directed me to my windows log errors. When I questioned her about her company address she gave me an address in Cape Town which may be legit but when I gave her the impression that it was invalid she hung up. I wasted about 10 minutes of her time but it was fun playing along.

This scam is running at the moment from another Cape Town Number, 021-300-2322. Got a 2nd call today (3 Feb 2012)

They are now calling themselves 24/7 PC Support. When I challenged them they refused to identify themselves, the location of their company or the name of the owner of the company.

Happened to me this morning 6 Feb'2012.  Peter phoned but said he was from EC Protection working the Microsoft and that my computer sends out messages over the internet.  They picked it up and phoned me.  I asked where he got my number from and said it was my service provider.  He kept going on that my computer is going to crash at any moment and that only he can help me.  Obviously living in SA, I've read about alot of scams, so I called him on it and he said he was only trying to help and no one else can assist me.  I told him, if the computer crashes, I've got back-ups and that I'll speak to my husband and IT before allowing anyone access to my computer.  He was extremely rude and kept on pushing me to give him remote access.  I then said as soos as I confirm this with my IT, I'll phone him, but he didn't want to give me the number, he first wants to access my computer, then give me the number.  I told him that I think he is trying to scam me, but then he gave  me this number 0213007901 which I then googled and got these posts.

Beware, this Peter guy wasn't at all happy with my suspions and not wanting to do what he wanted!
