- JACGot a phone call this morning form a asian man telling me my computer was under threat said he was from windows 7 and would I turn on my computer, couldn' tunderstand him at first but asked for his number to ring back kept saying I needed to turn on my computer , so put phone down then checked last number which was 02538020308.
Persume scan - ChrisI was called again today, (2 days following). same Asian guy on a very poor line, telling me there is a problem with my pc and an infected file. First time saying they were affiliated to MS next time telling me MS are much too busy to call individual customers but they were working for Windows!!!
I told him I doubted his credibility he offered to twell me the ID of my computer to authenticate his genuine call???
I played ball for a short while to see where he was going, he then asked me to press the windows key and the "R" key, (which opens the box for you to type in a program run) he then asked me to type "run" in the box.
At this point I stopped, told him that would start a program, not show me my PC I.D.! He then tried to backtrack and say oh ok lets go back and tell you your I.D., at that point I knew he was only after getting into my pc from external source, told him I was calling police and hung up!- Caller: unknown
- Bill replies to SimonI have had the same experience a couple of times - they won't listen! I taught IT for years and would know if one of my computers had a problem! They also tried the same thing with my late father-in-law who, at over 90, wouldn't have known a computer if it jumped up and bit him! My daughter took the calls and couldn't convince them that there was no internet connection in the house.
- Bill replies to MaryI have had calls from the same "British Saver Survey" but the number is showing up as 018000488968
- gert smithyou called me 3 times on monday 3rd sept 2012
WHY .............. - ltimmsieThese low lifes have scammed my elderly grandmother out of £205. They cold called her in May with the usual story of viruses on her computer. She unfortunately believed them and did not realise until a few weeks ago when she saw something similar being discussed on the tv that she had fallen for this scam. She was then too ashamed to tell anyone about it.
As soon as she told me I advised her to contact her credit card company to cancel the card and to make them aware of the crime. We have to fill in a form to hopefully retrieve the money. I also contacted Action Fraud (www.actionfraud.police.uk) to report the incident. I was advised that the local police would be in touch.
My husband works in IT and has done a full security scan of her laptop and checked the windows firewall security settings and whether there are users that are allowed remote access. He checked programs that start on start up to make sure that no programs like keyloggers had been installed. Or you can use system restore to a point before your computer was accessed.
She has been phoned by these criminals regularly asking her to put her computer on which she has refused to do. They have even called her at midnight which was very frightening for her. She told them that she would contact the police and they laughed.
The Police and local councils have a duty to advise people, particularly the vulnerable and elderly, of these scams so that they do not fall victim to these despicable individuals - BeeThis company is called Comantra and they are based in India. - CarolineI am not sure if it was this number but it was an Asian guy again and claiming to be from the British Saver Survey, he was quite grumpy that I wanted to ask him questions and kept talking even though I was. He said he could introduce us to a way to reduce our outgoings. I explained that we were signed up to the Telephone Preference Service and asked if he should be calling my number, at which point he hung up.
- Caller: British Saver Survey
- ancellJust got a call this morning from a foreign gent pretending to be a microsoft windows specialist so this number goes on and on.
Advised him to get a proper job-----anyway thats the polite version of my advice. - LisaJust had a call from this number. The caller was an Asian man who was very hard to understand. He stated that i was having problems with my pc using microsoft windows. He would be able to fix my pc for a small fee. I have just updated my sons pc - but the fact there was so much background noise and the fact that he was very difficult to understand sent alarm bells ringing. I informed him that if there was anything wrong with my pc i would sort it and that he was very difficult to understand and i knew that this call was a scam. I then terminated the call.
- Caller: Microsoft windows?

- maggie replies to MaryLike Mary below, I just had an unintelligible phone call (September 25th 2012) from 'British Saver Survey,' with a similiar dodgy Asian man named 'Alan.' First time he called he didn't care he was singing and speaking into my answer machine in Indian, obviously from a call centre/organisation from the noise in the background...I didn't answer. The second time, with the number listed as 'out of area,' I picked up the phone and I eventually realised he was asking for me by first name. I said I couldn't understand a word he was saying and he attempted to speak more clearly then, saying his name was Alan (really? please!!), would I answer some questions. I said I wasn't interested and was he the person who called previously, hanging on and singing into my answer machine? As I attempted to explain I don't appreciate having my day interrupted as such, so unprofessionally, he hung up on me. OBVIOUSLY ANOTHER SCAM.
- DaveGot a call from that number this morning. An asian man calling himself John claimed to be from the Windows Technical department and asked whether I had a computer. When I tried to get him to repeat who he was and who he worked for he just said "are you deaf" and hung up.
Now I've had a number of these shysters before, not necessarily from that number, who claim to have had reports of viruses and so on. Because I'm knowledgeable about IT I have to admit that on occasion I've strung them along simply so they waste their time with me rather than trying to fleece someone that might be more vulnerable. I've noticed that these characters are becoming ever more abusive and rude so they probably have started to realise that they're getting rumbled.
Trouble is they're becoming a tiresome nuisance now and it really is about time that the source of these calls were located so that they can be blown to smithereens (or something). [Note to any snoopers - I didn't really mean that last bit but it would be nice if something could be done about these obvious attempts at fraud and theft].
