Is it REALLY Microsoft?  I called the number and didn't get through - no 'this is Microsoft please wait your call is important to us' etc.

My mum in law got a call from these jokers yesterday, they got her to type stuff in to the cmd prompt, told her that her computer had lots of corrupted files and tried to get her to sign up for some kind of subscription for $$$.

She can't remember what she typed in ( poor dear, it's all 'code' ), but they gave her a 'password'.  I'm worried that she might have downloaded something or set up remote access to allow these guys access into her pc. (Yes I'm paranoid, yes I'm in I.T.)

Anyone else had this experience?  Did you have to type stuff in / run any programs?

Yes, i know someone who has had this call. They seem to know how to find your phone number, but don't actually know who you are. I would suggest that they are setting up remote access to your computer and just waiting until you buy something online or do internet banking. BEWARE.
Ask them who they are, where they are from, address, website , ABN and i bet they never call again

I got a call from " Windows Tech Dept" today they said that I had a very serious problem with my computer and that they need to fix it. I tried to ask the lady (indian) more questions but as I could not understand her properly nor her me she put me through to a man also indian that wanted me to let him access my computer. I asked him what the problem was and he said that my computer had downloaded corrupt files and that he had to look into it futher to fix the problem otherwise my computer would run really slow and then crash. I said that I would contact bigpond and ask them what the problem is and asked him for there phone number which he gave me (02) 80050590. I called them back and they answered the phone (after a long time) as "Windows Service Centre" I just hung up. Just wondering if anyone else has had the samething. Funny thing is that when I tried to open internet explorer it kept closing down today. Coincidence or what????

I've just got a phone call from them as well, telling them to type prefetch into my run command window. When I googled what this does it said it was very bad. I asked the guy on the phone (Tom, but he's Indian.... who's ever met an Indian called Tom???) how I know I could trust he was calling from the Windows / Microsoft technical department and he said, he'll take me to the official Windows website in just a moment.

I didn't trust the caller so just said I didn't want to proceed and he hung up.

I'm afraid these clowns are still up to their shenanigans- I got a call from them today and it IS a SCAM (http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/ConsumerProtect ... osoft_scam.html).

I guess it's easy for them to sound convincing as Indian call centres are used by so many companies these days... I could hear several other 'sales' conversations going on in the background during my call so can only imagine how many people are being targeted in a day!  They offered a few clues that it was a set up though, like the way they said they were from 'Windows' instead of 'Microsoft' as you would expect.  They also seemed to be reading from a proforma statement which was stumbled through quite badly.

Tamlin, the guy asked me to type 'inf risk' in the RUN box which brought up a list of what looked like system files that he insisted were dangerous corrupted files that he urged me not to click on, as then they would infest my PC with bad stuff.

They wanted me to give them remote access to my PC to 'fix' the file problem but I said I had to go and what number was best to contact them back on when I returned- that number was (02) 80050590.

    Be safe people..!!

I also received this call on the 25th. Same deal, they were from window's tech and i had corrupted files. After asking many questions and being put onto the "Supervisor" and asked to turn on my computer so they could show me it was corrupted I was sus and said i was busy and could i ring back. Same number was given.

Really, why would windows ring and offer to fix my computer for me?

I've just had exactly the same experience as everyone else on this thread.  When I asked the caller (also obviously from India) why on earth I would want to type something into my computer on the basis of a call from a complete stranger, he gave me this phone number and said he'd call back.  The first thing I did was to Google the number and find this warning.  A few minutes later, he called back and I told him exactly what I'd discovered.  They must be getting cheekier as rather than just putting the phone down, he tried to argue that he was providing a legitimate service.

What annoys me most of all is that a couple of months ago I signed up to a telephone preference service scheme to stop nuisance calls.  They'd more-or-less stopped, and I'm wondering how this one slipped through.

I am on the Gold Coast & got a call today with same story. I told them a phone call from a stranger was not going to get me to hand over any details at all so they were wasting their time & they handed me over to their Supervisor & I asked for their number & got same one above - they tried to tell me they were based in Victoria Ave Chatswood but I told them the numbers don;t start with 800.
The thing is they rang a silent number that is not known to anyone except for the fact that an hour beforehand I bought something online from Ebay via Oz-Auctions & added the phone number in online to make for an easy delivery so that is where they got it from! I paid via Paypal too?
Every single time I buy something online I get scam emails but this was the first phone call I received so it is coming from that Ebay purchasing link - fix it Ebay!

got a call from  windows technical support a couple of hours ago they asked me to type inf in to my run box and shown me all the errors on my computer they then said we will put you through to our technical advisor. i said could they ring me back in half an hour as my baby was having a bit of a tantrum,  during this time  they had cut off my internet connection to my modem . and i was getting really annoyed and worried. just over an hour later they rang me back and asked me to go to this ammy site  By typing the address in to my run box as the site came up the phone cut out and they never rang back that was about 15 minutes ago . i never downloaded anything but i am still worried because they were able to cut my internet off. as i type i am running a full virus scan.

I am getting one or two calls PER WEEK...As soon as I hear a delay before getting a connection or as soon as I hear an Indian voice I just hang up.  Problem that worries me is that they ask for us by name. Where can I go to have their calls blocked

I too got a call from a indian call centre, a man named Mark said my computer has many dangerous files that are corrupt and will eventually slow down my computer to a stop.
They went through the command promt exercise, by asking my to put in "inf risk" and showing me all the many files, as well as showing me in "Computer" where all these files are sitting and being downloaded because my firewall is not working properly.
I knew this had to be wrong as my computer is on a network and has it's own firewall that is serviced by a IT department. They gave me a number to call back 02 8005 0590 and said that only Microsoft technicians have access to clear these files and it will cost $90 for a subscription for the rest of the computers life to fix these issues.
How are they getting these numbers?? I think I will notify Microsoft...

We have had several calls from these jokers as late as 9pm...claiming they are from Windows 7 Technical Support!! They say our computer has apparently picked up some virus and something about a firewall. Really??? Computer seems ok to me!! I told them my husband wasn't home so give me name and number and we'll call backI. The Indian sounding girl said her name was Jennifer and after confusing her phone number she settled on this one. Thought that was the end of them until a guy rang about 9pm. Husband now home and he says "why do you people keep calling us" (in frustrated voice), and the other end hung up!!!! Wish these fools would stop calling us! It seems there have been dozens of similar calls in our small town.
