My wife received a call from techmate 24/7 (on behalf of Microsoft) claiming she had a virus on her laptop.  They called back again an hour later (different person) saying they were the manager and urgently needed access to her machine.

Definitely a scam...

Sorry "Jack", it is a waste of time putting fake positive posts in badly phrased English on here.  This scam was exposed on BBC tv last November.  These people try to get remote accesss to your computer and if they get it they will install spyware/malware.  The Director of Security for Microsoft said, on the programme, that neither Microsoft, nor its partners, would ever 'phone you.  It would be a breach of their privacy rules.  Remember, folks, no=one who 'phones you like this knows anytthing about your computer, they rely on scare tactics and lack of computer knowledge.  The things they tell you are all lies.  You would not give your personal info to a stranger in the street, so do not let a stranger on the 'hone have access to your computer.  Goodbye "Jack" your lies won't work.

Maybe you can try to answer an obvious question that scammers like you find so difficult? Why did you enter a phone number into a website called "whocallsme.com" if you already knew who the number belongs to??

Oh, and sorry to make you look any more stupid, but maybe you could tell us how these "wonderful" companies/tech-heads can get people's private phone numbers from supposed "error" messages sent from millions of computers when they can't even see an IP address!??

Another obvious scam using a currently familiar theme, complete with equally familiar fake posts from satisfied customers using "call centre" English!

I just had a call from 'Andersen' saying he was calling on behalf of Microsoft because my PC had reported a fault  -  that it had been invaded by a virus called csrss.exe and that he could help me eliminate the virus. I expressed doubt about his authenticity.  He directed me to look at my Windows Task Manager page and, sure enough, there was the programme csrss.exe . He then directed me to Google the name of that programme and there I found many references offering ways of removing the virus.  I was still doubtfull so he directed me to a site called Techmate 24.7 .  This page claimed that it was a Microsoft partner company and that they could eliminate the virus.  I was still suspicious so I asked Andersen for a phone number that I could ring back after I had made some checks.  He gave me a number, 0203 286 8331  which he said was in Hounslow, London.  I then called my ISP Helpline, BT Broadband, and reported these events.  I was told very clearly that this was a false organisation who would break into my PC in order to steal bank details and empty my accounts. They said that Microsoft would never ask a 'partner company' to call me.  I called back the 0203 number and got an answerphone message saying that it was 'MS Support Services'.  My ISP, BT Broadband, runs McAfee firewalls, anti-virus protection etc, so I was reasonably confident that I could not have become infected, and I have certainly not noticed that my PC had been slowed down by the virus, as the caller claimed it had been.  My advice would be, for anyone who gets a similar call, talk to your ISP help desk.

That would be "James Anderson" who has called me previously.  Funny but I have just been watching him on TV with the England Cricket Team in the UAE.  He really gets about, doesn't he. The telephone number is fake, via Skype or VOIP and the call would be from India. This scam has been going on for ages and was on "You've Been Scammed", BBC1, last November. They want remote access to your coputer and will install spyware/malware to steal your info. As you ISP told you, neither Microsoft or its partners would ever 'phone you.  It would be a breach of their privacy rules.  No-one who 'phones has any knowledge of your computer. They rely on scare tactics and lack of computer knowledge.

I was supide enough to give these people my credit card number.  I called & cancelled my card before anything could me put on it.  I thought I was smarter than that.

If you gave them remote access to your computer, it would be wise to get it checked out locally as they could have installed spyware/malware to steal your info.

It is sad that you have to resort to abuse, even if it is complete gibberish.  A check on the Microsoft website will show the warning that neither Microsoft, nor its partners would ever 'phone.  It is a breach of their privacy rules. Your choice of places where people have been helped is a joke, you cannot even spell them. Your post just shows how much of a scam this company is. Thanks

Avoid these calls like a plague! It is a SCAM targeted at people with limited knowledge on internet security/computers. Please avoid and report if possible. Do NOT provide any details. Microsoft will never call you for access to your computer thru a 3rd party vendor.

Thank you for updates above i have Just had a Jason on the phone telling me I had a Trojan on my computer and that i shold delete file csrss.exe and he would talk me through it. i told him my laptop was at work and I was only home for lunch so I took his number which was the same as one above 02202868331 and ext 8005. after reading the comments above I am glad I did not delete this file as it is a scam to gain access to your computer.

As I have in the past with legitimate support techs, I gave the man control of my computer. He did several things that made me suspicious and that I don't want to mention here since I assume his type troll through this kind of message board to learn how to refine their tactics.

He also identified csrss.exe on my computer, but fortunately I was just realizing he was a criminal. Unfortunately, I had no idea how much he had already stolen and installed. Spent the next several hours calling banks and changing User IDs and passwords.

If anybody knows this company to be legitimate, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll continue to think they are scammers and that I barely averted disaster.

I too had a call from that very famous company and they told me that my computer is infected with a trojan file
I was amazed that how do they come to know that,however they gave me assurance that they are not any xyz company and can certainly  help me to sort the mess out. I gave them the access of my computer and Jesus my  computer was working fine.

Oh Jack. You don't learn do you? The more you come on these sites with your bogus English name and your poor grasp of the English language, the more other people realise you are lying. When you expose yourself as a lyer noone has any trust in what you are saying. So stop posting these bogus testimonials and go back to your day job of trying to scam people over the phone instead.

I too got a call from this company called techmate solutions posing as a Dell partner. Same story of csrss.exe being a virus and they have been receiving notifications from spyware/melaware in my computer. I went through with the steps until the point she asked me to install some free application. I knew about the scam and gave her some of the choiciest expletives I could think of. She hung up in a real hurry....:-)

he mentioned my ip address and it was like 7 numbers LOL
i nearly fell for it holy crap and my mum got pissed off so she just hung up LOL
