had numerous calls from this number regarding my computer security not being safe and they have tracked somebody trying to get into my computer. Anyone else had calls about this?

Like others, I've received several phone calls from www.winpctech.net. Cold calls from India.I went along with it to a point,as the offer to "fix virus and windows application problems" by remote seemed plausible, given outsourcing and micro companies. Operator was polite, seemed genuine, as does the Website I was referred to.  Max Williams was mentioned, along with $93 for 3yr warranty (?) and tech help offer. I'm not tech savvy, so felt uncomfortable about running things, counting error messages and the suggestions of a virus on my computer.I refused when credit card details, phone no and addrress were required, even though seems info will be encrypted. Last call the operator "Jimmy"did not seem to get my need for some guarantee of service beyond his assurance or that winpctech was being reported as a scam. Just kept requesting I call 0280062085 to check up. Maybe I will. Either winpctech is bogus or someone else's giving them a really bad name that they need to do something about.

Parents received a similar call regarding an error with their notebook which apparently had viruses and errors in windows.  The only thing is my parents have never been online with their notebook (no net access at their house) and only use it for word processing.  Seems very suspicous

Yes, my wife got a call today. When you don't answer their questions properly, they get aggressive with you. They used the names Kevin and Sophie. Hilarious!!

Yes, I just got a call now about malaware and virus problems on my computer.  I was having computer problems last night so their story was plausible.  However, I was wary so asked for a number to call them back.  They gave 0280062085.  When I called it, I received a voicemail message with no identifying company details etc so will be ignoring this from now on.

I've been getting calls too for about a week now. They've just rung again now. Got contact details as I was in the middle of putting baby to bed and it was this number 0280062085, caller was 'Sophie' and told me I could speak to her supervisor 'Kevin' when I called back. Also very suspicious of this. After reading the above, I wont be calling them back. They're advising that they are the sole provider of Windows and that my computer is subject to spyware/malware and that its 'very technical' and I wouldn't be able to find the fault myself.

mother got a phone call about this and was directed to go to a site  called www.logmein.com. which asked for a security number. has any one else had this site yet?

Logmein is a great tool for remote accessing a computer.

DO NOT let them do anything to your PC, or have you do anything to aloow them access.  It is bogus!

I also have received phone calls (2) from these people.  The first time when I asked for a phone number to phone them back he said 'just a moment' then hung up.  The second time he asked me why I wanted the phone number and I told him I would not do anything on my computer until I had checked on them.  He wanted to know why and I replied that there were so many scams.  He insisted they were the only technical support for windows.  I have no intention of allowing them to do anything to my computer and I wonder how they manage to get my phone number.  The number they gave me to ring was 0280062085 and he said his name was Vicky - extemely heavy Indian accent.  I wonder why Windows are not doing anything about this crowd!!!  I tried to find a phone number to phone Windows without success.

My mother in law also recieved a call from this mob.  They informed her that her computer had a trojan.  She informed them that I worked in a high up position in IT and that she will seek my advice and the caller quickly ended the call.  

This company is acting un-professionally please be wary if they call you!  

If they call me I will endeavour to find out what they are trying to do your computer and provide a detailed report on their actions using logmein.

I received a call from these guys today (QLD, Australia) and the phone was only connected 3 days ago.

I knew it was dodgy from the get go but thought I would play it out untill it went too far.

She also started by saying there was a problem with a spate of malicious attacks in my area and she was contracted by MS  to find out if I had been effected and how to solve the problem.

She had a very heavy accent but I also think she was using this to her advantage by playing the language card whenever I wanted details and just went back to her script.

She asked me to get onto my PC and lead me into the 'Computer Management console', here she asked me to look for any errors marked with red X's, now of course there were because there always is from one thing or another.
She asked me to count them and tell her how many, as if I would be scared by the 'dangerous' number of errors.

She then lead me into CMD or the 'Command Console' and asked me to run the 'ASSOC' command.

This brings up a list of all the different file extensions being used on my computer, she made out that this was a list of all the virus/tojan programs on my system.

Then she asked me to scroll down and read out the ZFSENDTOTARGET CLSID in order to 'identify' my computer and make sure it was the correct one.

This all started to get a bit much so I disconnected my laptop from the net to be on the safe side and asked what next waiting for her to tell me to set up a remote connection.

Then she asked me to hold on for a second, about a minute went by and then a man got on the phone with a much clearer accent and said "Has she told you about everything? how much warranty do you want?"

I said "I thought you werent selling anything, did you lie to me?" and he hung up.

LULZ....

I can see how this would catch people out who arent very tech savy though.

I've been called three times by WinPCTech in the last 4 days (in Melbourne), even though am on the do not call register, which I bluntly reminded them of each time and - don't even own a PC!  Definite scam.  Who ensures that companies who ignore the do not call register are fined?

Hi I have just had these people on to me. One was called Elvis! After doing the "cmd" and "assoc" the "CLSID" number he read out to me matched and he said it was a unique number to ID my computer to Microsoft. He rang off saying an engineer would call me back, without asking about money! Whilst I was waiting I found this website and also checked on my daughter's laptop. The CLSID number is identical! When challenged he said I hadn't heard correctly. So I hung up.

Recieved a call today at 13:12 today (27/10/2010) from a representative from WinPcTech and passed on to a next leir Jimmy who is in india. They got me to look at the evebnt viewer and all it's faults by saying I have a computer problem and will help me resolve my issues. Did ask Jimmy if they knew I had a problem in my computer what system was I erunning and was it eitherr 32/64 byte because one can cause a problem with some downloads. Also told that will be given AVG, will be valid till 2018 which I found hard to believe.
Got the name of company, phone number, web site address and said I'd check them out on the web to see if they are a scam. Jimmy was nice and with some indepth question he did falter in that asked am I running XP, Vista or Window 7 and he picked the wrong one again making me think a scam especially when they will require of me $100 and gfeel when I ring the number given to me they will ask for probably my banking info which regardless they wouldn't get anyway.
Jimmy seemed a bit confused re: term, gatherer and when I mentioned the term backweb he didn't seem to have a clue or glossed over it.
Must admit it sounded good at a reasonable price with lots of bonuses to get you in so I do really wisjh it is true but as they say if it's to good to be true it is?

Hi yes this is a scam.
1. You can tell they are reading a script
2. They won't give their company name (in case you google it)
3. They call with number withheld and are reluctant to give you their number so you can call back
4. They say "your computer is showing an error" but if you ask, "would that be the desktop or laptop?" they say "either" meaning they don't care
5. They ask you to do something plausible - twice now they've talked me through opening the event viewer to see how many errors there are; express horror if more than 10 - but these are simple housekeeping errors, things like trying to access a disk before its up to speed or terminating an office programme suddenly.
6. A new one for me today - start the cmd window and enter "assoc"; scroll down to the bottom and see the zfsendtotarget entry - the operator will read out the CLSID and remarkably (!) read it out to you to show she knows it is your computer serial number  - but everyone's is the same

Sooner or later they want you to enter their company into a "logmein" screen so they can "fix" these non-existant errors and either strip your on-line banking details or sharge you $100 for a non-existant service.

So steer well clear

I went one step too far when I said my CLSID was different and I was really worried about it!!!

He hung up on me!

Still, its a guy who needs to do a job so I have a degree of empathy for them, but nuts to that crap!
