I got a phone call and said this call from the Australian reclaim export department and ask that I am entitled to get $5248.00 and I gave a reference number to keep and make a call to this number and ask for Peter Anderson or Rebecca Brown to process the claim. I called and asked for Peter Anderson said I am. He told me to pay $199 to process the application. It is not an Australian accent and also it was noisy.

I had a call from 0280914944 that claimed l was to receive over $5000 from the government in over payments l had made . The man, l cant recall his name, gave me a personal application code he called it  and a number he urged me to call straight away. He was quite insistant that l hang up and call the number he gave me. I called the police and then my bank who said thy believed it is a scammer.

My husband had a phone call from this number, there was a women with a strange accent, her name was Kathleen Douglas She said my husband is entitle to get $ 5248 Au. She said She is from The reclaim expert department. She urged my husband to get a form from the Post Office and call Her back , when his got the form She said, if somebody ask who's the receiver of the $ 199, say it is for a family member. He called back, the lady was very helpful, to help him to fill out the form. She then ask him, when his going to pay the $ 199,what is a legal fee for a solicitor,  The money  to be paid for Tulasa Magar, at  Kathmandu Nepal 21. Royal st.About one hour later, the lady called back, if my husband paid the legal fee. He said, his car is broke down, what about if he pay the fee, when the postman bring the check, what should be arrive on next Monday, she said, it's not possible, she has to follow the process. I don't think, it is true, because  if the Australian Government  owes money to someone, just would pay the money, without any Nepal solicitor envolvement. If anyone receive a phone call from this number, just be very careful!!!!

My mum just got the same message 3 weeks after my dad died, I got a fraud pack from the police. Hopefully we can lock this scum up  & the deport them

I got a call from a guy claiming to be refunding me $5248 and requesting I call 02 8091 4944 to claim my money. Looked up the number and found all this. Not going to call them back.

I did give them my date of birth though. What should I do now?

I also received a call today saying that I would receive a cheque for $5,248.00.  When I said it was a hoax call and I was going to report it, they hung up.  I tried again from my mobile and they answered, and when I said I was reporting the number they hung up again.  Please ring ACCC Scam Watch  on 1300 795 995 to report this number.

Hi I just got a call stating I was entitled to receive 5200 plus dollars from overpayments, yeah sure, so I played along I gave him incorrect spelling and a different date of birth etc and he was very insistant that I call his manager a call to confirm the details. then wanted to know how I would like to be paid either check or bank transfer, I told him a check would be fine, then wanted to know which bank is better for me to cash the check quickly when it arrives, I told any bank would be fine, I guess thats to find out which bank I deal with to make it easier to for them to possibly access accounts.??? anyway just wanted to make you all aware that there are low lifes everywhere, and dont give anyone any relevant information over the phone that you did not instigate the call with. English was obviously his second language so that was the first red flag. and also that the government wanted to give money back for silly reasons. (again - yeah right).

One of the more sophisticated scams. They pretend to call from a government agency like ACCC or ATO.

Claim that they have investigated Aussie banks and found that banks have overcharged EFTPOS fee and they have a refund of $7628 for me. They had all my details except DOB. Did not ask for anything just gave me a reference number and asked me to call 02 8091 4944 during business hours.

I called with my reference number was told that I need to pay a solicitors fee to facilitate bank transfer. I can go through Aussie lawyers for $1000 or I can use an outsourced overseas lawyer for $199.

Lots of background noise, I am from Indian background so picked some real vile conversation in the background, decided to play along with fake details and let them that I will be reporting to Scamwatch and the Indian police.

The girl lost it and proceed to use very colourful language.

I have had a similar call only they said they were from the tax department thought I would check the number out first.  I was to ring Rebecca Brown.  The man had an Indian or [***] accent

I have received a call today and was informed that I am receiving "the refund" of $7268 in the mail for this over charge by the banks. He is from the "Reclaim Department of the Australian Federal Government".
(Indian person who struggled to understand me) (lot of background noise and phones ringing, so this is a full scale operation)

I asked the person if he has access to my bank account to calculate that and he said no. Then I asked  how would he know the amount overcharged and he said it is a government estimate.
He asked if I would like to receive a direct deposit or a cheque and I said a cheque wil be fine.
they know that people do not want to give their bank detail, so they give the option of a "cheque".
Want to make it sound more realistic..

I realised it is a scam and I started to play along, by giving a wrong bank name and wrong date of birth. Then he gave me a ref no. and asked me to phone Rebecca Brown on 02-80914944.

Rebecca sounds like a mature/older person on the phone and Indian, but there was no background noise at all. (she must have her own office...)

I phoned and she said I have to pay $199. I must go to the post office and get a Western Union Form and call her again. I must not tell the staff at the post office about this for they will not want me to receive this money. I said to her there will be a $15 charge to send money via Western Union and she said it is included in the $199.

I am having a tea and forget about it.!

It was interesting that she asked who I banked with and wanted to confirm my date of birth. Of course I gave false information on both counts. She said goodbye and I said "thanks you thieving [***]" as I hung up.

It's all fairly obvious these days because scammers all try the same scam. The fact that they want you to use Western Union to transfer money from the federal government is also a good indicator that they are not on the level.

I just had the same call, they had all my details including my date of birth,  5 minutes later the same person called and asked if I had called his supervisor, I replied with " no but I have talked to the federal police, the person hang up instantly.

Same amount and the same number to call back with a reference just a few mins back. They had all my details name, address etc.

Just got a call from an Indian sounding lady claiming to work for the Australian Federal Government Reclaim Department, allegedly ringing from Sydney, saying I'm going to get over $7,000 (didn't hear full amount due to poor line). All I need to do is ring this number (02 8091 4944) with my reference number to get a cheque sent to me. She knew my name & had most of my address details. The errors in my address would have been clear to anyone from Australia. She wanted my date of birth and Bank details too. I refused.

I too had the same call today. I rang the number and played along with it. The payment details I got were :

She kept hanging up on me but I dialled the number so their phone wouldn't disconnect until I hung up. I'm not sure where to report it but the details are there if someone wants to investigate.

I just received the same magical phone call from the "Federal Government" Reclaims department telling me that i was owed an amount of approximately $7000. I struggle to understand heavy Indian accents so i could only get the gist of some things the male caller said.
He said that the government have done investigations in NSW and Victoria and found that over 9000 people have been overcharged various fees. All they needed was my date of birth and to choose whether or not i wanted to be paid by cheque or through a bank account transfer.
They then gave me a reference number (MO207) and asked me to call 02 8091 4944 and to speak to Maree Edward or Gary Smith. I told the caller that i knew it was a scam and have not called the number.

Update. The same man just called me back. I told him that i had reported the phone number that he gave me to 'Scam Watch' . He still insisted that it wasn't a scam so i told him that i would ring the number and tell them the same thing. When i rang a man called "Gary" answered and when i told him that i heard that this was a scam where he was going to ask me to go to the post office to transfer $199 for solicitor fees he told me to stop wasting his valuable time and hung up on me.

I had the same call today saying I was due for refund $7100 after yrs over charged by GST, ATM and more, to get chq paid to my account I had to call 0280914944 ask for Mario Attwood or Gary Smith, I felt this a scam so I called the number played a game to then be told I had to pay $199 at nearest Post Office for legal representation to get the $7100 paid to my account...I told him I didn't have $199 to go to the Post Office where he said he couldn't pay my chq...I posted story on facebook....

It has been referred to Scam Watch, who confirm it is a scam. Hang up if you receive such a call.
