I can confirm it's optus customer care team doing a 'health check' on your service. There had been a mistake on my account that I was too lazy to fix up (too difficult to explain to a non-native english speaker) and they have rectified it now so that's good.

Who this number

First thing caller said was she was doing health check and wanted a pin number. That call got cut short very quickly after I asked where she was from (the Phillipines). Australians need jobs. I told her I would go take my phone to Optus Doctor. There is nothing wrong with my phone but Optus has [***] service.

Called me, was courteous and was asking me for my birthddate.
I said, "You are the one who called me, aren't you supposed to know that already?"
He said, "Just for security check, sir."
No way I was gonna give him more information than what he needs to know :P

He doesn't sound like a scammer, but just to be sure, I got rid of him ;)

I got a call from "Leanne" said she had a "special offer" but only if I told her my DOB... I don't just give out my personal info if someone says they are calling from Optus.

I asked what the special offer was and she wouldn't say... :(

For the past 3-4 days they keep calling me and hanging up on me after I say 'hello'

It's so annoying. Very bad service Optus. Shame on you.

its bad service form optus but some of you epople need to be reasonable - under australian privacy laws a verification process must be adhered to before discussing anything - how would you like it if they didnt do this and went and gave your eprsonal details out to anyone? maybe your partner answered and tehy tell them your bills late??? be reasonable guys and use some common sense. noone can do anything with your birthday anyway!

They've called me about 8 times today - I'm at work and can't answer it. I called the number back and it doesn't go anywhere. It doesn't ring, but the line souds busy almost immediately.

then why are they asking for it?  it can be used to verify how you are - exactly as optus are doing. if a scammer already has your address and phone number, getting your DOB is the next logical bit of info they'd need to acquire to do a jobon you - and you willingly give it to them?

I received two missed calls. I called the number back and got an automated message that said it was Optus Customer Care checking if I was happy with my services. When the message ended the call ended.

I have also received calls from this number. 3 times over the past 3 days. I thought it was someone mucking around as the phone only rings a few times. Did an online search for number and found this page.  Will ignore it from now on.

It's just Optus customer service, I think if you call the number back and get the automated voice message they shouldn't call again. I usually get these if I have forgotten to pay my phone bill.

These twerps have been annoying me on my mobile. Today one left a voicemail saying nothing but my full name. Creepy.

Got a call from this number, I am an optus customer. Answered and said hello and it hung up on me. Friggen spastic way to treat paying customers. Sooner I can [***] telephony services completely the better.

Why would anyone provide a cold caller with their personal details? If Optus believes my bill is overdue they can SMS me a friendly reminder from one of their registered numbers. And I think it's a little naive to believe 'no one can do anything if they have your birthdate'. Good luck out there Bames!

Just so you know, that's idiotic. It's a security check, most companies do that whether they call you or you call them. Mobiles aren't genetically locked only to their owner after all.

You are absolutely correct Barnes. They have to make sure they are talking to the right person. If hey didn't some vindictive person could make changes to your account. My husband has a pin number and I'm listed as being able to make changes to his account but I still have to quote the pin number and my date of birth. Of course they know it because they have it in front of them. They want to make sure you know it. They are annoying at times but harmless. Sometimes they come up with different plans that can save you money.
