(03) 8370 2320
Hello,
Just wanted to post a warning for others who may in future be contacted by Probe Group.
We have received several calls from blocked numbers but finally had a message left on our phone asking us to call 03 8370 2320. We followed up, the operator continually asked for our personal information - but would not divulge any information regarding the nature of the call and why they needed our details.
Given the current climate of identity theft, scams and fraud, why any organisation would expect people to freely offer information without any explanation baffles me. The operators admitted to being based in the Philippines. They also stated that 'the ACCC prevents them, by law, from divulging any information regarding their business operation'. However, upon further investigation, we discovered the company has a website, an Australian 1300 number and clearly lists all of their business operations on the website. When I called the 1300 number in business hours I asked, 'can you tell me what your business does?', the operator instantly replied, 'we're a debt collection company'. So they obviously have different policies for potential business customers as opposed to those they are chasing for payment of a debt.
As much as I hate to admit this, they are a legitimate company and are not trying to scam people - but the way in which they handle these matters is appalling. I don't see their practices as being effective for their business customers. I don't know if they buy the debt and chase the funds themselves or if they simply try to recover the money for their business customers - but in any case they are still pathetic and I would advise others to investigate the matter further themselves.
There is not a lot of information on the net for people who have had similar experiences. I have been so infuriated by this company's practices that I feel impelled to let others know what they are about. So if you have been asked to call (03) 8370 2320 (a Melbourne local number which diverts to the Philippines call centre), you'll know what to expect.
Obviously this all could have been avoided had we received the original paper bill and paid it on the due date - but it's life I guess!
Good luck!
BMWKML - Caitlin replies to BMWKMLI keep getting missed calls by this number, you say it is a debt company however I have notpurchased anything and I dont owe any money, are you sure it isnt a scam?
- Bec| 2 repliesI can confirm this company is legit. They just called me to finalise an outstanding bill from a house we moved out from months ago and never got.

- clancey g replies to Bec| 1 replyi've just got through to them, probe group in Melbourne, it turns out mine was started by Queensland motor ways, i had an account and closed it, then did some trips and could not talk to them as was on hold over 30 mins , tried 4 days i gave up, finally got on to them and luckily for me asked for reference numbers when i payed via credit card i was 4 days till i payed them. so dept account goes to Philippines with prob group and they do horrendous collection practices which makes it hard to get a straight answer or even understand them, im talking to ACCC atm. any way i contacted prob group in Australia 0n 1300669522 and they had my info phone number and this whole mess was started by 2 trips on Clem 7 tunnel in Brisbane, the motor way groups just sends all this to collection agency and every one has to deal with all this even though i had payed a day or 2 late. contacted the motor way group and on their web page you can pay for casual use its top left, just not very clear description how to use it. so contact the Australian office in Melbourne give them your phone number ask what it relates to and from whom and complain to relevant organizations with details keep records research, ive had a week solid so far off calls hassles when i have payed bills and their side just keep going at you, i hope this helps others cut through the process regards Clancy
http://www.probegroup.com.au/contact_us.html - Jill replies to clancey gI have had calls from this lot in the last few days. Qld Motorways also use another Philippines mob through a Melbourne company called something I can't remember (Geoffrey Mendelsohn lawyers?) and it plays out just like this. In my case, we moved away from Qld but our daughter still had one of our cars there and used the Clem 7 four times. I got the bill and tried to link the Clem 7 account to the GoVia but it failed every time, so after getting a couple of warning mails from the collections mob and then three calls from the Philipines, I paid it by BPay. The calls continued so I rang the Melbourne number who said I had to send printed evidence of paying the account. I told him to contact Qld Motorways because I had done my bit: my Clem7 account online shows that I have no outstanding debt. The car concerned has now been transferred into our daughter's name and although the account was paid over four weeks ago, the collection calls have resumed, this time using the name Probe. I told the woman to go to hell after she informed me that the call was being recorded and I had to confirm my date of birth. My understanding of Australian law is that no-one can be recorded without their consent unless there is a criminal investigation happening. To the Qld government I send the same message as I gave to Dawn from the Philipines.
- Cici| 3 repliesThis company is disgraceful. They called me and requested that I reveal all of my personal details; full name, date of birth, full address, etc. before they would give me the purpose of THEIR call. I hope the general public would not disclose these details to a total stranger. Although this company may be legitimate, they must be aware of something called identity theft. All they would tell me is they were calling on behalf of Geoffrey Mendelsohn lawyers. I have never had a bad debt in my life, so I can only assume they have the wrong person.

- BobOver the last couple of days, I have received a number of blocked number calls. Today, a blocked call left an unintelligible message giving a 7 digit code, and this phone number to call re an URGENT case. I phoned and was answered by a highly accented female. I firstly asked what it was about and what they do (the company sounded like 'Prose" !). The response was vague and meaningless. I said that I did not want the call recorded, and the response was an immediate 'yes, it's stopped'. I was then asked for all my personal details which I refused to do to an unknown, accented 'company' over the phone. She then said that these details are essential for further details of what they're on about - date of birth, address .. (she actually knew the name of the suburb in which I have lived). Does she want my credit card number ?? I finalised by saying that she should post me the details etc as she has my mailing address. She said very well then, but it will just contain a statement that I should phone this number (0383702320) to proceed ! Sounds so much like a stinking scam, but I shall watch the post to see of any further developments. By the way, I have no out-standing debts. Be very careful. Their website is also very VAGUE, for me anyway

- Baz| 1 replyUnfortunately they are Legit.
There are used by cheap companies such as 'Simply Energy' for debt collection.
I agree that the way they initiate their calls is wrong and most people (including myself would not give this information out with advice on what they were calling for.
On the up side however, the staff I dealt with were both ok and very helpful in the end (unlike Simply Energy).
You should be able to verify who you are by just providing your address, you do not need to provide them your D.O.B. if you feel uncomfortable doing so.- Caller: Probe Group

- SueI received an automated call and tried to call the 1300 number from my mobile but the message said this number is not available from a mobile or in your area. They are obviously not very professional!

- Obvious replies to Cici| 1 replyI debt is a serious and highly confidential matter; you cannot go divulging that data to anyone just because you say you are the person they are looking for you have to prove it - it is neither here nor there if you refuse to comply with the law but it is to your own detriment because they cannot help you until you do. There are serious penalties if you breach the privacy act and one of which is a $220,000 fine one of which I am sure the person you are talking to cannot afford. It is for that reason that a debt collection agency will not divulge the reason for their call or any personal details of the matter to a person until they have satisfied Privacy Law. It is not them but you that suffers when you refuse to comply, with credit rating default and possible legal action all because you are offended someone is looking out for your private and personal information. Yes there are ID theft offenders out there but as you can clearly see a simple google search and a few calls and you have the validation that they are a legit company. My advice, comply with privacy law, stop assuming it isnt for you because they did call you and have your name right thus it is obvious it IS for your & stop complaining that ppl are protecting your personal data.
