Anna, claiming to be from Telstra regarding my internet connection.     I am not a telstra customer and she hung up when I asked what country she was calling from.

I just received a call from a guy claiming to be Shaun Parker from Telstra - technical department.
He told me I had been downloading and/or uploading malicious files and that unless I cooperated with them my account would be terminated.
I didn't believe that it was a legit call so I asked for his number (03 90284553) and told him that I would call him back. I didn't call the number he gave me but called Telstra instead and explained the situation. The staff member from Telstra checked my account activity and notified me that the call definitely hadn't come from Telstra.

In the UK this scam has been running for ages.  The calls come from India and use fake numbers via Skype.  The people who call try to use scare tactics and lack of computer knowledge to get you to give them remote access to your computer.  If they get it they will install spyware/malware to steal personal information like bank details and passwords. Sometimes they ask fore money to "fix" the nonexistent faults, but not until after they have got remote access.  This is because they know that most people will refuse to pay but, by then, the damage has been done.  No-one who 'phones like this knows anything about our computers.  They don't know our ISP or our IP address.  They are just thieves and scammers.

Received a phone call from "Jacob" claiming to be from Telstra, to tell me I have been downloading malicious programmes for the last few weeks.  I stopped him, asked for his phone number and where he was phoning from.  He gave the above number and said he was phoning from Melbourne.
