    Fed up
14 calls in 2 days, surely this can be considered harrasment.

The RAC brand is owned by the AVIvA group (Norwich Union) Their head office media desk phone number is +44 207 662 7544 and the corporate media managers mobile is  +44 7800 699662

The email address of the group CEO is andrew.moss@aviva.com

I think that anyone who has been hasseled by calls from this number should complain directly using the details above.

When you complain to Moss about his organisations harrasment of customers, you will have the 'pleasure' of a totally inadequate and factually inaccurate from an operative called 'Toby Hole'.

You do not have to accept this response, you should continue to send your emails direct to andrew.moss@aviva.com and insist, as you are entitled to that he deals  with the matter.

Remember you are under no obligation whatsoever to follow any complaints procedure that they may want to impose on you.

Subject: Re: Unwanted & uninvited calls from 08001977140

    Dear Mr ****

The Aviva group, including all of our subsidiary companies, are totally uninterested in providing good service to any of our customers. It is the group policy to allow our operatives to make whatever statements they like at anytime, irrespective of the accuracy or honesty of such statements, to the customer so that the customer feels that their issue is been dealt with.

We have put in place a multi level complaints procedure which is designed provide accurate statistics on the number of complaints we receive and to increase company revenue by use of premium rate 0870, 0871, 0844 & 0845 numbers. Operatives involved in these schemes receive special training to maximize this revenue stream by deliberately extending calls as long as possible and leaving customers on hold for several minutes each call. We will later this year be introducing 0960 numbers to further increase this revenue stream and we also be selling customer information to third parties, as this has been proven to highly profitable.

We do not apologize for deliberately calling you on 24 separate occasions within 48 hours or for losing the new direct debit details that you sent to us using one of your pre addressed envelopes.

The Aviva group never admit to doing anything wrong, we are an insurance company and hence are perfect and feel we are correct in treating our customers with no respect whatsoever.  Our customer service statistics show that in 99.99% of all cases the customer was totally at fault, in the other 0.01% the customers complaint was found not to be valid.  You will find that these figures are compatible to other companies within this industry.

It is unfortunate if you feel that you have received bad service, or that our response has not been what you expected, however I feel that my operatives have acted perfectly in dealing with this matter.

I have arranged for our sales department to send details of our full product range and for members of our sales team to call you, via our automated silent call system,   at a time of our convenience. Calls from that system may involve been left on hold for periods of up to 15 minutes before been given a premium rate number to us to cal us back.

    Yours sincerely

    Andrew Moss

Been calling my landline for weeks now. never got through yet since they ring off so quickly. I'm registered with TPS, so they've got an official complaint to deal with now. Hope they get a good kicking from OFCOM.

I just got this call, and I answered it after 2 rings but got silence. Intrigued, I googled it and got this page with a huge log of complaints. Companies like this need to sort themselves out.

Have been getting calls from this number for several days now,It has always been my policy not to answer calls from numbers which I do not recognise, if someone really wants to talk to me they can leave a message on my voice mail, if they can't be bothered to do that then the call is ignored.

I keep getting these as well to my mobile and landline and tried the number suggested above 0800 722722 but it did not work. When I called 08001977140 they gave a number 0800 159050 to ask not to be called again but they are only open Mon- Thurs 11.30-7.30 and not on Friday!
You are right about the strange way it rings once or twice and hangs up - how annoying!!!

RAC do make outgoing calls to existing customers and those who have contacted us to enquire about breakdown cover with RAC. Where we have obtained a phone number, and consent to use this number, we will load this into an automated call database which calls several numbers at once. Where the number of calls picked up exceeds the number of people we have available to handle the call, the call is terminated automatically after 2 rings. By calling 1471 we are identified as the caller and a contact number is given.

Obviously, we try to match the number of handlers with the anticipated calls that are picked up, but it doesn't always work out that way. Additionally, we are regulated by Ofcom and operate within their requirements regarding the number of abandoned calls when calling out using automated diallers. The abandoned call rate must be less than 3%, and we operate well below this.

We will normally call to follow up on a membership renewal, where the member hasn't renewed for some reason, or to enquire whether a previous quote for RAC cover was of interest. We do not 'cold call' anyone unless we have previously  had contact from them.

The Telephone Preference Service (www.tpsonline.org.uk) can help prevent unwanted calls, however their explanation, copied below from their web site, will explain why this isn't always the case.

Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, for example those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case of charities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the early stages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled to call you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you have previously told them specifically that you object to them calling you for marketing purposes.

We will always remove your phone number  from our outbound dialler if requested, simply call freephone 0800 0159050 and give your details.

Finally, the supposed letter from Andrew Moss is, as most will have deduced, a spoof. Commenting on it further is pointless as most people reading it will draw their own conclusions as to its validity.

When leaving details on the 0800 0159050 number, please make sure you include the following:

    Membership number (if applicable)
    Full name
    Post code and house name/number
    Phone number

This will help us remove your contact information from our dialler. We have had some contacts where we have been unable to remove people due to not having enough information.
