Its a company called Equidebt.  I had a missed call from that number and rang them back.  The girl was quite nice and told me who and what they were, a debt collection agency.
At this point I was starting to think, what the $$&^?  Anyway, she asked me for ref: number and I told them I had no such thing (I had been rung by them before from a different number but when I rang back that time they would say anything, due to data protection act (load of balls).

Anyway, I asked them what they wanted (I have nor ever had any debt) and they didn't have a clue who I was.  The number they rang me on was not on their records so they couldn't look up anything on their systems.

Bit concerned that they have been ringing me but they really are a bunch of dimwits

I received a similar call but it was a different number 01789473888. the gentleman told me that before anything as of security reasons. he will like to confirm my d.o.b and full address. After that he will explain me who am I ?
Well, I said first you got my number and without knowing how the hell you are, how do you expect me to give out my personal details on the phone like that ?
Anyways he gone rude and it became an argument as he told me that he will not cancel the call until i won't tell him. Therefore I just hanged up and came online to find out who EQL Financial services are ? As that what he told me during the argument.
    EQL ?????

    The pariah of debt collectors
Ref EQL. Let me tell you all how it works. You default on a debt say £3000 to a credit card company. They chase and chase then give up and write it off as a bad debt to make the company books look better. However they mostly write these debts off by selling them on to a collection agency. The collection agency can and do pay as little as 12 pence in the pound. This means that they have paid £250.00 for the debt. However they chase you for the full amount. This seems grossly unfair because if the original lender had offerd you this deal, I feel sure that 99% of debters would pay, but of course they cannot offer you this solution as it would open the floodgates. Now the clever bit, they offer you a SOLUTION. It's a debt managment plan or IVA, Individual Voluntary Arrangement. They often use the ruse "A little known government legislation". IVA's are NOT for everone. How it works? Lets say EQL have bought your debt. They contact you hassle you until you answer. They then offer you a way out of this debt. They ask how much can you afford per month. They multiply that by 12 then by 5 to give them a gross figure. If it is too low, (IE they are not going to make enough profit out of it) they will press you to raise it. If you default you will be back to square one with them chasing you. Your debt is NOT written off. You are obligated to pay that amount for the full 60 months. They say interest will be stopped, if the debt has already been sold then the interest will already have stopped. The agency cannot charge you interest on a debt they have bought. Next time any debt collection agency hassles you for a debt that you do not owe THEM, ask them how much they paid for it. Offer to reimburse that cost plus say £100 for thier trouble, admin etc. You are not refusing to pay just making sure that neither party is out of pocket. Unfortunately they will not tell you, they will say it is an industry confidentiality. Remember you did not take out the debt with the collection agency. The credit card company has in all probabilty written it off and sold it on. There is a proviso to this. Some credit card companies and others use in house legal collectors. These are entirely diffrerent from private debt collection agencies. WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY AND INSIDIOUS SYSTEM WHERE PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS MAKE MONEY OUT OF YOUR DEBT. IN A LOT OF CASES ESPECIALLY CREDIT CARDS, MOST PEOPLE ARE HAPPY AND ABLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR PAYMENTS. IT IS WHEN THE CREDIT AGENCIES DECIDE TO UP THIER INTEREST RATES THAT PEOPLE FIND THEM SELVES IN TROUBLE.Advice do not take out a credit card EVER. Do without items until you have saved up enough to pay for them. If this is impossible then make sure that you can afford the loan, fixed rate, and pay it. It is other peoples money that you are borrowing and you should pay it back.

My 11-year-old daughter received a new mobile phone for Christmas, but since that time she has been plagued with calls from unknown numbers, including the one above. Obviously, she never answers calls from numbers she doesn't recognise, so after a search on the internet, we traced them all back to Equidebt (who also refer to themselves as EQL when they leave a message). Yesterday afternoon, an automated message was left from EQL asking for a gentleman we'd never heard of and giving a reference number. I emailed a complaint to them and threatened to take legal action. I received a reply today saying that my daughter's mobile number was not on their records. We have the evidence of course! It wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't hear from them again after this. No one in this house has ever had any debt.
