Cold call re home insulation, using grant availability as an excuse, and reluctant to admit status.  Claiming to be calling on behalf of "energy supply companies".  Not filtering call list by excluding Telephone Preference Service registered numbers

Called me claiming to be on behalf of British Gas, and when I said "i am not interested in buying anything" he mentioned the grant availability for home insulation. I told them not to call again and that I was listed not to receive marketing calls but he simply hung up. They have called twice more since then but I refuse to answer.

Cold called several times. an Indian guy saying his name was Adam. I told him I wasn't interested and was registered with TPS but he was difficult to get rid of and stated that he was exempt from TPS as he wasn't selling anything and was outside the UK.
Gave me the phone number of his company as 08081 102030 and web address of homeenergysaver.co.uk
The whole thing looks like a scam!

Useful comments. I had been asked to link to them from my own well placed energy advice website. I don't like linking to this kind of company.

Homeenergysaver cold called me. Very polite. Good patter. Well spoken Indian call centre? Gave name as Andy Richards. Wanted to get HES to call me to make an appointment to look at loft. No problem. Wanted me to choose a password! Gave one I never use for anything else. Checked other info, (possibly to sell on? eg type of house, number of gas appliances, gas supplier). Then asked for email address. I refused. He spent ages "cross-checking the info". Then handed over to supervisor to "authorise the information". He gave name as Josh Matthews, and went over info given, said thanks for time and hung up. Still can't work out the supervisor bit! Not too bothered about cold call as I don't get many.

Interesting call tonight.  I usually get furious at a volcanic rate (which puts cold-callers off) but decided to play this a bit differently as have been waiting to try out the "wait and I'll get him/her" tactic.  Normal-sounding Indian man introduced himself as being from HES "working with the government" and was I the homeowner.  I didn't answer, choosing instead to ask 'who's paying your company".  He went into defensive mode and blathered a bit, but I persisted and he admitted that the energy supplier companies pay his lot to tell us about grants.  I said "so they're trying to get us to use the grants with them, it's a commercial operation not working for the government.  That doesn't surprise me, since you're calling a house that is on the TPS and interrupting our evening."  He wittered for a bit about this being a good time to call and then said "you're not on the TPS" I replied "we most certainly are."  Then added "anyway I'm not one of the homeowners, one of them is upstairs, do you want me to get him?"  He said "yes you are"  [Well I am, but since he didn't get my name, he had no idea of that.]  I replied "I'm not, who do you think you're speaking to?"  Him - "Ms xxxxx (correct)".  I said "That's not me, she's out at the moment.  The other homeowner is just upstairs, do you want me to get him?" (hoping to be able to play my leave-the-receiver-open trick).  At that point he clearly smelt a rat, and chose to say "you're on the TPS, we'll take you off our lists, sorry for bothering you" and end the call.

Gits, the lot of them.  Not the callers, their damn companies.  Still waiting to try leaving a cold-caller on hold so that it costs them something.

Th is company called me and I asked where they had got their data from...reply was The UK Homeowners List..never heard of it. I asked where HO was ..Poole in Dorset, I then spoke to Supervisor who confirmed that they were an outsourced call centre based in India, Info given to them by UK energy companies.
I tried calling the no he gave for the home energy service which was the above number but it was just an answer machine so I haven't bothered. I would like to know who sold my data on I think I will write to the Information Commissioner about it.

I had the same patter 3 times in the past 2 days. The first time was what sounded like a middle aged Englishman. I asked for a number to call back and was given 08081102030 which is an answering machine. Next time I was out and my wife took the call and suggested they speak to me this evening - they did. An Indian sounding guy this time. It was the same patter as yesterday about qualifying for a government grant as I haven't had one for 12 years. I asked which government department they work for and was told it's HES who are undertaking a surevy on behalf of several large energy companies and would I answer some questions. I asked which government department was paying the grant and was then directed to the supervisor. She asked if I was having a nice day so I asked her which government department is paying the grant. She said she doesn't work for the government - she works for HES. So I asked who would pay me the grant and she hung up.

HES just cold called, pleasant young woman asking if I was homeowner and had insulation done in last 10yrs and would I like a free loft survey for 50% grant (not over 70 or on income support....) eventually I got out of her that HES get paid by commission from energy companies and gave me the 102030 no. to call back - so I looked them up on google and won't be calling back!

She appologised for calling when I said I was on the Home Preference Service ("lots of people say that, some slip through the list....") and would "take me off their list" !!

It's a shame that they set up this reaction in people because the home energy grant is a good thing and if there is a 50% grant it would be good to have. I'll go and research the grant from bone fide sources now ......

I did have a call a few days ago asking about loft insulation and said I wasn't interested.

Today there was a message on the answering machine asking me to call 08081 102030.  I immediately smelt a scam and found this site when I did a search.

What a cheek!  I'm sure quite a few people would call the number as they didn't say who it was that was calling.

How many people can call 08081102030 and hang up when they answer, and how often can we do it.

I've just had a cold call from "Home Energy Services".  I'm TPS-registered too.  Indian-sounding voice again, definitely from locally not from India.  Cut off abruptly when I said I don't take cold calls.

Isn't there a regulator supposed to stamp on illegal practices?  If so why haven't they acted, or at least joined in this discussion string in nearly three years?
