I've been contacted by dozens of numbers of the format 0843410xxxx, like:

    08434100133
    08434100160
    08434102207
    08434102738
    08434106444
    08434108228
    08434109853

All silent, but other people report they are PPI cold callers based in Australia.

This is blatant phone spam, the email providers have developed effective filters against spam because it'd otherwise make their services unusable and there is no reason the telephone providers can't do the same (say dialling 7726, "spam" on the number pad and pressing a button to report the last number called - I see that there are mobile phone apps for it, bring on the landline smartphones) for similar reasons - people do get rid of their landlines because of the sheer numbers of calls (I can get a dozen a day). If they aren't prepared to raise their game then they should be forced to do so by law.

    Today I got calls from:

    0843 410 8228 - again
    0843 410 0676 - this one was a recorded message for mis-sold PPIs

You can buy 0843 "area code" numbers online (not that this company is the one selling the above numbers, it is just here as an example):

    http://www.numbersales.com/numbers/0843-numbers.jsp

So it looks like someone has bought the block of 0843 410 numbers to cover the originating numbers and, presumably, get around Anonymous Call Rejection (which I've signed up to). Which means that someone, somewhere in the UK must have the details of who owns these numbers, although how to find out who they are and how to cut them off

I complained about the automated calls to the Information Commissioner's Office (and threw in the silent calls in the comments):

    http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/marketing.aspx

I'm struggling to find a way to complain about the silent calls at Ofcom, because each individual number tends not to phone again (I wouldn't be surprised if they used this procedure to get around Ofcom's rules) and there is no comments box:

In case anyone is wondering if it is worth reporting the recorded messages to the ICO, then see this recent news about them cracking down on PPI mobile text pests - you can even see the people from the ICO in the Beeb' report that was on earlier today:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20528301
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-22400 ... ed-440-000.html
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/29/text_spam_megafine/

Of course, there is also the route this chap took recently:

Personally, I'd like to see this lot hauled from their beds one chilly morning and charged for their cold calling, and I'm going to keep plugging away until it happens.

Good, wasn't it.  The fact that the people they arrested were fined £400,000 made it even better.  That is what i call I fine.  Long may it continue.

I received a phone call on my mobile @13:09 today Thursday 13th December 2012.  I answered the phone without checking the Id caller as I was expecting a  call from my daughter.  No sooner I said hello when a recorded message came on  " This is an important message...."  obviously I didn't stay on the line til the end.

I am now worried that I will be charged hundreds of pounds just for answering my phone.

These unscrupulous people should not be allowed to carry on.

I just posted my complain re: unsolicited phone call.  I forgot to  mention the culprit No. 0843 410 8656.

Does anybody know whether this is another of the thousands of supposedly PPI claim firms?
