- SarahWho are they and what do they want?
- jan| 2 repliesHi I received a call from this number - lady saying it was revenue and customs about personal tax, could I confirm my NI - I said no can you confirm query in writing - she gave me number to call back on. two days later my husband got answer phone message - scottish guy saying to contact b4 8pm on monday and urgent. I called tax office today and they can confirm no record of these calls, they dont call mobiles and dont leave messages. Someone obviously has a list of names, mobiles and NI numbers - DONT give them any details. If you are unsure call the tax office using a number from their website or phone book. They record and flag all their calls. You also have the right to demand a written confirmation of the query before participating in any phone conversation.

- JayI just received a call from the scottish guy asking to speak to my wife. Fortunately she had just left for work. He said he was calling from Revenues & Customs and left this number. This list that they have can't be that current because he asked for Mrs. M.B. - my wife dropped the B my deed poll 2 years ago!
- LeeHmmm, just received a message on my answer phone on my mobile, same scottish accent, asking me to call back, good job I did get suspicious, I typed the number in google, and it came up with this page. Seems like theres a big scam going on, I will call up the real revenue and customs tomorrow and inform them.
- Lee| 2 repliesThis number is a legitimate number, had a good look around, its for the tax credits recovery. This link has all the department numbers on it.

- GambonI had a message left on my voicemail at 8:30am today from these people asking me to ring back before 8pm tomorrow. I rang them back and had to confirm all my details to a scottish woman. They say I owe them over £360 in overpaid tax credits! Also claim to have sent me several letters about this, none of which arrived at my house and if i don't pay it or arrange payment before 8pm tomorrow, they will take legal action against me. Bring it on I say!
- Caller: Revenue & Customs

- toyscolourshi i have just received a phone call on my mobile but the phone number was not withheld! guy saying from the customs and revenues about a personal tax issue! he asked me to confirm some security details - full name, NI ,DOB, address,
i said i would not give this information over the telephone, he gave me a number to call to verify the company etc 08453003950 this number is very sim to inland revenue.
i called inland revenue imediatly to ask if they were looking for me! and suprise suprise they were not, they knew nothing about it, they took details of both numbers and were going to investicate it.
so please please if you receive one of these calls DO NOT give any personal details to them, if in any doubt call the real inland revenue and confirm etc- Caller: customs and revenues
- jasmineSupposedly the Inland Revenue, urgent and wanting personal information before they would reveal why. Refused to give it, so was provided with a number to call back. Called the 'official' Inland Revenue first and they had no idea why anyone would want me ... they did not recognise the number .... believe me, they spent a good half an hour researching it whilst I was on the phone .... and they told me not to answer personal questions over the phone. Stressed they would write to me if it was that important. Inland Revenue investigating the bogus number.
- Caller: supposedly Inland Revenue
- rupertI had a scottish guy call me today claiming to be from the Inland Revenue. No name was given but he immediately told me he wanted info from me. He sounded nervous, mispronounced my name and rang me on a number that the Revenue do not have (my work number). I challenged and he told me to ring back using a number which is the genuine IR 0845 number. He also gave me a reference number which is the same as appears on my tax return. However still he did not give a contact name. I am still suspicious and wonder if people have got hold of personal data from lost laptops or stolen mail.
- julieEx partner just been in touch advising me the tax office are "after me urgently" and gave me this number - 08453021420 to ring - before 8pm on fri 26th - Well as I only got the message on Monday I thought I would google the number to see if indicated a department as I have no idea why I need to spk to them . Am sure if I owed the tax some money they would be writing to me or contacting me on a more up to date phone number .Surprisingly the tax office number bought up this page , so am glad I looked it up before a sleepless night worrying what I've done!! LOL . I will ring the "real" inland revenue in the morning tho just to advise them . Thanks all x
- Caller: Inland revenue
- JackI just had a call from the Inland Revenue, asking for my NI Number. As I wouldn't give any info over the phone, he gave the 08453021420 number, that I must ring before 8pm. I phoned Inland Revenue, who didn't recognize the number & said there were no flags up to say they had contacted me.On finding this page I checked out the "www.theyworkforyou" page suggested by Lee, which does say it is the tax credit number. I checked out the tax credit web page where I found a similar number, which ended in 9, which makes me think that maybe that page is part of the scam.
- Caller: Inland Revenue
- WendyJust got a call at 8.15am from a Scottish man saying he was from the Inland Revenue saying I needed to answer some security questions before he could tell me what the matter was relating to. I said that I never give out my personal details by phone and why haven't they written to me, he said they have but had no reply. I asked him what address he has on record for me he said he couldn't say!! He gave me the phone no. 0845 3021420 to call back, immediately I googled the phone number and found this link.
Beware, never give out any personal details over the phone. - BarryReceived message on answerphone saying that it was Her Majestey's Revenue and Customs calling, asking me to call urgently before 8pm on 24th July. The man leaving the message had a scottish accent. I was asked to quote my NI number as my reference when returning the call.
Rang the number out of curiosity. They asked for my NI number, which I declined to give until they proved who they were, which they couldn't. I asked if they were able to trace me in any other way, they said they could only do it via NI number. They stated they would ring again and failing that would write to me. As point of note - If you have an accountant representing you for your tax returns they would also be informed if there were any issues - JaneI have had no call but heard about this from a good friend. I have chased this link "http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2008-05-19b.200132.h", which takes you to what is possibly a copy of a real website called "They work for you", run by a charity and which lists, among other things, all the written questions and answers put by M.P.s to the government. Quite why 'Lee' would choose this as a source for verifying Tax credits phone numbers??? It seems that the page referenced by 'Lee' is a copy of a real one, the real web address of the real page is quite a bit longer. Please check the www.direct.gov.uk/ to check which phone numbers are real. Do not give out your personal information, regardless of who they say they are. If they are the real mccoy they should write first and/or . If you have had tax credits in the past you should have a genuine number on a letter. Always go by that. It is very sad when people use this frightening method to con people. Please don't be scared to tell them where to get off!!!
