Got a crackly call on my mobile claiming to be Barclays fraud protection.  This follows on from starting to receive spam on the phone yesterday so naturally cautious.  not called back or confirmed any of the details, though it had my name correct in the Automated call system.

This number is elusive.  The message informs you to press any key etc.  I had this call for my daughter and the number did not work, she immediately contacted Barclays Fraud Dept. and it appears the call is genuine as they informed her that someone had been using her DEBIT card to order goods to the sum of £709.  Fortunately, most of the purchases had not been validated, except for one about £70 which she has been told will be reimbursed.  If you get the recorded message its a good idea to phone Barclays direct - just in case!!

I called barclays and they said it wasn't one of their numbers.
it's not listed on their website either.
If they rely on automated calls for alerting me for attempted fraud, then I am FURIOUS!

Just spoke personally to barclays fraud dept and they say it's nothing to do with them.
They are looking into it and said they would never use an automated call for such matters.

We can only assume Whoever posted that it's a legit number is obviously one of the fraudsters.

If in doubt, ring the bank direct.

I received 3 calls in less than 24h from 08453512262. It´s a recorded voice saying they work for Barclay´s fraud department. But I checked my accounts and I definitely didn´t spend enough in the last week to raise suspicion (I didn´t make any purchase on internet either). It says it wants to verify my birth date and offer me 3 options of dates but none of them is actually my birthday so I hanged up thinking: if it was Barclay´s, they would obviously have my accurate birth date in records. It is definitely suspicious and I want to report it. I want this number to stop calling me!

I'vr had this number trying to ring me - wasn't sure so I rang the legitimate Barclays Fraud Department and the man on the phone told me it was a new automated service that has only rcently been introduced.  When he checked my account he said I've been frauded!  Waiting for a new debit card now.

Had call from this number claiming to be Barclays fraud and asked me to call back. Called and they told me someone in America was using my card and they had blocked it. Wasn't satisfied with this so contacted barclays direct on the number from their website, they told me the number was legit. Although somehow still not convinced. Decided I would go into my branch to sort it out. If in doubt just don't give any info out, it's not worth the worry, even if it is legit.

It is totally legit. This number called me, I initially did not trust it, so called barclays direct. They informed me my account had been subject to fraudulent activity.

Well I called Barclays directly and they had locked up my account due to me spending money remotely in Iceland.  Told them that I didn't trust the message and also that it was a very bad line which was garbling the message.  They agreed to look into this as several people had reported issues on the line.

Had a voicemail from this number, so called the bank direct and all was fine. However, later attempted to draw out cash and they'd locked my account and online banking. Spoke to fraud dept who confirmed it was them who called me, so number is legit.

Got a call from this number too.

I phoned barclays directly... i much perfer this method.. it is indeed their fraud department trying to call you.

My advice would be to phone barclays direct. Don't get into the habit of providing information you don't understand.

Had a call from this number as many have above and was very suspicious. I phoned Barclays, who after a lot of messing me around confirmed that this is the number for their automated fraud protection service and that i was ok to phone it back.

I have done this now and all was ok. I shall however be getting in touch with Barclays to let them know that this is a terrible way of getting in touch with people and goes totally against all the fraud protection advice that is given out.

But yeah, don't worry too much if this number has called you, as it is genuine.

I had a message on my answerphone today and after reading this thread I did phone the number back. It must check the number you are phoning from as it then asked me to confirm birth year, then month, then year. After that I was given a list of 5 debit card transactions from today, including i-tunes, £30 to O2, I'm with 3! and £1200 for a PC!! I pressed the button to say I knew nothing about them and was transferred to a man in the fraud dept. Someone has got my card number and was trying to use it on-line today, it was declined after the first £1.58 to i-tunes. They are now sending a new card. What a shock!

In my case the call I received from this number was from barclays due to my account being blocked, however I did not reply to it by pressing 'any key' I phoned barclays direct (from there website) on 0845 7555 555 and asked for fraud prevention, they checked the charge on my account was made by me and unblocked my account. This is a shocking way to contact people though, using automated systems with press any key etc are normally fraudulent so I didn't trust it, but Barclays confirmed this is the way they deal with fraudulent transactions and that you should reply to the automated service. I however would still recommend calling them on the number on their website.

    Call your bank ASAP!
An Answerphone message was left on my home phone today from this number saying "Message from Barclays. Press any key on your telephone keypad to continue."
The 0845 351 2262 number came up on 1471 and I found this site. So, I called Barclays DIRECTLY as I didn't trust the number and they confirmed there had been some fraudulent transactions on my account.
As others have already said, this isn't a great way for Barclays to inform their customers though!

Number is Legit, so even if you don't trust this number - GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR BANK!

I also agree its an off-putting system, not a good way to contact customers at all, but luckily for me my girlfriend works for Barclays and could confirm that they've started doing this.

Basically an automated voice reads out my full name, then confirms your dob by saying a few random year/month combinations and getting you to press a key when it gets it right, then asks you to enter the day of birth.

Still a bit suspicious, I deliberately entered the wrong day, to see what would happen and was put in a queue to speak to a real person. I hung up, re-did the process, entering the correct day, which was accepted and the system read through the last 5 transactions on my account then asks to press #1 if ok or #2 if not. Fortunately, no fraud :o)

This is indeed Barlcays fraud department. If called by this number call them back promptly. If you are uncomfy using this number, do contact your branch straight away. A fraudulent transaction was stopped on my card by Barclays as it was suspicious and a new card issued.
