I have had over 20 calls from an automated service asking to speak to someone I haven't heard of. It says it's The Halifax and gives this number to call back.  I haven't called it incase it is a scam but have spoken to The Halifax customer service department.  They said they don't recognise the number and are getting their fraud department on to it.

I have had two calls from this automated voice mail today, including one voice mail asking me to call back. They are asking for security details for an 'important reason' and they gave me a list of five birthdays to choose from. It was really rather strange.

We've had many calls (around 30) from an automated service asking us to call this number, they say that the call is for someone who sounds like 'Anthony American English'. To start with we called the number then they ask to choose a birthdate from five options, we hung up at this point.
We called Halifax who told us initially that it WAS a halifax number and they would cancel the calls through their credit department. When the calls kept coming we called the Halifax back and spoke to a different member of staff who told us it wasn't a genuine number!
We finally got BT to block marketing/malicious withheld numbers so *fingers crossed* this will work.
BT have advised anyone receiving a call like this NOT TO PRESS ANY NUMBER ON THEIR KEYPAD as it could connect you to a premium rate number (costing up to £20 a minute!)

Hmmm...I too had a call on my mobile from this number. Didn't give a company name, just asked me to call back. My account with Halifax is in order so I'll be avoiding this one I think.

i know these posts are slightly old now but i work for the halifax, the number is not one i recognise as belonging to any of our departments, but would like to know if anyone who reported it had any outcomes from reporting it? did u continue to receive calls from this number?

We keep getting calls from this number asking us for the same personal details reported here. We have had at least a dozen calls now at all sorts of times of day.  Is Halifax able to do anything to stop this?  who can I report it to?
Sometimes we get the same automated service calling us and rather than this phone number coming up it the caller ID says INTERNAT

I have reported it through to be looked at, the number itself as i stated before is not one i know of to be in use by HBOS so means it will be difficult to stop the calls at the moment, but i have passed on the details of the phone number to my manager, ill try to find out if it is a number for HBOS and will post again when i find out more

Same problem, we had numerous phone calls and messages left on our answering machine over the last two weeks. We found this was suspicious from the beginning since the Halifax don't send recorded messages.
We contacted our telephone provider and they advised to report this on the TPS (telephone preference service) website (www.tpsonline.org.uk). It takes up to 28 days for the calls to be barred from this number. Hopefully this will stop soon it's really annoying.

I work for the Halifax and after a query I got from a customer I have determined that this number (0845 355 0041) is indeed a genuine Halifax number.  It is an automated service for the credit card arrears department.  When you dial it, it identifies the number you are calling from and asks you if this is the number that we called you on.  If not it gives you the opportunity to type the correct number and then will identify you by name.  It asks a few security questions before it proceeds.  If you have any problems with dealing with your arrears in this way then ring 0870 850 1281 instead and you will get though to a person in the credit card arrears department who can both verify that an automated system tried to call you and talk to you about your arrears.  If you don't trust the fact that a random guy on a website has given you that number (and let's face it why would you) you can ring any number you have for Halifax Credit Cards and ask them to put you through to credit card arrears instead.

i just called and its automated teh whole way thro. its tells you teh o/standing amount and asks if you can pay now, or if you will be within 14days.
AHR - 8 May 2008
I phoned Halifax Credit Card and asked for the arrears department. They confirmed it was them who have bombarded me every two hours for days.

I'm disgusted at this harrassment.

They had the wrong person on the wrong number, their system has no option to speak to a human, it just bombards. I've reported them to TPS.

They're damned lucky I didn't call in the police. I was close to it. Especially after the main bank number said Halifax wouldn't ever do that and told me it sounded like something or someone trying to commit fraud. The girl in the main bank agreed with me when I said in that case, Halifax Bank ought to call the Serious Fraud Office in. She said she'd speak to her manager.

Utterly disgusting way to run a business. They should be hit with a multi-milion pound fine or shut down. I'm furious.

I have had 15 calls a day for the last three days
TW - 20 May 2008
Ive been receiving calls every hour for the last week or more, same as above.
The calls are not for me, they are for my wife who is away at the moment. Its really annoying me, as there is no way I can make them stop.
Ive rung the 0870 Halifax number to get them to stop them, they wouldnt confirm or deny it was them ringing, they said they couldnt stop the calls. The guy I spoke to was the most rude and ignorant person ever. I asked to speak to his manager, he just ignored me, and kept asking if I had a pen to take down a number that my wife should ring. He then hung up.

Ive contacted Ofcom to register a complaint.

I think any company who use this tactic of repeatadly ringing with a recorded message should be stopped from doing so by the authorities(OFCOM etc)
Its so rude, and shows a total lack of customer care.

I too have received many calls on the 08453550041 number.  I just rang 0870 850 1281.

The guy who answered asked for my long card number, I told him I didn' have one and that I got his number from my local Halifax branch and was ringing to ask for the phonecalls to stop as they were not for me (they were for the woman who used to live at this address).

He asked if for my phone number and said he would delete it from the system and I would receive no more phonecalls.  Fingers crossed it works.

- Here is a tip on how to STOP these calls getting through! :

If your phone has a 'Blacklist' program, then simply put that number into this program.  Then, when the number calls next time, automatically your phone will cancel the call even before it rings.  The person who is phoning you will just hear a dead ringing tone.

You can search online to see if you can get the program for your particular make/model of phone.

Hope this helps.

Exactly the same problem myself, I must have had 30 calls this week, never heard of this person that they are asking for and none of the options let you tell them that they have the wrong number!!

Phoned Halifax today, they didn't deny that it was them calling, and have "contacted the relevant department" to tell them to remove my number from their automated system. I also phoned BT, they said that blocking that number wouldn't work as it was a front for the number that was actually making the call. They did say that they would contact the number's provider and ask them to remove my details from their systems as well. I wasn't expecting this from BT, and have to say that it's more impressive than a simple reference number and a "we'll look into it for you".

What bugs me is that they are allowed to get away with this in the first place, and that there doesn't seem to be anywhere to report this kind of behaviour. The Information Commissioner's Office told me that they only deal with automated marketing calls and as they weren't trying to sell me anything I should contact Consumer Direct. They just told me to call BT and the Halifax to try to stop the calls. Nobody seems interrested in stopping them from doing this to other people as well!!

Same as everyone here!! I have had numerous calls from this number with an automated service from Halifax.  Under law this can be classed as harrassment and should be reported to the Police.  over the last 2 days I have probably received 25-30 calls.  my wife is in the last stages of pregnancy and I'm waiting for an important phonecall, I don't want to be answering calls from a bloody machine
