From Co-operative Bank about late credit card payments - puts you on to an automated system that takes some details and puts you through to a person to take payments.

Automated call purportedly from co-op bank asking for someone in this household and asking to press a button to continue. Hung up.

Had 2 calls previous to this exactly the same, but with the number withheld. I'd say it could be a scam and have read stuff about similar methods of information extraction such as this - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5187518.stm

If the bank want to speak to us, get a human to do it, or write us a letter.

Total now 3 calls. Bank already has the information that the call asks for , therefore call is probably a scam, if you follow the instruction to press any key to listen further you will possibly be patched through to a premium rate number somewhere in Belize etc.(last I heard one at £15 flat rate charge). Do not touch any key , just put phone back on cradle.

Automated call, asked for date of birth.  Hung up, called back via a number I got from the Cooperative Bank website.  Ascertained that call was actually genuine and dealt with the problem

The Cooperative Bank should take note that using a "scam style" system to call their customers is not a good idea, particularly when advice should be to never give out information to someone who has phoned you.

Advice: Treat it as a hint that your bank wants to talk to you.  Hang up, call Cooperative Bank Customer Services on a number that YOU CHOOSE, advise them that you have received an automated call, then they can then find you the right person to talk to.

It does seem to be genuinly from Co-Op Bank Visa card reminder of late payment and asking if payment had or when would be sent to avoid further charges. Can only say in my own case this was correct. 1 call per day received for a week , when returned call was then taken through the automated system until advised of late payment. They were correct as we had a local postal strike. I do not like these automated systems but at the days end they were right and at least I found out the payment I had genuinly sent in time had been delayed by the post thus avoiding late payment fee.

Apparently this is the co-op. I phoned them and asked what was going on and they said it's an automated system that phones you when you are in arrears on your credit card. The operator agreed with me that she would also refuse to confirm any details to an automated system, and that I was by no means the first to ask what the hell was going on!
She said she would pass on my feedback...

    Scammed one
Have had two calls in two consecutive days - did 1471 I get 08453550305
    - when I rang the number it wasn't the Co-Op it was some betting company called 'I-WeB' or something. Basically, they denied all knowledge of any automated calling or any association with the Co-OP

I have been getting calls from this number every hour during the week, when I accept the call, there is a pre-recorded message that plays, if I reject the call it leaves a voice mail on my phone. Any ideas who I should call to getthis stopped?

Calls every few hours - Coop bank. I AM overdue, so it is probably genuine - but that could be just a coincidence. The system asks for personal details. I have had calls like this from real people too. If they ask for personal details I always refuse - it is classic "human engineering" technique used by hackers, so you should never ever give them info like date of birth, etc, unless you have called them on a number you know for sure is genuine.

I went through the system, got a human being to speak to, asked them to verify who they were ... their address, cell phone number, the number of letters in their mothers maiden name ... and they hung up on me!!!

I received 3 calls from this number today, checked in google and found this site...
I'm with Smile Bank which is owned by CoOp Bank so I logged in online and found I was actually in arrears on my card (their mistake!!)

If you're getting calls every hour, I'd suggest you pay off your credit card or find out who registered a credit card in your name or using your mobile number...

I took a call on this number purporting to be from the Co-op bank,
asking for my wife, and asking me to press a button. I was busy, she was busy, I knew she didn't bank with Co-op, it sounded too much like a scam, and I put the phone down. Why don't they get a human to do this, then I'd have discovered that the call may have been genuine.

    cheesed off!
this number has been ringing me every day even though i dont have a co op bank account, i have only just had a phone line installed and only been in my house about 2 weeks, so how did they get a new number? and why do they keep calling? when i press a button to speak to someone it does nothing as i dont have any account information to give to them!

The number has called my mobile several days in a row leaving empty voice mail messages. I returned the call once and was contacted to an automated system saying it was from the Co-op and asking to confirm security details. I do have a Co-op account so I rang them, they said it was not them calling. I rang O2 who agreed to remove any charge on my account due to the scam call. I called the 08453550305 from my work phone - it first asked for a phone number. I gave them my mobile number and it found my name in its database. It asked for my date of birth - I gave them a fake one and it identified it as incorrect. After two fake dates of birth it said it would connect me to an operator. I waited on the automated system for a while then hung up. Has anyone tried entering their real date of birth? Is the scam that they have your real date of birth and go on to ask for more security details or is it that they just reject any date of birth and just try to get you to hang on?

More importantly, how can we stop this???

After receiving 32 calls over 5 days for a £5 due amount I called the Co-Operative Head Office in Manchester to complain to the Chief Executive. I spoke with his assistant. I received a call back within 5 minutes and my number was removed from the automated system. Call 0161 837 8769 and ask for the Chief Executives Office.

To the wise guy who said you should 'pay your bill' above, I AM NOT A: A MAN....B: PETER NICHOLSON C: A CUSTOMER OF THE CO-OPERATIVE BANK!!!

Cram that in your sarcasm pipe mister!
