Calls about 3-5 times a day.  If I answer there it just beeps at me and then leaves a message of beeping.  If I don't answer at all someone leaves a message just saying hello a dozen times.

    Windows MTCE Scam

For those that don’t know, this scam involves fraudsters cold calling people, claiming to be a Windows support tech and getting the victim to give them remote access to their PCs in the guise of helping them ‘cleanse’ their systems for a fee ($$$).

The ploy is to ask the victims to look at the event viewer on their PC which invariably has plenty of rather worrying (but totally harmless) warnings and alerts.

The victim is then told that these harmless warnings show that their PC is infested with viruses and that they are in deep trouble.

Once the seeds of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) are well sown, the fraudsters persuade the victim to let them access their PC.  They do this using the perfectly legitimate logmein123.com service to logon to the victim’s PC, with the victim’s agreement.

They then ‘cleanse’ the PC running some bogus software which does nothing in the way of cleansing the PC and frequently, they logoff without leaving anything more than the logmein123.com client behind.

Recently however, reports are coming in that some fraudsters seem to be leaving behind evidence that work was done by another, legitimate company.

The issues to remember here is that Microsoft does not monitor all the PC’s in the World looking for ones generating signs of infection so if someone rings up suggesting that they are from or work on behalf of Microsoft, you can rely on it being a hoax.

They called tried to pull that on me.  I asked how she knew my computer was messed up?  Sir, we are monitoring it now!  I just laughed, well, I'm looking at it now and my anti-virus shows nothing.  But sir!  Your computer is in trouble!  I replied, but I don't have a computer!  She hung up. Damn it, I was having fun.  I tried to call back, got one of those - The number you're trying to call is an invalid number.  Crap!  I wanted to have some fun harassing them back.

Yeah, I got the call today 12/22/2012 I'm an IT Administrator so when I got the call I'm like Brian I wanted to take this call to the full extreme and mess with them. Anyone who knows anything knows Microsoft will not call you about your personal system asking questions about your system being unstable and sending reports to their Datacenter. Hilarious, So I told them that I wasn't at home and that I would tell my daughter to turn off my system untill I could get back. They told me that I needed to make some changes and they would walk me through it and would I be home by 5'oclock CST, I said yes. Waiting to see if the idiots are going to call me back. They started by asking for me by my first name, instead of my last name that also threw up a flag. If they call me back I'm going to take them for a long convoluted confusing ride. they will give on me before I give up jerking their chain. LOL Please scammers call me back. paranoia is just a heightened sense of awareness. have a great Holiday people.

I like to answer and tell them I'm glad they called, because I am looking for a window cleaner.  Inform them they must have been reading my mind, cause my house windows are very dirty and really need them cleaned.  It takes them a min. or 2 to finally hang up, but the satisfaction of pissing them off really makes my day.  Always like to [***] frauds and sales people.  Try it some time, you'll really get some satisfaction, plus I bet it makes your day a litlle more enjoyable.  Just use a little imagination and take them for what you can.
