My cell keeps getting calls from 1233378555. When you answer it just hangs up

A phone call from 1233378555 came to my home phone few minutes back. My son picked up and heard that some one telling that our computer windows has some virus. What is it?

not sure if the number is alwase the same, but just got off the phone with this one. had the conversation several times before. south asian guy calling form "windows" telling me about a virus or impending system crash. i lead them on for a while then tell them i have a mac. at this point, they call you a stupid person or stupid fool or stupic idiot, then hang up on you.

I keep getting these calls early in the morning. The say my computer has a problem. I say no and hang up.

This person calls and tells me my computer has a virus.  My dad is a computer engineer and checks my computers frequently.  He then asked me for my father's name.  I hate calls like this.

Don't ever give out information to these loosers. Windows or Microsoft never call you about a virus on your computer.

Just called me, 9:40 am ... no one there

The same people call and when I told them there was nothing wrong he cuss me out and hang up onme

I told them that their system had made many nuisance-silent calls to me over the last two weeks and they told me that they would take me off their system.  

I asked for the company name and they at first stated that it was "Service Windows Systems" and I said no in wasn't, she then said "Technical Services Ltd" (who knows if that it true!), anyway I then asked where the company was registered they hun up.

I would assume that they are just another example of some dodgey foreign company using a rubbish telesales computer system that is ringing out numbers faster than their operatives can handle the calls.  

Annoying!

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

i got a call sying it was windows calling and i happened to have whistle handy and the last thing i herdwas a kinda scream too funny  hope he phones again so i can laugh againi  i have whistle by yhe phone for all scam or un wanted sales .buy a whistle and you can laugh along instead of swearing when crap calls happen.blow whistle and smile

Got call on home phone around noon PT.  Couldn't hear anything except some grunts and no anwer when I asked, several times who is calling, so I hung up.  Ha, I too have a whistle by the phone in case someone harrasses me or does not stop calling.  I use Apple, have a laptop with Windows which I have not used in months, no need for it.  Besides that, updates for Microsoft always come in anyway, on both computers.  I have used computers for well over 25 years and do my own tech work.  I often know more that any techie I ever tried to use, so depend on myself to be logical and check things out.  I'd hate the whistle blown in my ear, can damage ear drums, but I warn them first I will do it next time they call; they never call back.

Hi all - One day in June 2012, I JUST happened to be having trouble with my computer and internet when this person called.  He said he was able to detect my internet issues since he was with MICROSOFT, but I had to sign on to this AAMYY.com for him to access the internal part of my computer. Yes,I FELL for the scam even though I asked many, many correct and good questions - the reply was Maa'm (with rapid fire response answers) with the heavy accent for over 30 minutes.....They were gonna give me $100 worth of laptop checks through the year, but I had to send my money via WESTERN UNION to a Jennifer Smith who is related to MICROSOFT.  I saw where the charge was going to INDIA...he said Maa'm don't worry I will change the destination & proceeded to help me create a Western Union password and so on. There is so much more that happened....short of it supposedly someone helped reload my ADOBE and checked my computer which did run better after - but I called the number back that he gave me NOTHING!  I called my Chase Visa right away - they saw the charge already came through and I had to deal with the Fraud department.  New number and reverse of charges - Now I have seen them trying to call me several times....today I finally answered the fone.....HE has been trying to reach me - my excuse "I have a job and don't know my hours'......and he asks if the number on the charge card still works(?) odd question....I told him I reported the company as Fraud.......he tells me the new fone number since they have been in number changes - try this one (786) 231 - 3770 - the auto dialer is a different one with (1)23-3378555.  Oh, yah - i am supposedly to get back DOUBLE the money back that was charged - will I provide the charge card number for that?

Something about 0% interest rate credit cards.

i am having calls from this  number several times a day but as it was a strange number i have never answered it  thank goodness i have caller ID

So glad I did not fall for this one.  I was sleeping in and too groggy to look at number when the phone rang, I got the spiel about it was Microsoft.  The fellow had my name which is a little disconcerting, and I am at my winter home so I do not know which house he called, as the phones are forwarded.

I told him my husband did on the computer things and was not home (I was pretty sure at this point this was a scam so was not about to cooperate but wanted to get more info if possible)...anyway I asked him to explain more to me about what the problem was ....(he had said initially microsoft was getting a strange signal from my computer and they wanted to check on it...that is when the lightbulb went off cluing me that this was a scam, and why I tried to get more info from them)...

So I asked the fellow (who had a heavy Indian type accent) to explain to me what the problem was.  First he said  please turn your computer, then he said a second later is your computer on?  I said no.  He again tried to get me to turn on my computer.

Then I said look, I don't know who you are and I am not turning on my computer, give me your telephone number and I will check on it and call you back.  Then they terminated the call.  

When I realized (after coffee LOL) that I could check caller ID, I recognized the number as one which has called many times and I never answer.  

I am glad that even being woken from a dead sleep, I had enough sense not to give out any info and not turn on my computer (I was concerned if I did that that they could be watching it and somehow accessing it--puter techy I am not ) ...

Unfortunately too many people will probably fall for this before they check a webste like this.  I LOVE this site and use it often to check on what I suspect are bogus calls, even ones I don't answer (had I been awake I never would have answered the telephone) Too bad lots of folks fal for things and don't check this site first.

I highly recommend folks have caller ID so they can spot bogus calls...my next step?  I am going to report this to the "do not call  website"and file a complaint. Often when I do this for some company calling over and over, suddenly the calls stop.  Don't know if it will do any good, but I'll give it a shot.

BEWARE folks, anything sounds the least bit out of whack, ask for a phone number to call them back...usuallly anyone calling for a bogus reason will hang up.  

and as posted above, Microsoft or "windows" would never call you...That waas my first clue :-).
