Called tonight at 8pm (outside office hours) claiming to be the Australian Taxation Office. Left message saying I would need to ring back with my tax file number. Seems like it could be an identity theft scam. The phone number left is not listed on the Australian Tax Office site.

Called at 6.05 pm very unsure person didn't seem to know what they were takling about - want tax details etc. claim to be from the tax office seems very suspicious to me

Also got a call from 1300852232 sounded dodgy to me also.

Rang me too at my work number on a Saturday and left a message. I never give out details over the phone anyway if somebody calls me, and it seems that I definitely won't be returning this call.

I got a call today - ANZAC day.  The guy said they are working overtime due to system problems, yada yada...

He wanted me to confirm my date of birth and it immediately set the alarm bells ringing.  He said he needed to talk to me about superannuation.  Told him if it was important they could send me a letter, then he gave me this number to call back on when I wanted.

Sounds a bit shifty to me

On Anzac day a voice message was left by a caller purporting to be from the Australian Tax Office, asking me to call 1300 85 22 32.  I called next morning to find this a bona fide ATO number, after identifying myself I was advised about some lost superannuation accounts that had been added to the ATO Lost Super registry. All is good. Peace

I work for the ATO on this campaigne. Yes we work weeknights, yes we work overtime - including public holidays.

You don't need to panic!

The ATO has a huge backlog of calls to make regarding superannuation. You can request a letter be sent on the tax office letter head requesting that you contact them if that makes you more sure of it.

if you do call the number, you'll speak to someone at the tax office - that is verified by hearing the official message.

It's worth a call!

I to got a voicemail at 8:30pm and have sent an email to the ATO to find out if its a scam as per the website email address of ReportEmailFraud@ato.gov.au

1300852232 claiming to be the tax office.
They just rang me today 11 may 2010 at about 10:25am Canberra time. They wanted to talk to my wife about passing on some information to her. It all sounded a little odd so here I am checking if its a scam or not.

This is a completely legitimate phone call.  If anything, the tax office is doing you a favour helping you track down your lost super.  Certainly worked for me, money is better in my pocket than being lost forever.

Have been called twice by this number saying their from the ATO both times has been on the weekends.  Very weird that it's never on weekdays!!!!!

I too am very suspicious. I have had a call twice with a message left to call this number, both times being on a sunday. I called the number back on monday and they asked for my tax file number, I said I wasnt providing that to them over the phone and I would go down another avenue. I then rang the ATO direct and they couldnt locate anything on my file for the reason of the call. Seems a bit wierd!!!

Or if known that it is about the lost super, then I better use the super seeker?

People - when reading some of the posts on this forum, please please please use all possible skepticism. ESPECIALLY the ones from people claiming to work for the ATO and who are assuring you that all is well. Anyone can say anything on this forum, and claim they are anyone.

Do you really think ATO employees monitor forums like this to assure people that all is well? Much more likely that scam sites monitor forums like this and post bogus messages to make people think they're ATO.

By all means go through the proper channels with ATO and see if you have lost super. But most important of all - consider never answering calls from private numbers. If they're too rude to identify themselves when calling, why should you be polite enough to answer?

same deal, same phone number. I called ATO directly with the known phone numbers off the website the next day and asked about any things they were doing, I had notes on my accoutn stating they had tried and it is a thing they are doing at the moment. it was all legit (for me).

asked to speak to chritopher and i said i wasnt happy to talk to them which they said was fine and gave me this number to ring back.also it was on the queens birthday monday public holiday

Just call the superanuation number on the ato website and they will confirm that this is legit

I just called the ATO on 131020 (number on their website) and they confirmed that 1300852232 is an outbound team calling to inform people about lost super. It is a legit number but for peace of mind call the ATO as I could just be an identity theft also.

i also got a phone call at work saying they're from the tax office, they gave me their name and said i could call back on this 1300 number. they said my super fund had registered me as a lost member and to contact them. i went to log into super account and my details didn't match/work. I finally got access to my details, which were old phone numbers, yet postal address is still the same, but they had marked me as a lost member. so it all seems very legit to me, but we need to be particularlary cautious when giving any personal information, when you dont know the person on the other end.
