My mother got a call from a "Larry Balin" (or "Balion", perhaps) who said he was with Reader's Digest. He told her he was a lawyer who was notifying her that she won $600,000. but to send the money to her, he would need her to send him an insurance check in the amount of 1% of the winnings($6000). He then tried to get her to give her bank account details to him so that he could supposedly arrange her $6000 payment which would then allow him to transfer the $600,000 in prize money to her (yeah, right!).

She tried to ask him for his address to see if he'd give it out. He put her on hold to "ask his secretary" to confirm her address - but then immediately told her that his secretary was out of the office. When my mother said that he'd have to speak to her son, he got very defensive and said that as a lawyer, he would not be allowed to talk to anyone except the official named winner of the prize -- so there was "no use having your son call me".

Got a call from someone calling himself Ben Taylor and he was happy to report to me that I had been selected to receive a $7000 grant.  He could not give me a name for the grant other than a US Treasury grant.  Stated that for me to receive it I have to send by Western Union $120. In checking this out by calling the FBI and the US Treasury office to verify this information I was told by both offices that this is a scam. They said they have been receiving calls in the last week or so about this same scam. When asked to talk to Mr Taylors supervisior I was given another male by the name of Justin Long.  Both men are foreigners and can not give any information that I could validate.  They said they were in the  building at 200 Independence Ave in Washington DC and when you do a google search it takes you to the HHS building that is full of doctors.  When I asked them for another business that was in that building they are reporting they are in so I could call and make sure this was on the up and up they could not name another business.  There has to be a way to stop this but from I was told by the Treasury office that there are to many for them to stop.  When you do a phone check it states that it is a land line.

They all had indian accents. Very strong. I asked to speak to someone from the united states and they got offended. Tried to say I was getting
A 7000 grant all. They needed my credit card
Number from my bank account and they would
Deposit the funds into my account. The catch was
I had to go down to the nearest western union and send a money gram to
    Some third world country.

A foreigner called and said I had won $7,000 in grant money and that he needed to verify some information.
Naturally, he said that there are scams out there and I must be very careful because he is from the A1 department. He asked me where I would like the funds wire to from the US Government (which does not work at 7PM at night), and I gave him an account I have that is no longer viable (it could accept funds but there are no funds in the account). Then he said that I had to write down my approval number (after asking me if I was single, verifying my address, verifying my phone number and then asking me to give him my number that he just gave me, lmbo) and asked if I had a child. After giving me my approval number, he asked me to call Ben Taylor at 202-391-0961 to collect my funds, which would be wired directly into my bank account.
This is about the 7th scam call I have gotten like this in one week. The government cannot do anything about it as they are legally purchasing numbers here in the states (as many legit businesses do) and they cannot prosecute someone who is living in India.
One guy actually admitted he was scamming people in the USA, that he was in India and said that I was so good on the phone, he would like for me to work with his company; he could make me very rich. I told him that I was not into stealing other people's money and asked him if he was Hindu. He said "Yes," but there are Christians and people of all religions who commit sins and he is not proud but he really likes the money. He said that he has to make a living somehow and it is very hard to find work in India.
