Called and left a message in an accent so strong you couldn't even make out what he was saying.  When he said who the message was for, it was garbled, and said it was the IRS.  Very bizarre.

They said on mine it was the IRS, but the name they said who it was for was very garbled, and I couldn't understand the message through his accent.. seems very shady.

Enrolled Agent before IRS replies to vkmn
I received this call on my message line.  It was incomplete because of my outgoing message but said they were Internal Revenue Service, gave this phone number, advised it was the hotline to their division and to not ignore this call and to call back before they take legal (first time I heard was action, 2nd - 4th time I listened it was legal obligation) action or obligation against me.  Then number was repeated and the closing was "Goodbye and take care."

I am an Enrolled Agent, enrolled to practice before the IRS and my actions are accountable to the IRS, and I know this is not how the Internal Revenue Service operates.

If there is a problem with the IRS, and they believe you owe them money, their contact is always, ALWAYS in writing, and there are usually several notices sent before they take action.  They also tell you in subsequent written communications, if you have been ignoring the written notices, what actions they will take next and when.

I responded to one of the messages previously noted, however, I do want to let you know the governmental website that handles phishing (email) and phone scams.

IRS is part of the Treasury Department.  Within the past few years, actions on the IRS side are primarily civil in nature.  For criminal matters any actions revert to the Treasury Department.

You want to contact TIGTA.gov.  This is the U. S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
