    I just recieved a call from this number.  A machine told me the call is meant for me and for me to hold and I will be transfered to the next operator.  I thought it was kinda stupid to call someone just to put them on hold.  I tried calling the number back and it rang then I heard holding music I just hung up.  I googled the number and all I got is that its a Alabama land number.

    I got two calls from this number (205) 453-4750.  When I called back, I was on hold with some music playing for a few minutes.  After that a prompt said:  thank you for calling Capital Account.

    Just got a call from this # on my cell phone.  Got a recording that stated the message was intended for me and to call back, when I entered the number in  reverse phone from Intellus it indicates it is a number from Birmingham, AL

    I think it is from a bill collector.

    yea these are bill collectors  But how rude calling at 8:30 am.looking for my wife but wouldnt give me any info on why they called.

    This is a HUGE SCAM! They will say anything to get you to wire them money. I have had people from this number call me saying that I never paid my entire school loan back (which is weird, because I don't have any school loans). They called back a second time saying that I owe money for a pay-day loan I took out. ODD.. I never took one out...

    YEP!!! IT'S A HUGE SCAM. I CALLED MY PROVIDER AND HAD THEM BLOCKED FROM EVER CALLING ME.

    I have learned never to answer a no. I don't recognize, especially from an area code I don't know.  If it is important and above board, they can leave me a message.  This no. did not.

    I called this number they would not give me any info of who they are, right after calling them I received a call from NCU Financial twice who buy up written off debt for pennies and try to collect which is a scam.

    I don't answer my phone when it's a number I don't know. Glad i didn't pick up. They didn't leave a voicemail either. Very strange.

    i got a call i answered no one said any thing so i called back and a lady answered,told me to hold and never came back to the phone. thia is the 7th time they have called me

    They call every once in a while, sometimes leaving a msg (which gets cut off) sometimes not. I NEVER return it because they never leave a working number.

    These people are calling from PORTFOLIO RECOVERY SERVICES. This is a collection agency that purchase written off accounts from various creditors. One of their largest clients is Capitol One.

    I work at the Citibank facility for Cards Customer Service and Collections Department. I see the "behind-the-scenes" of what actually goes on. I am impressed with how Citibank actually WANTS to work WITH you to help pay your debt.
    But, once your account has gotten sold to one of the collection agencies, those agencies are notorious for breaking standards, rules and laws (both State and Federal) while trying to get your money.
    I work closely with Citibank's auditors whose sole job is to ensure these agencies operate within legal and ethical guidelines, as Citibank doesn't want their name associated with the sleezy agencies.
    However, they can not monitor EVERY call these agencies make. This is why most creditors and banks have Auditors that do frequent checks and random monitors of these agencies.

    If PORTFOLIO RECOVERY SERVICES is operating outside of the law and outside of ethical practices, feel free to contact the creditor's/bank's Auditing Team to file a complaint.

    That's going the very, extra mile.
    Otherwise, continue to inform others on these forums. Continue to file complaints with the FCC, FTC and the BBB.

    Collecting debts is far from a "Gentleman's" game but if these Agencies continue to operate like this, it is up to us make stand against practices such as those used by PORTFOLIO RECOVERY SERVICES.

    I find it odd that I receive these call hang ups on my cell phone when I am engaged with a live person on my landlline.

    My phone is a PAY AS YOU GO phone.

    I always think it is someone important who is calling me and I cannot read the numbers on my phone, so I answer.

    Oh - it is Portfolio Recovery Associates.  They call and hang up on my cell phone.  They use multiple phone numbers but never identify themselves.

    Their phone number is NOT listed on the Internet or with a public directory, so an individual like me is compelled to call the phone number on the land.  

    In the Past, I issued a Cease and Desist Order against them for calling a completely non-discretionary emergency phone only.
    In other words, their harassment is something I have to pay for, so they must stop.

    That number is from Portfolio Recovery services.  They have several telephone numbers from several different states and I get a call from them at least once a week.  I had an account that was witten off by the credit provider over four years ago and not legal action was taken to collect the debt.  Due to the amount of time since the last activity on the account, nothing legal can be done to collect and I am finacally challenged and cannot do anything regarding payments and I do not expect for a change in my financial situation.  I have explained this to the collectors but to no avail.  I am going to contact the FTC to see if their practice will qualify for a harrassment complaint.
