- chicka| 3 repliesits portfolio recovery, its a collection agency, they don't have license to legally charge in a lot of states. Call a free or your current lawyers office and ask for advice on the issue. If you don't owe debt, they can handle them very fast. If you do owe they can help you with paperwork to get rid of them. They use your address and number the 3 credit checks use to keep track of you and your credit, so changing your number or address won't help unless you take action to get rid of them. They also uses means that are frowned upon by the court system, making it fairly easy to get a judge to dismiss the case. They have many numbers and it will say a variety of different state area codes on caller id, but all of them transfer you to the collection agency main place. don't talk to them, just talk to a lawyer.

- TerminallyIll replies to chicka| 1 replyThank you for your detailed reply. My case was a ID theft from 1999 dismissed from court and I just found out they took it to court without my knowledge and another judge in another county let them put a lean on my home. How can they do that? Why should I be the one to keep paying lawyers when my husband is terminally ill and we can't even afford to eat.

- JesIs not that they're like many other low life debt collectors out there, these guys actually are among the more professional debt collectors - hard to believe, isn't it? However because they buy leads and debt in bulk, they acquire old and statute expired debt, right along with legitimate ones. Unfortunately is not going to help their bottom line to try to figure which is which, so they go after all of them. It gets nasty when they work an account for a while and there is no pay off. At that point for all their grand standings, their agents act no different that any other low life debt collector. And no - they will not listen to any arguments about the debt is old, paid off, or not your. All they want is some money (10 to 30 cents on the dollar) so they can get the supervisors off their back and maybe get a bonus. This company is a big one so they know how to get around federal rules. If you want to get them off of you, go through your state's authorities.

- Cherylmost times when these people call they are trying to collect a debt that has been written off for 20 years. they tried to get me to pay a bill from 1992. i quickly told them they had no right to try and collect on this debt. anything over 10 years is done and gone. according to the fair debt collection act anyway. i just block them for now.

- GaryI don't answer. I owe no debts. I am getting a call a day from different numbers.
- SueA** Holes need to be shut down. I received a call from this number after 9PM on a Sunday! I did not answer, and no message was left! I don't know why they are calling me! I owe no debts and I wish that the DOJ would focus on scammers like this! Reporting to every official office I can find!

- Senior CitizensThey are not acutually looking for a specific person that owes money. They are looking for anyone foolish enough to send them money. Also they troll these sites looking for innocent people to dupe out of money. If anybody reading this gets the urge to send them any money. Our advice is to flush your money down the toilet before you send it to those scam artists. If they could collect money from you they would not be calling you.
- PazuzuThank you for your input. I do not answer unknown numbers and neither should you. Instead I check to read what you have to say about these phone numbers. They definitely have one thing in common . . . they never leave a message. You input is greatly appreciated.
- MichaelMy phone is programmed not to answer any number not in my contacts list. I'm often asked "what if it's someone trying to reach you in an emergency?"
My reply is "that's what voicemail is for!"
These slime balls actually threatened a friend with arrest. Not legal, of course. And they RECENTLY tried to get me to pay on a Radio Shack debt that was discharged in a Chapter 7 over 20 years ago.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery

- Mary| 1 replyReceived yet another call from this "so called collection agency". They never leave a message. I am not in the habit of answering unknown callers or area codes i am unfamiliar with. Didnt answer this time. Just googled the number and found your information. They not only call me but send me collection letters as well. The one they are trying to collect on was written off awhile back and is from 2002. No long viable to be collected on. If they think i am going to pay it they have another thing coming. Just saying. These [***] need to stop calling all times of the day and night and stop harrassing people. Its totally beyond reasonable.

- Anna| 1 replythey put papers on my front porch not even in an envelope saying I had been sued for a debt many years ago. It almost looks like a court document. What should I do?
- Caller: Portfolio recovery
- Roger replies to AnnaDo nothing. Court papers are not "left on a porch"; they are served to you by an agency as hired by the court. DO NOT RESPOND and contact the county where the "court" is located and verify the case number, any other docket info, etc. through the county. Occasionally the court may "serve you" via certified, registered mail. Otherwise, the "papers" left on your porch may be fraudlent and merely a device to frighten you into responding to them - of course to the collection agency.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND DO NOT RESPOND UNTIL FULLY SATISFIED WITH THE VALIDITY OF THE "PAPERS". IF IN DOUBT, CONTACT AN ATTORNEY AND OBTAIN A SHORT CONSULTATION.
Best of Luck,
Roger - PJC - IOWA replies to chickaThanks for this information.
- ginny replies to TerminallyIllThis is a very late reply, but yes they can do that. But you would have needed to be served. Were you ever served with any kind of court papers? This is where those court papers get tricky: they are often not for an actual appearance date, but what they are asking for is an "answer" If you fail to file the "answer" (answer is your defense/dispute in writing) with the court system in the number of required days (varies from state to state) the petitioner will automatically win award by default. If you were never served any papers you can take them back to court and request proof of being served. If they can not provide the proof you have some recourse. I hope you already got this figured out by now, but if not good luck.
