Phila PA on caller ID.....left no message on answering machine

It was a debt collector Convergent Outstourcing Inc when I answered only to be instantly put on hold a recording plays while you are on hold, "Hello, please hold for the first available representative. It is important that we speak with you. We will be with you shortly."  Trying to collect on debt for 20 years ago and would not listen and I told him to cease and desist

they called me also with the same thing. but this was paid many year ago and is no longer on my credit report which is now clear of everyone but they are calling everyday to collect this debt that do no longer on any report. when told to verify the account and that I owe this . they said you do owe this and we want payment. when I told them to give the original creditor they refused and said make payment today. I told them to stop calling me but they still call. I am on the do not call list and will be suing them in a short time if they do not stop calling

This is a new one for us...Convergent.  But we gave up answering the phone 3yrs ago when we moved into our current home.  If it was a legit company they would leave a message or contact us by registered mail.  Bills are paid & other than mortgage we have no loans.  So keep calling....

They keep harassing me and I have no debt. They won't leave a message if I do not answer.

They are calling me looking for a family member. This is bull to be harassed over someone else's debt.

Calls each day. Say's her name is Kelly Smith. I hang up sine I don't talk to machines.

Keeps calling at all hours

.If it is a shady bill collector, jerks are calling day and night, 2 yrs after this should have been settled! Even after getting new unlisted landline! I have EXCELLENT credit, nothing that should need collected, but am afraid to answer phone.
                        Here are my questions:
     1. Does anyone know how to legally stop them, and/or sue them?
      2.  is it legally true, that if there is an unpaid bill (& I don't know if the Doctor's choice co-op ever paid the lab--see my story below)
            ...if there is an unpaid bill, and you answer the phone, the 2 yrs statute of limitations is thrown out, and clock starts all over again?
             FYI, that saved me: I read to call the provider directly--DON'T try to deal with collections yourself! (all these poor seniors who don't
             know this!)
       3. I realize that most times these so called "collection agencies" are doing illegal things to get $$$$ (with interest!), but who can make
           them pay and/or shut them down???
( I paid my Functional Medicine Dr., for some out-of-pocket lab tests he ordered...Dr. paid Doctor's Choice Co-op. We both have our receipts!- Yet the lab bill never got paid. So, one young girl sent the collection agency after me. But then an older more seasoned  Billing rep called the collection agency to tell them who to call. The lab had to call the collection agency 3 more times, over the next 10 months, before they quit calling me!! )

Jeff, how do you sue these shady credit collectors? I won't answer phone, b/c I read if you do, the 2 yr statute of limitations on the bill runs out, and the clock starts ticking all over again!!!! :( It could be something medical that you had no idea didn't get paid, and they bought into that debt. It's true that if they were ligit, you would have gotten a notice in mail, but I believe they can get $$$$ going through this loophole in the law.
  FYI that kinda saved me when it wasn't me responsible for a bill- but a 3rd party may have left bill unpaid--call the provider directly. I called the lab, they told the Collection agency who to call and to stop calling me. But they called off and on the 1st year, and now 3 yrs later and a new unlisted phone #, they found me again?
