This number rang my mobile today, the +27 prefix is the country code for South Africa.

Forgot to say it sometimes comes up on my mobile without the +27 44 prefix, appearing as an 0800 number which you could be forgiven for calling back thinking it was free!

I had the same today, did you find out who this was? :)

I believe they are a company claiming to work for and on behalf of Microsoft. They then tell you that there have been a serious number of error messages coming up via the computer. They ask you to log in and then they upload a program on to the computer which highlights several hundred errors and viruses. In the meantime they "clean" the computer and then tell you that for a small annual fee this can be done automatically. The cost is around £200. The problem is that they now have all the details they need to enter your machine at will - especially if you do not agree to their bargain. I allowed them to run this process as I was getting rid of that particular computer the following day - I am still getting calls from them. Last time I challenged that they had absolutely no contact whatsoever with Microsoft - and kept the poor bloke on the phone for a while during which i contacted a mate at Microsoft, Redmond who told me categorically that they were a scam. The guy hung up - I was surprised to get another call this morning, this time from a South African number.  The previous guy was actually calling from Mumbai although he originally said he was speaking from an office in London; an office that is owned by another contact of mine who sells the address to call centres around the globe! My recommendation is to ask them for as much detail as possible and then ask them to call back at a later time. Then contact Microsoft direct and arm yourself with answers from them. Make sure your virus software is up to date and don't allow anyone unless you know their parents, grandparents and social security number, to download anything remotely to your computer. Definately don't call them back as they are premium rated (note the number - disconcertingly they have included the 44 which is the international dialling code for the UK and 800 which is an internationally recognised free phone number!).

so im not the only one with these calls, starting from today i had 4 missed calls due to my phone being on silent, i had no idea this would be a scam, the number 0800 does seem to make you believe its a professional company etc but then i had +2744 continued by the number, wonder how long this has been going on for, seems relatively new?

Figured it was a scam number, the only way i can think they got my number is i put an advert on ebay last week and included my number in the ad. It's the only place i have ever had my number where it could be obtained, as i never give it out.

Me too, just had call, thought number looked suspicious so left well alone. Thanks to feedback from others, now know I did the right thing.

scam - claimed they were from a market research company. brother lives out in SA so i answered thinking it was him. DON'T CALL BACK.

i have had various missed calls from this number since last week. i have also has a simular number but starting with 0800. i have not answered it and im glad ive not know.

This number just called my mobile- i'm at work so phone is on silent it only called for about two rings then cut off! from what i've read here I won't bother if they call again either!

im getting these calls as well but id like to know how on earth they have my number as i dont give my number out unless needed but im glad im not the only one getting them

they called me first saying that it is a survey and then was starting to try to sell me a line rental and broadband from talk talk. as i was suspicious of the number i then said i was not interested and as the women on the phone didn't seem to get the idea i hung up.

Got this phone call today. Luckily googled the number and found all this info.

I missed a call from this number, I tried calling back.  but number has been busy, glad I saw this post
