- Anu SoodHere is a recap of the events of last Thursday, July 12, as related to the unauthorized Dish charge of $671.42 on that day (all times are local PST):
11:17 AM - I received a call from "Ajay" who claimed he was from Dish Network. The caller ID indicated that he was calling from Dish Network, 800/333-3474. I told him we are on the do not call registry and hung up.
11:18 AM - Ajay called again and explained that he was not trying to sell anything, that the call was to address a potential service problem with my Dish account. He explained that Dish was reorienting the oribitals of various satellites, and that this could affect my Dish signal within a few weeks. He stated that Dish may need to replace my receiver and that he needed to verify some information regarding my current receiver.
Concurrently, I tried to log in to my Dish on-line account, but it appears that the password had changed -- I had to log in using my 4-digit PIN. After he stated my receiver model and service/email addresses, I felt comfortable that this was a legitimate call. He asked me to turn on my TV and read a number from the diagnostic menu. Once this was verified with his records, he told me that a replacement receiver would be mailed to me in 4-5 days and that I should return my existing receiver in the shipping box with an enclosed return mailing label. Then he told me that there would be a $99 security deposit charged to my account which would be credited after 12 months. I objected to this and told him that I will not accept any such charge. I asked him to explain what "security" they are trying to ensure. At that point he suggested that I talk with his supervisor, and Mr. Rahul Sharma joined the call. Rahul said he was a "floor supervisor" in the "Equipment & Technical Department" at Dish Network in "Michigan, Detroit" and that I would lose my TV signal if the replacement order was not processed. I told him that I was not willing to pay the security deposit that Ajay referenced, that it did not make sense to me when the issue was apparently Dish's problem. He said he understood, and that the security deposit would be refunded in 12 months. In addition, he said that they would offer a $5-$10 monthly service credit over the 12 month period. I still objected, explaining to him that I may be canceling my Dish service in the near future since Dish has dropped AMC and IFC channels. I told him that I did not want to enter into any long term commitment with Dish at that time. Furthermore, I told him that I would not authorize any charge unless I was given a copy of all terms and conditions related to the charge. Initially he objected but then agreed to send me an email with details of the charge. I confirmed with him that this would be done before I made any type of commitment regarding the receiver replacement and associated security deposit. He agreed, and told me to expect the email within one hour, and he gave me his call back number for me to contact him once I had reviewed the email (313/887-5222). He also provided his Dish ID, "MRM".
11:30 AM (approx.) - I contacted Dish via on-line chat. I told the representative that there were 2 issues -- (1) problems I was having logging into my account, and (2) the legitimacy of the calls from Ajay/Rahul. The representative apparently fixed the log in problem, and first told me that they had no record of the receiver replacement program. I called Rahul at the number he provided and told him this. He said that I need to proceed with the transaction otherwise I would lose the Dish signal. The on-line rep asked if he was from the "EVT" or "ERT" departments, and Rahul reconfirmed that he was with neither department -- he said that there were various departments and that the chat rep was probably with customer service. He said customer service did not know anything about this and that he had all my account information and that he was with the Equipment & Technical Department that is handling the issue for Dish. After I communicated this to the on-line rep, they stated that this could be legitimate, but that it should be escalated to the Executive Resolution Team (ERT). I asked the ERT on-line rep if we could talk over the phone and she said that it was not possible because she was on chat duty. She gave me her number (303/942-8605) and said that I could call and talk with another ERT rep.
12:17 PM - I called the ERT and asked for the on-line chat rep, but was told that she was unavailable. Another rep was provided to me (perhaps Adrian?). I explained all of this to him and he said there is no such program for receiver replacement and that this was probably a scam. I asked him if we could do a conference call with Rahul because I was getting very confused. He agreed. We added Rahul to the call and Rahul was adamant. However, Adrian was firm that nothing needs to be done at this time. We both told Rahul that nothing is authorized and his request to ship a new receiver and charge a security deposit is completely rejected. We ended the call with Rahul based on his acceptance of the decision and I continued with Adrian to discuss the online access problems that I was having -- it happened a few more times. He said he would disable the on-line account and that I would have to recreate it. I also asked Adrian why Dish provides private customer information to these marketing types, he had no explanation.
6:55 PM - I saw that two emails had been sent to me at 5:51 PM indicating that I had ordered equipment from Dish and that a payment had been processed. Both emails came from dishnetwork@dishnetworkmail.com. I was furious.
6:59 PM - I logged in to my credit card account and saw the $671.42 "one-time" charge from Dish. I went to the online Dish account and was able to log in (again using the 4-digit PIN and not the password). Apparently the online account had not been disabled as was promised. I saw that the charge had been posted there as well. I called the ERT and asked for Adrian and was told that he wasn't available but that the current rep could assist me. He assured me that the charge would be reversed in 3-5 days. I was very upset that the charge is instantaneous but that a reversal would take so long.
7:06 PM - I sent my first email to Dish disputing the charge and expressing my anxiety about the "fraud and felony theft."
7:12 PM - I sent my second email to Dish disputing the charge and expressing my anxiety about the "fraud and felony theft."
7:17 PM - I contacted my credit card company and told them that this transaction was fraudulent. They said nothing could be done until the pending authorization turned into an actual charge, and the fraud department told me that it would be best to resolve this with Dish since I receive recurring charges from Dish. They also suggested that I file a police report.- Caller: Dish Network

these are dirty ass indian people running scams on other people....- Caller: Dish Network
- almost fell for it; in-laws didThese scammers are still at it (Oct 2012) -- just tried to hit me for $99.99 for a new Dish receiver/dvr, demanded my credit card number, which I refused to give. I immediately call my in-laws, who are also Dish customers, to warn them about the scam, but unfortunately they had already taken the phony deal and are out $120. I called Dish and they are aware of this scam, and gave me some suggestions to protect our accounts, but beyond that they were very reticent and I was disappointed with their response (probably protecting themselves from a lawsuit if their network security was compromised... don't know how else these scammers could have lists of Dish customers and their phone numbers).
I have reported these guys to the FBI field office in Charlotte, NC. This seems to be a case of Indian scammers targeting Indian customers of Dish.- Caller: Dish Network fraud
- Yogesh replies to Vic B.| 2 replieswhat happened to the 1800 credit to ur account? Did they take it back?
They have contacted me with similar deal and have deposited 2000 in my dish account and asking me to pay by Western Union. - InderI was contacted today. Deal for $950 amount of dollars upfront, with a "golden promotion". They somehow made changes to my account and the installers came in today. A deposit was made to my account with an american express card, and after installation, asked to be paid by western union. I refused western union and was given a physical address in san jose, ca to send a check.

Beware of a hoax caller pretending to be from Dish Network and promising you two years of upgraded service for 70% off. He will tell you that you have to make a payment to him through Western Union. Yeah pal, NICE F*ING TRY.
The amount varies depending on the package you select. He will call DISH using YOUR identity (name, account number or receiver number, pin etc..) and have them upgrade your service. He will also make a "fake credit card payment using AMEX" to your Dish Account.
He will ask you to send a payment of $500 to Lakhvir Sharma, San Jose, CA through Western Union.
DO NOT SEND ANY PAYMENT and more importantly DO NOT TALK TO ANY DESI calling from "DISH Network". They are out to get gullible desi people.- Caller: 303-800-5731
- Call type: Telemarketer
- raj iyer replies to YogeshThat payment was made using a fake credit card number. The idiots at DISH networking send you an email thanking you for your payment. So innocent people think that a legitimate payment has been made.
But the fact of the matter is, the payment is done using a FAKE CREDIT CARD NUMBER (Amex, Visa or MC) and the payment NEVER hits your account. When I called DISH, they said that payment was turned down by the credit card company because the number was not correct. DUH!
Again, the stupid idiots at DISH do not send an email this time, when payment was turned down. Seems to me that DISH network has a lot of loopholes and the scammers are exploiting them. I have reported this problem to the FBI. - sailesh| 1 reply313-887-5222 call and offered attractive deal.Is this Dish number?
- Caller: Sunil warma
- Call type: Telemarketer
- raj iyer replies to saileshIt is not a DISH number. These are con artists calling from India. I have reported this to the CBI in India. FBI is also working on this massive scam. DO NOT WIRE MONEY to anyone using Western Union or Money Gram. The best way to check to make sure they have not changed your programming is to call DISH network.
- sharmasomebody call me from dish network talk about disk upgrade and dish agent was talk [***] with me.
- SamToday evening I received a call from Vijay claiming to be a Dish Network customer service representative (caller id displayed private number). He said Dish Network is changing the satellite orbit and need to verify the compatibility of my receiver. He asked me to press the menu button on the remote and read the model and CA ID of the receiver. Once I gave that info, he verified all my personal info and everything was correct. There is no reason to suspect that he was not from Dish. He explained me that my receiver is not compatible and need a new receiver. Then he said Dish is going to ship a new receiver for free even though it cost almost $700. However, I need to make a security deposit of $40, which will be refunded in 12 months. However, I objected to it as it is not my problem that Dish is changing the satellite orbit. I told him that I do not need the receiver and I may cancel the service. He agreed to it and confirm my decision by providing the last 4 digits of my SSN, which I gave him. Later I found that my online account with dish was compromised and the password was changed. I called dish and they said my service is scheduled to be cancelled after one week because someone called and requested to cancel the service. It looks like the same guy called them and cancelled my service because he has all my personal information from the account. Then I spoke to Executive Resolution Rep. She said she will reinstate my service and close the online account. She said Dish will investigate the issue and she cannot do anything more. So far I did not see any charges on my credit card. However, I will keep monitoring my account. I think dish has security problem with their online system and somone can hack into their system and access personal information. They should be very serious with this issue.
- Srinivas| 2 repliesThis scam is very much alive. Got the call yesterday (12/18/2012) - of course I hadn't read this at the time. The caller said dish was changing their satellite orientation and we would need to replace our receivers. He asked me to press <menu> on the remote and read out the receiver number. Once you give him this info he has access to your account.... how? Because the receiver number is one of the bits of info (account number, e-mail, last 4 of social security, mother's maiden name etc. are others) that is sufficient to gain access your online account from the "forgot online ID" option on login screen. He then proceeds to cement trust by giving you all kinds of information about your account - like monthly billing amount, types of receivers you have, etc. He will then mention your credit card and give you the last 4 digits and ask you for all digits for a holding charge , while your new receivers are being shipped. In my case it was a token $1 charge that would get reversed when I return my old receivers. At that point I refused and hung up on him. Needless to say he had changed my password and email ID of the account so I couldn't log in - something I easily set right by going back in the same way he had.
If anyone gets the call, DO NOT give out your receiver number... and check your online account after the call, just to be sure. Unfortunately the only people reading this are probably those who have already been touched by the scam.- Caller: Dish Network (scam)
- Chris| 1 replyReceived the call at 7:45 pm with Dish Network number. Called Dish Network and they told me no record of calling me today. Two charges in the credit card for $99.99 ; called credit card company to report the fraud. The frustration part is Dish Network is not taking any action. I am sick of Dish Network. Ready to ditch them.

He hung up once the operator from Dish came on. I haven't given any credit card info. Hopefully no charge. Informed Dish Network and also Credit Card company to keep watch.
- Anonymous"Hi guys, I did get the same call 3 days ago. I did not know that caller id can be fooled with new technological scam softwares. I also did not realize that in order for someone to get access to your dish.com account all is needed is your phone number and a receiver id (to request your login id and password). I guess, dish.com securty is too sloppy. who would guess that receiver number can give away so much info? I did give my receiver id and soon after the call during teh conversations realized that the caller had accessed my dish.com while he was on phone. That is how he was able to provide me some details from my account. Off course, after the call I did some google search and learnt about this and thus cancelled the credit card. The caller also tried to hack into my dish account again next morning to charge my credit card etc. and desperately kept calling to get more info. but i just ignored the call!!! To protect yorself from getting hacked again, i suggest you request all "new" receivers from Dish (so you have new receiver number) and provide different contact phone number. And then edit your account information. That way you protect yourself. Just in case the guy has saved your old receiver information and prior phone number doing so (i.e. new receiver and phone combo), it will be harder for the hacker to get in. It is surprising that this is going on for such a long time and no one has yet figured out or given priority to outsmart this hacker. For sure the guy/team is desi and going after desi crowd."

- ETWow, so I JUST heard my father on the phone talking to this guy from "Dish Network" and my dad was saying "I do have Dish Network, who told you I didn't?" and I immediately knew something was fishy. They were offering some kind of a discount. Dish Network should know if we do or do not have their services. So I jumped onto my computer and sure enough it's a scam. I checked the phone and it's from an Unknown Caller and there's an Indian man on the other end. By the time I checked it out, my dad had already given him the Receiver ID number. The man then said he'll call us back in 5 minutes. Nothing yet. Best thing now is to check the online Dish.com account and call Dish directly.
