- Hope it Helps| 9 repliesDear Student Loan Debtors:
You need to educate yourself about the laws of student loan collections before making the decision to just avoid the calls and hope it will go away.
Here are a few points you will hear when talking to a contracted company of the Dept of Education regarding your student loans:
Administrative Wage Garnishment provisions provide for the garnishment of your wages, directly from your employer, without going to court and without your permission.
Also, in the event of non-payment, the Department of Education may decide it is necessary to forward your account to the U.S. Department of Justice to file a civil lawsuit against you.
They’ve passed a law to extend indefinitely the statute of limitations on defaulted student loans, which essentially means you will owe this forever.
Department of Education can add up to 24% in collection fees of your principal and interest.
And, they’ve implemented a program to seize all Federal Tax Refunds and may seize State Tax Refunds in the near future as well.
This is not consumer debt, so the leverage collection agencies have for these student loans is legitimate. BUT ... there are ways you can resolve the account and get some benefits.
Settlements are available where you can do a pay off at a reduced amount if you can do a 1 time lump sum pay off.
Rehabilitation requires you to make an approved payment for 9-10 months, then the account(s) will no longer be in default, cleans up your credit, and the collection and miscellaneous fees get waived. You will have to update a complete financial statement 1st ... just like if you apply for a car or personal loan. You have so justify why you cannot pay it off in full and that you can support a monthly payment plan. The references are used in the event the collector loses contact with you, these will be people who will know how to get a message to you. Your personal account information can not be disclosed.
Want to go back to school and finish your education? Ask about Title IV (Title Four).
Yes ... I am a collector, and I think it's important for all of you to know true information about student loans instead is nonsense opinions that some people post on these walls. Believe it or not, we are trying to help you resolve your account before the account gets forwarded for garnishment or other collection measures.
The choice is yours ... usually voluntary payments are a lot cheaper than 15% of your wages. If we can't reach you, you leave us no other choice.

Call back and ask for ext 3104 if you need more help!
Good luck! - Me replies to Hope it HelpsWhy are they calling people who have never taken out a student loan, multiple times? (Harrassment)
And why do they call during hours that people are probably working, and unable to answer the phone?
And why don't they leave a message?
That is all I want to know.
Don't care about your student debt spamming. - Fedup replies to Hope it HelpsHow do you get these pinheads to correct their records and stop calling the WRONG PEOPLE!!!??? I'm really sick of this harassment for someone else's debt!
- PC PI received a rather bizarre call from a male at this number. My CallerID showed "Unknown Name" & 323-446-0630. The caller asked if I knew my next door neighbor, who he identified by name. This individual wanted to know how well I knew my neighbor and asked if I would leave a message at his door.
This character said his name was Aaron and asked that I leave a message for my neighbor asking him to call Aaron at (800) 620-4287 Ext. 3192. When I asked him what his last name is, he said Machaca (Aaron Machaca).
When I asked how he even got my name and phone number, he said he was searching for some references and obtained my name and number.
This sounds pretty phony and his request of me is most imposing. Why should I verify any information and why should I do his work? This is most intrusive, if you ask me.
In doing a reverse phone look up on the 1-800 #, I see it belongs to a debt collection company, Collection Technology Inc. (CTI), 1200 Corp Center Drive # 325, Monterey Park, CA 91754.- Caller: Collection Technology Inc. (CTI)

- Not guilty replies to Hope it HelpsWhat if you don't owe the Dept of Ed., but a private bank/lender who has made NO effort to come to terms with a debtor's willingness to pay something-- if unable to pay full payments. As soon as I missed one payment they called the whole thing and now their position is 'all or nothing'. I repeatedly stated I was UNABLE to pay on their terms and asked for alternate terms that were doable. They claimed they 'did not have' to provide alternative terms. This has resulted in a statemate while I remain willing to make some payments on some proportion of the principal.
My experience shows me that most debt-collections agents are unintelligent, unimaginative, unsympathetic and unable to make a business decision. In my opinion receiving 65% of a principal is better than receiving none; and when repeated demands for payment fail-- due to inability, not unwillingness, on the part of the debtor-- it's time to get creative and draw ends towards the middle. Sallie Mae and many others don't seem to have much business acumen; and moreover they don't seem to be aware that in these times there are more good people being laid off and cut off from resources than there should be. Simply demanding a desitute debtor 'pay what you owe, before this gets nasty' isn't a sensible or successful strategy.
BTW-- I have been in business many years and have never had this much trouble with any recalcitrant client simply because I am willing to negotiate, when I am the creditor. But when I am the debtor my own creditors don't seem to extend to me what I would readily extend to those who owe me. I can get payment out of anyone; the reason the student-loan bank can't get payment from me is their fault, not mine; for I remain willing to negotiate if they are. - Tango Yankee replies to Hope it HelpsHey Hope it Helps ... WHY won't the creditors respond to or use email? Don't want a record of their tactics maybe?

- Jeff| 1 replyThey called asking for one of my friends that used me as a "reference". I asked who they were and why they were calling me. They just kept saying that a friend used me as a reference. I laughed and told asked them why the %$# would I give you personal information about my friends if you can't tell me who you are. I hung up and they haven't called back.
