- T. MI| 1 replyReceived a call from a restricted number 3-21-14. Individual claimed they received a message from my computer and there was a problem. Caller did not offer a company name, had what sounded like an Indian accent, with noise of a call center in the background. I informed the caller that I was familiar with this scam to obtain personal information. He assured me it was not a scam. I requested his name and number, he said his name was Robert and gave me the above number. I did not call the number and was not able to fins any information about it with on-line searches.

- IT ProGot a call from "Computer Security Technical Support", which "contracts with Microsoft to resolve Windows Updates issues". Being in the industry, I knew the call was a scam, but was curious what's their deal. Long story short, lady on the phone directed me to run "msconfig", and had me sort the Services by Status. She then pointed out all the stopped services, including many from Microsoft (for non techies, this is NORMAL - not all services run at all times, and not all services need to be running, even if they are from Microsoft). The lady, who identified herself as "Sasha" and gave me a call back number of 347-674-9911, then explained that if I want to "fix all these serious problems", all I have to do is go to this website called "teamviewer.com"... this is where I started laughing quite uncontrollably, and abruptly ended the phone call. For non-techies: TeamViewer is a remote access software that allows someone to control your computer remotely.
Unfortunately, I can see how this ridiculous scam can actually work on a non-technical user. Please remember, Microsoft, or any other company, will NOT call you, unless you're paying for professional/enterprise technical support and maintenance contracts, typically for servers - read: if you're just using a computer or a laptop at home, or even a small business, ANY unsolicited tech support call is either an attempt to sell you something [you probably don't need] or a SCAM.- Caller: Computer Security Technical Support "on behalf of Microsoft"

- AMDI totally agree with IT Pro. If you go to Microsoft's website at http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/msname.aspx you can read about avoiding scams that use Microsoft name fraudulently. They will also tell you what to do if you think you have been a victim of a scam.
- Caller: Com Secure Tech Support (said his name was Victor)
- Janis from Georgia replies to TedGot a call today from 347-674-9911, girl said she was from COMSECURE, a certified tech of Microsoft about my computer being slow and not being able to receive any Microsoft updates.
Told her all my updates were successful and she insisted I go to Windows Errors and she would help "repair" my computer. Said her name was Nancy, had an Indian accent and sounded like she was in a call center. Lots of other callers in the background. I checked my Windows Updates while talking to her, and they have all been successful. Told Nancy that and she got irritated with me. Told her I didn't have time for her nonsense and hung up. Called a friend and he said SCAM SCAM SCAM. - Paula LambI called my 24/7 lifetime tec support number to find out if this number is a scam. Please be advised? they said YES. Do not allow them to do anything to your computer. I asked how they had info about the issue I was actually having and they are going to check when they assist technically on my computer. A word to the wise is sufficient. I would recommend extreme caution. If you are having issues with your computer either use your tech support provided when you purchased your computer or a local reputable dealer.
