- jb| 3 repliesThis was the best scam call i have gotten in a while, she needed personal information about me for the job I had recently applied for. Twice I told her I hadn't applied for any jobs in the last 12 years. Without a beat she moved into telling me I had inquired online about additional education opportunities. I informed her that I have a PHD and I don't need any more education. As I have learned from other postings she ended the call with have a blessed day to which i said "then stop cold calling people". I feel bad for anybody who may have recently applied for a job and fell for it. I can only imagine the damage she could cause if I had bought the line of bull she was selling.

- cartman replies to jbI get calls from this number almost once a day on a brand new cell number that I have not given out at all. I didn't talk to the woman, but I answered without saying anything and let South Park play in the background with Cartman cursing and shouting :) She said hello a few times and then hung up - clearly not a legit call, so toy with them :)
- IAmTheWalrus replies to pinkysmom55File a complaint with the registry.
https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx?panel=2 - noel| 1 reply487 121 9722 calling me to but nobody on other end & I am on the don't call registery. This number & several like it call constantly....very bothersome.
- Steve replies to noelThey are using fake area codes so you can't file a complaint. The complaint form won't recognize the area code and won't let you proceed to the next step
- the magic 8 ball| 1 replyYou people who think the Do Not Call list should be affective against these types of calls are clueless. That list only works for legitimate businesses who respect the law. These people are criminals. Criminals don't care about the law.
"Report to FCC, Do Not Call list, etc." You are also clueless. The numbers they use are spoofed (that's why the number is not in service when you try and call it back), so reporting them does no good. When the police, FCC or whoever looks into the number you reported, they will find out it's a fake (out of service/unused) number. The only way these calls could be tracked back the their source would be an active phone trace when the call comes in, and in most states that requires a court order. And even then the calls will be coming from a pre-paid "burner" cell or a foreign country.
What most of you fail to understand is that the problem is not the Do Not Call list, it's the phone companies. When the telecommunications industry created the Caller ID system they left it open for easy spoofing. It should have been an encrypted, secure system, but it's not. It's actually very simple to spoof any number. There are applications, and even web sites that will do it for you. Literally anyone can do it. A five minute search on google is all it takes.
The only, admittedly temporary solution is to block the call. That will work until the crooks move on to a new spoofed number, at which point you block that number, rinse, repeat. If you don't have a smart phone and/or a provider that has call blocking, then create a scammer, telemarketer contact and set it to a silent ring tone. The contact solution is not as elegant as call blocking because you will still see the missed call, but at least you won't be woken up in the middle of the night by some idiot trying to get your social security number.
Again, depending on your phone, you could also set it to go to silent or off-line (airplane) mode at night when you'd normally be asleep Mine is set to do that between midnight and 8am, so that even when they switch to a new fake number I won't be woken up (which tends to be a big problem for me due to the time zone I live in).
The most extreme and effective fix would be to block all calls from numbers not on your contact list. That would effectively eliminate these nuisance calls. The risk with that is that you would miss a call from emergency services (police, hospital) if someone you know has you listed as their emergency contact number.
The bottom line is, until the telecommunications industry does something about the crappy caller ID system, we are all pretty much screwed. These crooks will keep calling, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. If it's not a number you are expecting a call from, just don't answer. If it is a legitimate call they should leave a message. Otherwise, assume it's a scam and ignore the missed call.
And don't waste your time calling them back. If it wasn't important enough to leave you a message, then it obviously wasn't an important call. Delete the missed call and don't give it a second thought.
Unless, of course, you are expecting a call from a deposed Nigerian price who wants to transfer ten million dollars to your bank account, in which case you should give me a call, because I can give him a message for you...- Caller: n/a
