- Tim| 2 repliesreceived a phone call from this number. It is the treasury scam. Man with a heavy Indian accent tells me he is from the treasury dept and they will take legal action if i don't call another number within 2 hours. here is what's posted on the Treasury inspector Generals web site
"The truth is the IRS usually first contacts people by mail – not by phone – about unpaid taxes. And the IRS won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone."- Call type: Debt collector
- Peggy replies to TimI had fun with this one! I was really nice and kept asking him who I was calling, I told him that my Husband was an attorney for the government and I wanted to make sure this was taken care of. I asked him to stay on the line to make sure the call was traceable and he hung up on me. His name was Lee Jones,
- JFScam not a real government agency calling
- TAXLAW1 replies to TimThis is the typical IRS scam call, and the phone used cannot be traced, as I tried to do it. It was probably a throw-away phone, of the type often used by scammers, since it cannot be traced, as it is only used a few times. Be aware that if this was a legitimate IRS call, a call-back number would usually be 1-800-XXX-XXXX. Even if the number left was an 800 one (scammers use 800 numbers also) or the person left a Treasury ID number, this also could be a scam, since scammers have learned this is how the Service operates. Payments can be made by credit card, although only if the call is initiated by the taxpayer, not by the Service. There are times IRS calls, so be wary of this also. Never give personal information or make a payment if you did not initiate a call to a legitimate Service number. Be aware, be vigilent and be knowledgeable.
- KerryThey called me yesterday, I had fun with this call! They advised me I owed taxes and they've sent me numerous letters....funny I've never gotten any. The best part is they called us a few weeks ago and said my husband owed money. What a scam....some people need to get a life....and a real job!!
- TMCYep - I got this today too. Heavy unintelligible Indian accent. Glad we googled the number! (Although it said "scam" to me) Stay safe and vigilant!
