They sound like Pakistani / Indian with British accent. They played it real well, but thank God I did not paid them.  They say if you do not pay they will deport you or they will jail and they will put lien on your house, cars.
He said he is IRS senior Tax investigator, and his name is William Reece.

They make themselves sound pathetic. Said his name was Charlie King. He sounded like a guy from India or Pakistan. I told him I was born at night but not last night. And I pay more in taxes that he makes in a year. Told him bring it on  and hung up. Someone is got to do something.

IRS Phone Scam again. Different numbers now. They even left a robot voicemail. I try to laugh, but other people might fall for it. People with poor English skills may be more at risk, and the elderly, with little knowledge of internet resources to check on these scams. Not funny

I've been getting these same calls..I called back and the tried having a conversation to feel out the accent. Definitely Indian or Pakistan type accent. Guy asks me to verify My number... So I told him you must know since you called me. He then starts asking what time is it- where I am? So I said:what the hell you talking about? And then it went sideways... They started making fun of me for getting mad and telling them I'm calling the FBI. They started telling me about me having too much coffee etc etc...I was unloading on them [***] cockroaches.
Someone needs to find them and AR15 their [***] back where they came from.

Another IRS scam call stating I was being investigated for tax evasion. Funny, because I've always paid my taxes early. I got a similar call yesterday from a different number from the 571 area code. My guy sounded like he had a Russian accent.
    • Caller: IRS (supposedly)

Thanks all for your comments. I kept getting calls and messages that were hard to fully understand. The last one I was threatened to be taken to jail if I did not call back. I did just for the heck of it and got a busy signal a few times. I read you all's comments while doing so and realized the scam. I texted back the # and told them to take me off their F****** list.

I just got the same call - claiming to be William Reece from the IRS. When I asked him where he was located he hesitated then said "Virginia" but the phone number on my cell phone caller ID says Michigan.  Threatened me with jail, property lien, frozen assets - the whole works.  Scared the crap out of me but I looked online while talking to him and found this page. The thing that worried me is that I was able to call him back at that number - I am on hold with the IRS right now to make sure that this is a scam - do any of you have verification that this is a scam? The guys were very unprofessional so I think taht it is but man - what a scare.

As a followup - I called the IRS to confirm that this was a scam and it was.  The IRS representative told me that there had been no activity in my file and the methods described were not their standard policy.  Also, before she could talk to me she needed me to verify my name, address, SSN, DOB as well as the same for my wife (joint filing status) and indicated that she is not allowed to talk with anyone about their account without first confirming that data.  The scammer did no confirmation outside of my name and address when he talked to me.

It was very unnerving and the immediacy of peril that the caller instills in you can cloud your judgement at first - luckily I had enough wits about me to suspect and verify that it was indeed a scam.

I reported it online and to the IRS rep. FYI - I am still here at my home 8 hours later - despite his insistence that the cops would be here to detain me within 2 hours.

The giveaways for me were this:
    * he said he was calling from Virginia but the number is listed as Michigan
    * claimed his name was William Reece but had a distinct middle-eastern accent
    * handed me off to his boss who also had a totally American name but the same middle-eastern accent - too much coincidence

Beware - do not give these guys any info - they are 100% scammers.

Got the same call from the "IRS". Says call them before "the matter escalates." I'm sure the authorities could find these people in Michigan.

William Reece, speaking in a very thick east Indian accent, called me today from 804-554-3018, giving me 2 hours to show good faith to prevent the IRS from freezing all my accounts and taking me into custody by close of business.

    He provided the following info:
    William Reece
    Badge ID 89681
    Senior Investigation Officer
    IRS Legal Deparment

Outstanding balance of $4985 for tax years 2008-2012
Stated I was being charged with 4 counts or violations of the tax code
Stated I had violated Section 331H and the IRS was implementing a lien on all of my assets

He stated they had sent registered mail but it had been returned.  He used an old address which made it convincing enough for me to drive to my local IRS office to address any issues.  The IRS clerk already had a flyer ready to give me once I stated the nature of my request.  Apparently, this IRS scam is active right now and they have investigators on the case.

TIGTA Warns of “Largest Ever” Phone Fraud Scam Targeting Taxpayers

WASHINGTON — The Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration (TIGTA) today issued a warning to taxpayers to beware of phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in an effort to defraud them.

“This is the largest scam of its kind that we have ever seen,” said J. Russell George, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. George noted that TIGTA has received reports of over 20,000 contacts and has become aware of thousands of victims who have collectively paid over $1 million as a result of the scam, in which individuals make unsolicited calls to taxpayers fraudulently claiming to be IRS officials.

“The increasing number of people receiving these unsolicited calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to represent the IRS is alarming,” he said. “At all times, and particularly during the tax filing season, we want to make sure that innocent taxpayers are alert to this scam so they are not harmed by these criminals,” George said, adding, “Do not become a victim.”
oting that the scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every State in the country. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.

The truth is the IRS usually first contacts people by mail – not by phone – about unpaid taxes. And the IRS won’t ask for payment using a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The IRS also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone.

“If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and uses threatening language if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling,” he said.
