He contacted me via txt after I posted an ad for some rare timber panelling on gumtree. He asked me to email him if the item was still available. When I did he said he was buying it for his dad in Malaysia. He then asked me to take down the ad because it was definitely sold. He then asked for my paypal email and sent me an email saying money had been paid to my paypal. He then sent me another email:

"I just completed the payment via PayPal,a total of $2,500 was
sent,1,500 for the merchandise and the extra $900 for my shipper's
charges and $100 for the western union fees,which you will be sending
to the address below via western union

Address; 12, TMN BUKIT SEPUTIH,
KUALA LUMPUR
MALAYSIA


My shipper would be coming around to your area to have the merchandise
picked up once you have sent the shipping charges fee to them,as i
need you to let me know what time you want them to come and where
(your address & phone # you can be reached on)

I will be waiting to hear from you once the money has been sent to my
shipper.Thanks for the business."

I then managed to get his other phone number out of him by stringing him along so I could pass it on to the authorities. He just winged about how his paypal was restricted and urged me to complete the transaction quickly. There was also an email from "paypal" that said the money wouldn't be released until I had sent a scan of the Western union transfer.

They just don't give up though so make sure you stop straight after the txt or as soon as you find out he is not buying locally. Again be careful of all transactions completed on Gumtree that are not in person.

Thanks for the above. Same is happening to me today! I had a motorbike advertised and this scammer  is pulling the same stunt again. The old adage "If it sounds too good to be true it probably is" applies in this case.

wow this is crazy. I just posted an add for my car and received the exact same thing however he used the name Harrison Croft with the email harcroft@live.com. I received an email from "paypal" saying that the funds of $5200 had been paid from the buyer and to release the funds I would need to pay $600 to his agent to organise collection of the vehicle. I wasnt to keen on this as I wouldve had to use my own money. I don't fall prey to easily to scammers as I work in fraud but those unlucky people who arent aware and clearly honest people who think this is ligit please be very wary. I have since forwarded the email to spoof@paypal.com.au for them to investigate further and I will be stringing this person along to ensure he keeps accounts open for them to catch this nasty person and to teach him a valuble lesson.

The Shipping company was Petronas Tankers and the $900 for shipping was to be transferred via Western Union.

same he got me today sayin he was sarah alex from malaysia email alexfred75@yahoo.com.au and was buying my vehcile $1800 but i got a dodgy email from a dodgy paypal sayin he deposited $2800 in my account and $900 for shipment to petronas tankers and $100 to western union he nearly got me some1 has o get this idiot..

what a JOKE i just had same thing just about to email him and tell him to get f*****!!! not imprested!!!

Got the same email for a motorcycle on eBay from SARAH ALEX  15 SUBWAY RD KUALA LUMPUR, I went a little further and sent an old MTCN number to buy some time while I sent his emails to local, interpol, and royal Malaysian police, he then sent an email that there was something wrong with the transaction as western union couldn't find it and for me to sort it out with them. Then I received an email again from "Paypal" with  the following: Western Union will request for the following details of the receiver when calling them: Receiver's Name: Sarah Alex Date Of Birth :June 06 1971 Phone Number +60146350810 Type of ID (Drivers License) Number of ID:25926975 Expiry:03082012. Hopefully he can be caught, and in Malaysia, I beleive they also have corporal punishment with jail time for white collar crime.

Exact same thing happened to me he barely changes the words in the sentences. got me for the $900 which ends up being $2300 or something in their money. NOT HAPPY someone needs to catch the son of a [***], joke is it wasn't even my car i was selling, it was my mums!
Told a big story about being a marine and not being able to pay his own fees because he was offshore, impersonating a marine is NOT very smart.

we have just had the same thing happen to us. Someone with the email of ann.jessica42@yahoo.com scam with word for word exact same thing. Got all the way till when we were told where to send the shipping and western union fees.  Am a bit worried, can they still do anything with my full name, address, paypal email address and phone number?

Same scam happened to me.  He claimed he was a engineer stuck at sea & wanted our car advising he had paid the funds into our Paypal account & to forward a money transfer via Wester Union to:
