We are the Campaign for Our Communities, a coalition of
community organizations, labor unions and faith organizations
working together to strengthen the Commonwealth’s economy
and to improve the quality of life for Massachusetts families. To
achieve these goals, we know that smart investments in our
people and our communities are needed. We support any
proposal that meets the following principles:
Raises significant new revenue
Holds down tax increases for low- and
middle-income families
Uses new revenues for a broad array of services,
not just transportation
We know that you must balance the state’s budget while coping
with a substantial deficit at a time when our roads, bridges and
public transportation system are in dire need. At the same time,
our education system, our mental health system and public
health services have all been suffering due to years of budget
cuts. To make matters even worse, you must balance the budget
after five consecutive years of enormous deficits, which means
that any cuts you make this year will come on top of already
dramatic spending cuts.
We respectfully suggest that you look toward a solution that
permits you to strengthen our economy and improve the quality
of life for Massachusetts families. Solutions such as “An Act to
