- Dale| 1 replyi got a call on halloween at 1 pm. Yes its portfolio recovery, the bottom feeders that suck dirt. They buy old debts that they can't collect on so don't give these scumbags any information about yourself. I harass them right back, call them everything but white and they will hang up on you. Give these @ssholes a piece of your mind!

- Jack in AZThis number just called 6 pm Arizona time. The caller ID gave this number and Las Vegas NV but no other IDs. I have gotten calls in the past from Portfolio Recovery Services where they actually identified themselves on the caller ID but not this time. Of course they did not leave a message on my machine - they never do, no matter what number or caller ID they use. I never actually answer these calls BTW. It does you absolutely no good. If you answer and give them any info at all it just confirms that you live there and they call even more. If you actually make an offer to pay an old debt that has passed the statute of limitations, the clock is restarted and your debt becomes current again, setting your credit rating back. Chances are good that the original debt has been written off by the original creditor as a loss, and they have been given a tax credit for it by the IRS. So even if you offered to pay the original debt to the original creditor, they by law could not accept it. Companies like Portfolio Recovery Services buy "debt paper" for pennies on the dollar, then use any means possible to try to "collect". It's all really a big scam, and these outfits should be outlawed and put out of business IMO.

Have fun Portfolio Recovery, you purchased my debt so now it's your problem.- Call type: Debt collector
- This number belongs to Criminals| 1 replyBest advice is to never answer out of state calls from someone you don't know.
Portfolio Recovery brags about having over 5,000 phone numbers. You will never block them. If you answer they will call you forever, knowing they have a live number (yours). DO NOT ANSWER. Notify the FCC of this group's illegal activities immediately. They also pride themselves on their harassment "skills". Don't answer. Probably convicts in prison working for 10 cents per hour.
Write down time and phone number, notify FCC. Their activities are 100% illegal.- Caller: Portfolio Recovery

- LanaJ replies to This number belongs to CriminalsNo, not convicts in prison. Well maybe sorta. I used to work for them. They put companies in areas that have little job opportunities and then pay about 3.00 more per hour plus commission so you will want to keep your job. At whatever cost. Including: Threats & lying to an alleged debtor about the particulars of the debt. They will try to collect on out of stat debt as well as bankruptcy. They train their employees for a month about the laws for collection - but when they get to the floor - it is a whole other world. I left because they "monitored a call" I had made to an alleged debtor. I was written up for not affirming with the alleged debtor that the additional fees were from the original loan. I had no idea where the fees came (no documentation was filed the debt) from so I couldn't LEGALLY say where they were from without exposing myself to a fine. Me personally - not PRA. That's 5k. I made 13.00 and hour - you do the math.
DO NOT give then any information. Even if you know the person - unless you are up for playing 20 questions and can get them to admit any of the debtors details to you.(huge fines for them if they do) RECORD the CALL, tell them that you are doing so, they will usually hang up. They trace calls when someone picks up and record that number in the data bank. It goes onto the debtors automated file. No matter what you tell them. They are supposed to XXX_XXX_XXXX a number when they are told it is not a viable number, many agents will not. The law says that they MUST, same with cell phones and in most cases work numbers.
IF you mess up and pick up the phone send them a Debt Collector Disclosure Statement along with a C&D (Cease and desist) via Signature Confirmation. It MUST be placed on hold for a minimum number of days without a call back, as in the day they receive the dispute. They MUST be able to PROVE the debt. PERIOD. and most 3rd party-collection agencies CAN'T.....hope this helps guys
If the debt is actually yours - ALWAYS speak directly to the manager, DO NOT set up payment arrangements - you want those canceled checks, do not pay via credit card. ONLY pay the debt if it is still valid - not out of stat. Paying an out-of-stat bill will do nothing for your score (at least in my own personal experience)
If all else fails, get very familiar with Fair Debt Collection Practices and be able to site statute. That will usually stop them at least for a bit because newbies don't know how to handle these kind of answers. - dlwI looked at missed calls on my cell phone and this number came up, but no message was left!
Thanks for all the information. I will not answer any calls that I don't know who it is.- Caller: 702-410-7076

- Jenny replies to DaleCall the Federal Trade Commission at 1-202-326-2222 or on the web go to www.ftc.gov then they will stop. Be sure to have the tel # they called you from and the name of the person that called you, document every word they said to you. The Federal Trade Commission does not tolerate this abuse, even if you owe portfolio money.
