I picked up after 2 rings and there was no answer.

This is very annoying.  This automatic dialer rings our number every evening between 8:00 and 9:00 pm.  We never snaswer.  How can we make them stop?

a supposed cancer charity that spends a significant portion of the revenues it receives on its own operations-incuding nice salaries and perks for its employees.  That's why they hound you death.  Did u ever hear of a reputable cancer organizqtion that will call you repeatedly after you tell them to please cease?  I rest my case.

What riles me is that these sleeze bags dupe the public into paying them money.  If you really want to fight cancer- make a donation to slona kettering in nyc, or cancer care. Be wary of these other outfits.  BTW, I am a cancer patient....

Several rings, no answer when picked up.

Call many many times a day at all times of the day.  They make me feel like I am a deadbeat running from a debt collector! I want to support Cancer Research and other Cancer Programs but I am now not so sure this is a very good association to donate to.

I'm not sure yet if this number is even a real number associated with the real Cancer Fund of America support services. The message when you call back says they are, but the number does not match the customer support number on the legitimate websites for this organization. I emailed them to ask if this is one of their calling numbers, I'll post the response when I get it.  But as a consideration , the Cancer Fund of America does not meet one or more of the 20 standards for Charity Accountability by the BBB report for charities and have had several complaints logged.

Standard 8 : Program Service Expense Ratio - Spend at least 65% of its total expenses on program activities.

CFA does not meet this Standard because according to the organization's audited, consolidated financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2005, the organization spent $7,755,278 or 34% of its total expenses ($22,837,610) on program service activities.
Standard 9 : Fund Raising Expense Ratio - Spend should be no more than 35% of related contributions on fund raising. Related contributions include donations, legacies, and other gifts received as a result of fund raising efforts.

CFA does not meet this Standard because:CFA does not meet this Standard because according to its audited, consolidated financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2005, the organization's fund raising costs were 64% ($14,040,224) of related contributions which totaled $21,914,630.
Standard 12 : Detailed Functional Breakdown of Expenses - Include in the financial statements a breakdown of expenses (e.g., salaries, travel, postage, etc.) that shows what portion of these expenses was allocated to program, fund raising, and administrative activities. If the charity has more than one major program category, the schedule should provide a breakdown for each category.

CFA does not meet this Standard because its audited financial statements do not include a functional breakdown for each major program (i.e. patient services, community services, and public health education).
Standard 17 : Web Site Disclosures - Include on any charity websites that solicit contributions, the same information that is recommended for annual reports, as well as the mailing address of the charity and electronic access to its most recent IRS Form 990.

CFA does not meet this Standard because its website, www.cfoa.org, does not include all of the recommended information for those charity websites that solicit for donations. Specifically, it does not include a board roster or financial information. The website also does not provide electronic access to the organization’s most recent IRS Form 990.
Standard 18 : Privacy for Written Appeals & Internet Privacy - Address privacy concerns of donors by (a) providing in written appeals, at least annually, a means (e.g., such as a check off box) for both new and continuing donors to inform the charity if they do not want their name and address shared outside the organization, (b) providing a clear, prominent and easily accessible privacy policy on any of its websites that tells visitors (i) what information, if any, is being collected about them by the charity and how this information will be used, (ii) how to contact the charity to review personal information collected and request corrections, (iii) how to inform the charity (e.g., a check off box) that the visitor does not wish his/her personal information to be shared outside the organization, and (iv) what security measures the charity has in place to protect personal information.

CFA does not meet provision (b) of this Standard because its website, www.cfoa.org does not provide access to a privacy policy with the recommended information.The Alliance is currently unable to verify if CFA meets the remaining provision of this Standard.


Standard 19 : Cause Related Marketing - Clearly disclose how the charity benefits from the sale of products or services (i.e., cause-related marketing) that state or imply that a charity will benefit from a consumer sale or transaction. Such promotions should disclose, at the point of solicitation: (a) the actual or anticipated portion of the purchase price that will benefit the charity (e.g., 5 cents will be contributed to abc charity for every xyz company product sold), (b) the duration of the campaign (e.g., the month of October), (c) any maximum or guaranteed minimum contribution amount (e.g., up to a maximum of $200,000).

CFA does not meet this Standard because, in the past year, the organization participated in promotions for the sale of consumer goods and services that indicate the organization will benefit from these purchases.  The promotions, however, do not specify the actual or anticipated amount of the purchase price that will benefit the organization.
Standard 20 : Complaints - Respond promptly to and act on complaints brought to its attention by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance and/or local Better Business Bureaus about fund raising practices, privacy policy violations and/or other issues.

CFA does not meet this Standard because in the last 36 months, the BBB processed 9 complaints and only 4 were addressed.


In addition, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance requested but did not receive complete information on the organization’s governance and oversight, effectiveness measures, finances, solicitation materials, and annual report and is unable to verify the organization's compliance with the following 10 Standards for Charity Accountability: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, and 16.  

Cancer Fund of America (CFA) meets the remaining 3 Standards for Charity Accountability.

I checked with the Cancer Fund of America - I emailed them from their website and had them check this number. They verified it is one of their call center numbers. I would still however think first if this would be a good organization to donate to as they have only met 3 of the 20 standards for charity organization according to the BBB report. They do not give 100% of the money donate to those in need as they have claimed on the phone to some people. They are supposed to put at least 65% toward their help programs, but per BBB's last report they do not.

I have received two calls from this number today -- a federal holiday!  When I answered, there was no one there.

I received 10 calls from this number in just little over 6 hours! This is getting ridiculous! I answered once but no answer, I have caller ID and after the second call, I didn't even bother to pick up. The phone just keeps ringing.

I answered and said "hello" more than once, but noone answers.  All I got was static on the other end.

Called today. I find this highly insulting since most people I know who have cancer die broke from the cost of medications, which they say they provide. Where is this so called charity when most people with cancer need it? I honestly thought this was a prank call since I know people with cancer and someone was trying to be funny. Oh yeah, like there's a charity that will help people with cancer pay for things. Yeah right. I hung up. As the lady was talking I also thought she was trying to sell me life insurance. I couldn't figure out what it was.

These people have called me 3 times in less than an hour this morning. I told them the first time we were not home. The third time they called I said I told you less than an hour ago they are not home. Called 6 times yesterday. They are relentless!

Even if it IS from the Cancer Fund of America - Support Services, the American Institute of Philanthropy gives it an "F", and they just settled a suit with the state of Georgia over the paulty 17% of the money taken in going to the people they are supposed to be serving.

I was called today by caller 'Unknown' from 800-390-4812 per my Caller ID. When I picked up there was dead air. Not a dial tone or message, nothing. Yet my line was left open, connected. I hung up and 3 minutes later 800-390-4812 called me back and I heard a message asking if I would like to leave a message.

So much for being on the State and National No Call Registry. But even so I used the FCC form and reported them for both calls.

Woman tried to misrepresent herself as THE Cancer Society, saying they provided medications for the uninsured and food for the hospice patients. When I told her I had just made a donation to THE Cancer Society and that I was a hospice volunteer, and I was really confused as to how they could be involved that way, she back-pedaled and said said she was from the Cancer Fund of America, not the American Cancer Society. When I tried to question her more she hung up on me. The American Institute of Philanthropy rates them an "F" as they only contribute 16% of what they collect. What a rip off artist!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Calls at least once a day--sometimes 3 or 4. This has been going on for months!
Check them out--they don't help anyone but themselves with your donation. Not really a charity!

They called on August 14th at 12:30PM. I have disabled voicemail because of calls like these. Second time they called. The first time I hung up on them in mid sentence.
