Call to this number from my cell phone. Didn't answer. No message left. I do have a Citizens account, but I doubt they would contact me this way. Probably some scum-scammer using the number ...

This actually is not a scam.  Citizens Bank recently reissued new debit cards because they switched from Visa to Mastercard.  You are getting a call because you either have not used or did not receive your new card.

    RE:800-671-7916
I also just spoke with Citizen's (I called THEM...)...THIS IS A SCAM TO RETRIEVE AS MANY DEBIT CARD NUMBERS AS POSSIBLE...Citizen's is aware of the problem and said that the scammers target states where there are a large number of Citizen's customers due to the likelihood of reaching someone who gives them the information they seek.

Now, I'm wondering just HOW the scammers had my correct
name and called on my cellphone...I did NOT give any information, luckily,
but if you did give them any info report your card IMMEDIATELY to Citizen's.

got a call from this number, didn't answer my phone (was on silent) ...no voicemail was left for me and no additional calls were received from this # except for 1 time. I think it's b/c I haven't activiated my new card yet (since they switched from mastercard to visa)

Just spoke to the bank. There's no way of knowing if this number is real or not on their end. There is no outgoing number listed for this call. However, they did say that there are calls going out concerning the new Visa cards. But that they are ONLY AUTOMATED MESSAGES. No actual person should be on the phone. Also, just a tip....when any bank calls a customer, they will never ask for personal information. If you call a bank, then will will ask you to verify info.

But, this isn't a scam...as long as you don't actually speak to a person. The real call is totally automated.

I just got a call from this number. I said hello, and since there was a delay where no one responded I quickly hung up, since I thought it was from a call center. Guess I was right.

I got a call from this number around 3pm today, no message left. Just got another one (7pm). This time they left an automated message letting me know about the Visa cards they sent out, reminding me to activate it (I haven't yet), and asking me to call if I had not received one. Seems like some of the calls must be legit.

I called back Citizens via the 800 number on my debit card. They confirmed that this number is indeed legitimate. Nevertheless, I didn't hesitate to let them know how absolutely ridiculous it is for a bank to ask for financial information on an incoming call from an unknown number. The bank is using multiple numbers to complete this project, it would not be difficult for a scammer to set up his own 800 line and rip people off under the guise of an official bank call. Shame on you, Citizens.

I got a call from this number tonight at 7:00 PM. My caller ID indicated it was from "Unavailable".

It was a robo call, and it asked for me by name ("press 5 if this is you"), then it said it was not a sales call but was very important regarding my account and to press 5 to continue. I hung up and called Citizens on a known number I use all the time.

They said they did not initiate the call, there was no problem with my account,  and I asked about the credit card thing. They said they would not call me to activate the card, that was entirely up to me.

I am not sure what is going on here. The bank said if they had a problem, they'd send me a letter or they would call during the day and it would be a person and the caller ID would say "Citizen's Bank", not "Unavailable." They said they have no record of the toll free number either and they did not initiate the call.

So I am figuring the bank knows what they are doing and that this is possibly a scam. Better to hang up than get into problems!

I just called the number back and it said Citizens Bank.  Options to change phone banking info and stuff.  When transferred to a representative they just answer customer service.  This number is not listed on Citizens website and the only calls they are doing now are to check to see if debit cards were received.  This phone call has to be a scam.  Don't give them any info.

What concerns me is: How did they know my name, my phone# and that I have an account with citizensbank? My phone keeps ringing with this mofo's calls since almost a month now. My dad, mom and siblings have citizensbank account too.
they tell you to call 1(888)500-1417 to give your SS# and bank account#
WHAT ON THE EARTH THE FBI IS WAITING FOR? (someone is not doing their job)

I researched online and only thing I found that these phone #s are from china.

    skeptical means safe
I've been getting the call recently but I always assume that if my bank has something important to tell me than they will send a letter as they always do. It's best to always assume that no company will ever call you and ask for vital information, not sure if that happens in this call because I didn't progress that far. I do hope I will have triggered something to stop them from calling though; after it says "we have an important message for so and so, press 1," I pressed 1 and then it says "if this is so and so please press 5," at which point I hung up. I'm hoping that somehow registers to whoever this is that they have the wrong person (even though in reality I am the right person).

My girlfriend got odd calls a couple months ago and I don't remember what she did but I know she cut off the call before giving any important info and she was able to trace the number as listed to some hotel in some random city in the US (Chicago if I remember correctly). She immediately called Citizens to report it and they said they were aware of the problem. She hasn't received any more scam calls but I don't know if that's because Citizens took care of that particular scammer or if they just knew that my girlfriend was not a good target anymore.

Best thing to do is just hang up on any calls like this and ask the bank if they would have attempted to contact you for any reason. It is possible this just does have to do with the new cards (switch to Visa) but this is not an appropriate way for Citizens to be notifying people.
