Left a message on the answering machine but didn't identify who they were or what they wanted - just said that it was "important" that the call was returned before the end of the same day and read the number.

I had a similar message on my answering machine, claiming to be from the IRS. I contacted the IRS via a number that I knew was theirs. The worker told me the number was for their collections department. (Fortunately, they had apparently called my number in error!)

    Hi,
I received a call on my cell with unknown at 8 PM and I did not lift the call. Generally the timeshare marketing companies call me so I did not lift the call. I have a legitimate reason to worry as I owe IRS some money and I fell off the installment agreement for a while. I did not get any notice and also not sure as I moved last month and my mail was on hold for some time. I was really worried but after reading the forum I am at ease but will try to call them back to find out what is going on.
thanks and any advive would help me on how are they able to get our information and I know some companies have access to the IRS database and send out mails from attorneys and tell us that they can solve our problems.  I think some attorneys may be doing mischief to get some business by causing worry.

Do not ignore calls from this number.  It is legitimately the IRS and they will work with you.  I just called them and the lady was extremely helpful. She had information that no one else but the IRS could possibly have so be smart and call them back to avoid landing yourself in a situation of no return.  Like I said, they work with you and are accomodating.

    Do not believe.
So someone calls you from an unknown number and asks you for your name, SSN#, address, and birth date. If you give it to them, they send you a notice to send them money.

If you do not give them the information, then they give you the IRS number. You call and they do not have a levy against you. They do this so that that you cannot complain about them. You don't have a number. Don't do it.

The IRS will send you a snail mail everytime.

This is a scam. Eliam is part of the scam.

I will have to agree with "gethelp" on this one.  I, too, owe the IRS money.  I have been out of work for almost a year and had sent in some money towards my balance along with an installment agreement.  I got the message from this number last night and just got off the phone with them.  They are the collection Agency for the IRS (Automated collections Department).  I also felt uncomfortable giving my ss# to them, but I also know from past experience that collection agencies do call as well as send letters.  She will be sending me a new installment agreement (which looks different from the one I sent in, but I found the form number 433d on the irs website).  But just to be safe, I will probably call the regular IRS number when I receive my forms in 7 to 10 business days.

It is a valid IRS number. Do not call back and give your SS#. Go to the official IRS website (irs.gov) or their main help line to get the answers you are looking for.

U can't scam me replies to eliam
This is a PROVEN SCAM. They just want your soc. sec. # or any other info. that you will give them and bank account info. too! I know someone who works for the IRS and they would NEVER call you and ask you for your social or your name, or do anything remotely like this.
Whoever called me gave me a case id number, and they couldn't even tell me my name, because they didn't have it, because it's a SCAM! DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER. The number shows up on the IRS website, but the number has been hacked into, or hijacked.
If you owe them money, they mail you a bill, and if you are getting a tax credit, they send you a check.
They don't call you and leave you a PRERECORDED MESSAGE!!!!!

I got this message on my cell phone last night.
1st I am a stay at home mom, who's husband was in the air force, we have no tax issues that I know of.
2nd I am not in on this scam, and I thought hard about if I was going to even reply to this fearing being attacked.
3rd, if you call the 800-TAX-1040 number (I called at 10 til midnight EST) they will ask you some verifying info and look to see if they have made any attempt to contact you at all.

4th we just bought a house and in order to buy this house we had to provide our tax info for the last tax year, so the IRS knows my address and how to contact us via US mail.

So I called and was told that this is a scam, even if they are giving you the same number listed on the IRS website, they will not call you and leave a message UNLESS you have had prior arrangements made with them in the past regarding levy or garnishment or payment of past IRS debt.

My advise is like others go to your local IRS office to check for yourself before calling back this number, and NEVER ever ever give anyone your info over the phone, EVER.

Also and I don't know if this is related but I had just text Degree to get a free sample, when they texted me back to verify my address they couldn't confirm my address because my cell phone is my only phone and they needed my home number to verify my address, shortly after I received the message that I needed to call the IRS.

Is this a scam, or a real IRS number? I called them back and they said they were the IRS and this is the # for their collections dept. I owe them nothing. I gave them far too much info., and am now regretting it.

I just recieved a call from this number. Their number didn't even show up on my caller id. They did not know my name and said I need to call this number back because it is important and that they are the IRS. So I looked this number up on the internet and no sites recognized the number, not even the official IRS Website. So if you get a call, this is a scam.

I just called the IRS main number (1-800-829-1040) and asked for the fraud department.  I was told that 1-800-829-3903 was a valid IRS number (as probably is 1-800 -829-7650 though I didn't ask about that one).

Last night, I had received a call from an individual who told me to call the 3903 number back.  I did so and did key in my FID, but then hung up.

According to the person I got from the 1040 number, the main IRS number,  I probably did not do anything particularly harmful.  NOTE: I do NOT recommend anyone follow my example.  As others have said, the IRS will ALWAYS send you a letter via conventional (snail) mail first.  Having said that, if you have already done so, this guy didn't think it would be easy/possible to hijack that number.  He also tried to connect me to it so I could find out from them if there was indeed any IRS issue.  But after he tried to connect me, I got an automated message saying they were too busy and to call back another time.  I will wait for a snail mail before doing so.  My accountant says I am completely up to date.

Message left on voice mail from this number saying it was IRS and urgent & to call back with reference number by end of business today.  I deleted the message and did not call as agree with others that IRS would contact by snail mail.  This appears to be a scam - be warned!

    not a dummy
This number showed up on my cell phone 716-206-3218 but a message said
it was the IRS and to call 1-800-8297650.  "Who Calls Me" entries indicates that
this is a scam in which they ask for our Social Security Number, date of birth, etc.
Why not just give them my credit card numbers to save them the trouble.  IFS
will always send you a notice through the mail - they won't contact you by
phone unless you already have been working with them.
