Really irritating people. Says "Hello", and then thats it. No word after it, and then will disconnect after 20-30 seconds. The number changes to something else many a times.
Of course, its almost daily since past few weeks. Oct-Nov' 07.

Called this morning, left no message. Tried to call them back, got a very odd ring tone, not like US ring tones at all.

Yes. They called and called and called and called to the point where I just took the phone off the hook one night. I called the number back and they were polite saying it was some type of marketing group. I told them to take me off the damn list.

I just checked my caller ID. They've called 15 times in the last 30 days, 8 times in the last 11 days. Almost always between 7 and 8 PM except on Saturdays when it's between 11 am and noon. They never leave a message and if I answer the phone, there's no response. I called the number back. Strange (international type?) ring. Recorded answer roughly: "You've reached the general mail box of the Smith Company. If you wish to be purged from our calling lists, record your number. It will take approximately 5 business days to remove it from all our lists." I left my number and a message that they were breaking the law since the number is on the FTC Do Not Call list, hoping that this isn't like Spam where if you respond you make matters worse!

Based on Amy's 7/2/09 comment about stopping the calls from 800-895-0999, I called Smith Co. at their 202-895-0900 number. The woman who answered the phone identified herself as a manager. I told her that I was tired of getting repeated calls from them and not having anyone on the other end of the line when I answered. I asked and she said she would remove my number from their lists. She allegded that their equipment was randoming calling numbers and hanging up. I informed her that if they did not stop calling, I would report them to the FCC for making harrasing calls. Let's see what happens.

I am a National Do Not Call List member who receives daily calls from 800-895-0999.  This caller should be made to stop calling me and the many other private residences who are also receiving these calls.

if you are on the DoNotCallList, file complaints.  If enough are filed, they get fined. It only takes a minute:

This firm has no responsibility; I don't care who the collect funds for. Do report to the do not call list if you are registered. As one respondent noted the more complaints the greater the chance that they can be stopped.

Missed their call (thankfully).  To be fair, you may be exempt from the Do Not Call registry protection if you do business with any of their (Smith Co.) clients.  See JLV's post above.  Also see the Federal Trade Commission page http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.shtm , specifically items 28 to 32.

I received a call from this number last night at 7:44 PM. I saw the 800 number coming in and let it go to my answering machine. The call did not speak for the first 10-15 seconds, but then could hear the person taking the phone off mute or juggling the receiver to get on the line and came on and asked for me by first and last name. The person had a very strange voice, funny pitch, possibly Asian. At first my husband thought it was a crank call from a friend, but I told him it was an 800 number.
