I received a phone call tonight. An automated voice told me their office had important medical business to discuss with "Leon Russell." (I've never heard of Leon Russell.) I could press 1 if "Leon Russell" was home, 2 if he was available and on his way to the phone, or 3 if he was not at home. When I pressed 3, I was told to please give Leon Russell the message and have him call back 1-800-900-1380 as soon as possible. When I called it (and I tried twice), it didn't ring.

they've called my place a couple times (I just registered my phone service and it is not a listed number, so no idea how they even got it).  the "company" calling is Penn Credit Corporation - a collection agency... i monitor my credit very closely and know for sure i don't know jack to anyone.  my assumption is that they either a) are trying to track down someone else or b) they are a scam.  from what i can gather from the info available w/the BBB, this company gets quite a few complaints (http://www.dc.bbb.org/report.html?national=Y&compid=70001231)... about 15 years ago i trashed my credit (while in college, big surprise)... this could be one of those companies who buys "old debt" (meaning it no longer shows up on your credit report, and has likely been paid or written off) for pennies and then offers to "settle" with you for some $amt less than the amount written off... companies like this make it seem like they are doing you a favor, and get you concerned about your credit history so that you will pay them for a debt you do not actually owe.  they might even target people who have previously had credit problems that they have since repaired, knowing that you've "made good" and assume you're likely to do the same now even if you don't owe.

I get this recorded message daily. I know my credit is excellent, and always has been. I don't press any numbers when prompted, for fear that it is one of those prison scams. Any reputable, legitimate business will identify themselves, and not use a computer to get in touch with me concerning "important personal business".

These people are calling the wrong phone number, they are asking for someone who does not live here.  They call daily.  This is a debt collector.  I've had this phone number for 20 years, so I doubt it has anything to do with the previous owner of my number.

These folks are a Collection Agency.  They were calling daily even though I told them they had the wrong number.  They're calling for someone with the same initials and last name as me.

As a corporation, these folks must have a Registered Agent on file in your state to receive legal documents (i.e. certified mail, court filings, etc...).  A Registered Agent is who you send a Cease & Desist letter demanding that they stop contacting you.  To look up your state's Registered Agent for Penn Credit Corporation go to http://www.usa-registeredagent.com/secretarty-of-state-resource.htm.

Or . . . I started calling them 3-4 times a day to say Hi and to see how the weather is.  I then tell them I wanted to once again verify my phone number with them because they are calling the wrong number.  After a few days, they put me on their do not call list and stopped calling.

I used to work for this company, and I assure you that they are not a scam and do not "buy" old debts. If you are a minor and recieving calls, its because either you signed up for some direct marketing merchandise (BMG Music, Columbia House, Book clubs) and didn't pay for it, or its for a medical bill that the hospital didn't put into parents names.  If they are calling a wrong number, just get in touch with them and let them know, it is THE LAW that they remove it.  If they seen like they don't speak english, its because most of their employees are from the ghetto and don't speak proper english.  If you do have business with them and don't want them to call you, per the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, write them a letter to Cease Communication and mail to: P.O. Box 988, Harrisburg, PA 17108.  I know how annoying these calls can be, and I'm ashamed that I ever worked there.  As for the people that would call back repeatedly and ask about the weather?  I thought that was hilarious and made my day better.

I got a call today from this debt company also. I got the automated voice with my first and last name. I pushed 1 and it was some person trying to collect a debt for Rodale Books. And I was thinking when did I do this and it was about a year ago when I signed up for a free book and I never sent it back so they charged me for the book. Thats why they called. That sucks because I was waiting for a phone call from AT&T to help me with my DSL and they called. My dumb ass shouldn't have signed up for it on the internet. Don't sign up for stuff on the internet people or these people will call.

    Sent To Penn Credit Corporation:

My name is xxx at xxx. You have called my home repeatedly with automated messages. Your messages, that often are left on my answering machine, claim that you are a collection agency. You do not identify whom you represent, and through your automated methods, are circumventing my opportunity to warn you about the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Since you have been harassing me for months, using circumvention, I am warning you now. You are not to call my home for ANY reason. If you do, I will alert your State Attorney General of your tactics.  S/he will receive a link to this website, https://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-900-1380#pdJBhBsywLgDXogjLKhxjSQ that attests to your tactics as described by multiple victims.  I speak for them as well as myself.

You have the right to contact unknowledgeable consumers if lawful; however, I am not one of those unknowledgeable consumers. You are on notice, as of the reception of this message, that further telephonic contact will be reported to your SAG. S/he will receive my written complaint, a copy of this notice and a link to the aforementioned website as evidence.

Cease and desist or further action will be taken.
