Got a call from Revenue Canaday on Thursday, May, 1, 2008 at work, saying to call this number: 1-800-959-2250. I thought it was weird that they call me at work and not home. I call this number on Friday, May, 2, 2008, and the person asked me for my SIN, home address, phone number, date of birth, and name. I did give this, and after they were done, I asked why did I need to call. They told me that everything look fine, and that there was actually no need for me to call. Matter of fact, they don't have my work number.
After this call, I began to fear that this was a possible fraud. I did a little online research to find out, found this site, and found out that I could use the 1-800-O-Canada phone number. After going to the official Canaidan Government website to verify the 1-800-O-Canada phone number, I called it, and the person told me that the 1-800-959-2250 is indeed a legit Revenue Canada phone number.
I've just sended an e-mail to the Government Of Canada just to be on the safe side(In the Canadian Government website, under Contact Us, they give options of phone, e-mail, fax, and I think mail), just to cover my bets. It's possible that Revenue Canada were actually looking for another person with my same name, because before I started to work at the place I'm working, there was a person with my same name, and they had a manager like position. The person left sometime before I started to work there, and once and a while, I've been told to answer phone calls that are meant for this person, because they callers only give out the 1st name, and not the last(Either that, or the person who tells me to answer the phone call don't know my last name).
But regardless, I sended an e-mail just as a 2nd verification. For those who want to go to the Government Of Canada website, here's the link:
Choose English or French, then go to Contact Us, and then choose your method of contact(Phone is probably the best) so that you can find out if any phone numbers from the Government are real or fake.
re. greg, Greg - 10 Jul 2008 "its the Revenue Canada Collection Call Center line, 1800OCANADA verified the #, pay your taxes on time and they won't be calling you."
My wife recieved a call from some man claiming to be from canada revenue. first he confirmed date of birth, then street address, and then SIN. Of course none of the info was giving but could have very easily. Feeling un-easy about disclosing these facts over the phone the revenue canada agent gave the 1-800-959-2250 number to call to discuss income tax history.
I recieved the same call. I knew it was a scam for two reasons. The first is that i don't provide Revenue Canada with my phone number on the returns so all correspondance is in writing and sent to my accountant. The second red flag is that when i asked for their name and extension number and i would call them back immediately after i checked out the number-they would not provide it. That is the beauty of this scam even if you suspect it you get lost in the burocracy of Revenue Canada trying to find out if they called you. I received a call from an individual, two days in a row, stating that they are with the Canada Revenue Agency. They left a message with me for my husband to call them, and said that he would require his S.I.N. when he calls. I passed on the information to my husband but got a little suspicious when they said their office was open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. – I don’t know of any government agency that keeps these type of hours. Caller I.D. shows GOC-GDC 1-800-931-1026, and they asked my husband to call back at 1-800-959-2250 – when I put the 2250 number into Canada 411 to do a reverse look-up that's when I discoverd this website. Thank you for sharing.
