Capital One. They do not keep their records straight. I do not owe anything, have made payments, have told them to check their records and stop calling but THEY DO NOT PAY ATTENTION OR DO THEIR JOBS.

This number claims to be from Capital One.  I have never done ANY business with Capital One (and surely won't now).  Most of the time they call during the day when I am at work and cannot answer (shucks) and they dont leave a message.  I called them back and told them that they need to take me off of their calling list for whatever they put me on there for.  No luck so far.  Half of the time they hung up on me.  It may be a collections thing because they asked for a specific name once in one of the calls.  Either way, they call approx 4-6 times a day on various different numbers.  They include:
    877-218-3219
    800-955-6600
    813-202-7244
    800-955-7070
    866-381-0453
I'm sure the list will grow.  I have filled a complaint with the FTC, but that was in the beginning so I may try to update it now.

This is NOT Capital One.  They are saying they are Capital One when you have an old debt thru Capital One.  It's a collection agency & their practices are unethical.  This # is calling me to collect on a debt that is about 10 yrs old.  It is not on my credit report anymore and Capital One has recently approved me for a new CC thru them so they have obviously forgiven this debt.  There is no reason for me to pay it now other than just to give these jerks money.  They aren't the original creditor.  Just ignore them and they will stop eventually.  If they don't, ask for their address and send them a letter to cease and desist ALL phone calls.  Legally, they have to stop then.

"Capital One" is call me when I don't even have a credit card, let alone old enough to get one. I have never answer the phone calls. The recording says her name is Linda and would like me to call them back due to some report about Capital One and to call back at 1-866-953-7906. I have never called back. What do I do about it?

Call the number back. A recorded voice says it's Capital One and prompts you to enter your 16-digit card number. DO NOT DO IT! They're just fishing for your credit card number!

This number, 202-813-0586, sent me a text claiming I won $1,000 at Walmart.  These companies that call or send text msgs should be listed on a domain so people can either contact them for business, be removed from their list, or report them for penalties.  Sadly, our elected officials promote this type of interactions.

If I were you I would cancel the new card.    Often they bury in the agreement that by applying for the new card you agree to put the old balance on the new card, or at least that you do still owe them the balance on the new card - i.e., they're attempting to breathe new life into the time-barred debt.

By the way, in NY please see Capital One vs McGurk - - - SOL is the LOWER of NY State (6 years) or the home state of the creditor.    If the creditor is HQ'd in Delaware that's 3 years.

I hate this whole industry.   There is no excuse for it.   Typically the reason a "debt" has gone that long without them suing you is that the claim itself is partially or completely BS.   There are lawyers who take such cases on a contingency basis and with Lexis-Nexis they can find you anywhere in the US if they want to - it costs them nothing out of pocket to get a judgment, and you can't skip.  I used to run a commercial loan workout dept at a bank, I know this.   But what I also know is that there is no excuse for the shoddy recordkeeping, for the common practice of selling "accounts" when the reality is that the account holder didn't pay only because he didn't actually owe anything, or because something was charged to the account months after the account holder closed the account, thus never got a bill and never knew anything about it.   Commercial loans are not managed this way.   Consumer loans are.   It's ridiculous - - I've closed accounts with zero balance, never heard anything from the original creditor, and then received calls 5-6 years later from a collection agency - - basically the original creditor's records were faulty and instead of fixing that they "sold" the "debt" to a collector for pennies on the dollar - for the collectors that's part of the risk they assume, along with people who won't or can't pay legitimate debts.  I've also received calls looking for people with the same name but different birthdate, spelling, addresses - they figure if 1 in 100 people are timid or old and pay someone else's questionable debt just to make the calls stop, that's worth it.

Block all these calls, never answer them, it's all a scam.
