they just called my cell phone number, didn't leave a voicemail and hung up after the first ring.  Caller ID on cell says unknown.  I have no idea who it could be from and have never heard of this company before.

it is from HSBC or Household or Beneficial, All the same after mant take-overs. It is collections they can make 1 contact a day between 8am and 9 pm in the customers time zone. now a call is not a contact. so if a person does not answer or answer in time they hang up and try again. Remember answering machines do not pay, so they try till they get a person. All legal.

It's the law and most follow it. Remember 1 contact "talk to you a day" Except MA a message is a contact 2 times a week.

I started getting calls in 2013 from these scum bags from when I had my identity stolen back in 2001 . They can suck a big one there not getting a dime go after the scum that ruined my credit . Heads up to those that have a smart phone (and who doesn't) if you have a droid there are some great free apps out there you can down load and program so when certain numbers call u they get 1 ring and a hang up which is what they deserve.

answered call although usu do not get calls to cell phone. the number is not given out. when it picked up there was a lot of background noise like voices in a call center or a restaurant but nothing distinctive and no particular words or sounds. i said, 'hello?' and no one answered. said, 'hello" again and call disconnected.
