If you are American, you may be among those who did NOT know that a call with no country code in front of it could be from anywhere outside the U.S./Canada. A call from the 849 area code is from the Dominican Republic, and you should be wary (don't answer it) unless you specifically know the number. I'm getting a lot of calls these days from numbers I don't know, and virtually all of them have turned out to have complaints about those specific phone numbers when I looked them up on the Internet.

To make matters worse, there are rumors circulating by email about 849 and other area codes that contain a lot of false or exaggerated information. It is still best to ignore calls from 849 (and especially not to respond to a request to call an 849 number) unless you specifically know the number, but the situation is not as extreme as the one described in the emails reported on by Snopes and other sites dealing with scams. It appears this is the same "SCAM" different number making the call.

Keep getting calls from 8499634873 about medicare issues.  Looks like a scam and it sure is frustrating to keep getting the calls.  Be Careful.

Why can't I block this number??? When I list the number on the block list it said that it's invalid. I told them yesterday that I was not interested in anything they wanted to speak on and again they call back to back. I tried to block the number, but could not because it's invalid.  Somebody help me!!

The best way to deal with this is NOT to answer, and NOT to call back, or do anything else like that.  These are likely robo calls, made by a computer, and every connection it does make tells it it's reached a valid working phone number, and it will then keep trying to reach you.  The best thing to do is DO NOT ANSWER, at all, not even with an answering machine.  This will not completely solve the problem, but my experience suggests that it does reduce the number of such calls that come in.

If caller ID says anything like Name Not Found, or Unknown Caller, or Toll Free Call, or Wireless Caller, just do not answer.  "Wireless Caller" CAN mean someone you know, and might want to hear from, but if you don't recognize the actual numbers in the wireless phone number calling, don't answer.  (This gives you an incentive to learn your friends' wireless numbers, just in case.)

This number was on my answering machine with the ID "Name Unavailable"...didn't leave a message.  I don't pick up unless I know the caller.

Received call from this number.  Did not answer.  Call is from Dominican Republic.

3/21/2013  11am - Unknown Name - No msg.  This is the second call this week and the third call in a month.

NEVER answer unknown or ask to be removed from their list.  They have no desire to remove your name or number and when you answer you have validated that their robo dialing has connected to a working phone number.

NEVER give out personal information, medicare details, credit card, bank info or anything of a personal nature.  

If they are a legitimate company they will identify themselve and leave a valid working phone number.

849-963-4873 called today and was blocked by our Digitone call blocker. (We block every area code 9##, 8##, 7##... 0##.) Obviously we didn't answer it. A friend or associate who wants to talk to us would call back, so this works great. To their credit they called at 9:45 in the morning; we've been getting a few a week at 11:00 PM... not always with a number to report. The call blocker blocks them also. About the only ones that are blocked and shouldn't be are people who, for some unknown reason, block their own phone number.

This number called when I wasnt at home so answering machine probably came on, but no messge

I don't why getting calls from them I would like them to stop calling
