person named Eric Cook called to update our merchant account and asked me to run a credit card for verification.

Eric Cook is one of our Merchant Development Managers. He was updating the merchant profile for the business due to a lack of transaction activity on the account. The test transaction is part of that update.

We got a call from 407-777-4598. (Read on -- this is still relevant to 855-892-0473.) The person identified himself as Andrew Farkas. He said he was from Discover Card and that they wanted to update our business listing. He also said that they wanted to do a test transaction. It sounded fishy. Our company does not directly take Discover Card; we do it through a third party. I told him that I was not comfortable giving out any financial information, nor would I participate in his test transaction. We ended that call. He called back the next day. I told him that I found it troubling that his number on our phone ID came up as "unknown." He said that it must be because of the calling system they used. I told him that I would not be giving him any information. We ended that call. I then called Discover Card using the 800 number on Discover's website. I told the account representative that I reached about the call with "Andrew Farkas." The account representative looked up the 407 number, plus the 855-892-0473 number that Andrew gave me to help me "verify" his call. The rep said that neither phone number was in Discover's system. He also thought it sounded fishy, especially because we do not take Discover directly, so why would Discover be calling us to update a business listing in the first place?
