    (862) 233-9551 Robo call received 10 February 2014 ("Save money on your gas utility bill...")  SCAM
    Caller ID: "Newark NJ"

    Called recently from: (862) 233-9521

These people call whether you're on the Do Not Call list or not. Doesn't that suggest something about their business ethics?

I'm sure they're identity thieves and credit card scammers.

If all robo calls were as short as this one, it wouldn't be so bad. The recording said "This is a followup to information you received by mail about saving money on your gas bill. Press zero to speak with a representative.", and that was it, no mention of being removed from their calling list (that "removal" never works, anyway").

I never respond with key presses, I always wait and let them disconnect the call so they think they've reached an automated device, not a live person who follows their instructions.

I try to record these robo calls using Google Voice ( www.google.com/voice ) but this call didn't come to my Google number. You can hear the recording of similar scam calls on my Google Voice Spam Calls web page:

I'm on the DoNotCall list but continue to receive calls from this number. Would like to report to FCC. Newark, NJ is what shows up on the caller ID.

Robo call received 12 February 2014 ("This call is pertaining to the notice you recently received in your current [unintelligible] bill about a rate reduction...")  SCAM
    Caller ID: [unobserved]

    Called recently from: (862) 233-9521

These people call whether you're on the Do Not Call list or not. Doesn't that suggest something about their business ethics?

This is a poorly executed robo call about saving money on your utility bill. The voice-over suggests you already received written material about this "offer" in your last utility bill, then they do a poor editing job to remove the name of whatever utility name was recorded in their original message.

I never respond with key presses, I always wait and let them disconnect the call so they think they've reached an automated device, not a live person who follows their instructions.

Here is a transcript of this call:

[me] Hello? [they] "This call is pertaining to the notice you recently received in your current [unintelligible] bill about a rate reduction. To receive the discount on your bill, please press zero to speak to a representative. Press zero to connect...[long pause]"
